  • August 26 1946 Dear Granny, Your letter was a most welcomed sight this morning. You see, I worked for 12 hours last night and this morning I hit the hay as soon as I got off duty. When I woke up I found your letter along with two from home. The family news certainly does sound good in all respects. Marnie and Laura are to be congratulated on their schol- astic abilities, Betsy on her artistic ingenuity, and David on getting out of the Navy and into a job. Hod has been doing pretty well also. He is clearing around $100 & $120 per month. He has earned a promotion in addition to all of that. School starts for him next week. It seems hard to believe that my kid brother will be a Jr. You know Granny, I hope more than anything else that Hod won’t have to serve time in the Army. It just isn’t the place for a fella like him to waste one and a half years. That is all that it is has been for me. I have lost some time and I am pretty rusty now. It is going to be quite a change from an Army life to one crowded with books lectures and more books. As for breaks I consider myself extremely lucky. I have had quite a bit of time at home and the out- fit I am in is the best possible over here. On top of that I still have become dull and rusted on many things. Perhaps the best part of my overseas time is that I have learned that the world isn’t one mass of roses and the people in it can be very crude and selfish. That can be true of Americans too. I hope that I never have the chance to see men carry on as they do in the Army away
