Rowena Bradley

Cherokee craftworker Rowena Bradley is shown in this photograph surrounded by baskets that she made. In her lap are strips of rivercane, the material that she used to construct the baskets. To the left is a very large single weave basket; the other lidded baskets are made in the double weave technique. The photograph was made in 2003, the last year of her life. Rowena Bradley (1922-2003) was the third generation of known basket makers in her family. Both her grandmother, Mary Dobson (b. circa 1857) and her mother, Nancy George Bradley (1881-1963) were accomplished basket weavers. Basket making was a family tradition; her father, Henry Bradley gathered rivercane and dug roots for dye materials.
