  • This handwritten letter of resignation from Robert L. Madison (1867-1954) to Walter Moore, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, conveys Madison's decision to resign on grounds of health. Madison, considered as the founder of Western Carolina University, served as the first president of Cullowhee High School, later Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, from 1889-1912 and from 1920-1923.
  • May 1924. Hon. Walter E. Moore, Chairman of Bd. of Trustees, Cullowhee N. & I. School. My dear Sir: After about a quarter-century's service to this institution rendering it at all times the best and utmost of which I have been capable, I hereby offer my resignation to take effect Sept. 1, 1924. In one capacity or another, as student, teacher, business manager, and treasurer, I have been, with little intermission, connected with the school since its inception thirty-five years ago. My work through the best years of my manhood, has been largely a labor of love, given without stint or thought of self-serving; for my zeal, my jealous care, and my unflagging interest in promoting the welfare of this institution have been inspired by my love for my Alma Mater.
