Reasons in Favor of the Establishment of a National Park

  • while it is not generally understood to be so, Mackinac Island, Michigan, is also a National Park. JUL Second. The South has no Park conducted on the same principles and aims, and we therefore believe that with the following advantages shown, we are entitled to a National Park in the South. JUL Third. Western North Carolina presents a country having all the natural prerequisites for a" Great National Park. The region is already well known for its scenery, climate and forests, and is annually attracting thousands of visitors, even from great distances. JUL Fourth. Lumbermen are now securing options and control of immense tracts of primeval forests. The mountains are being denuded rapidly of forest growth and before long unless some provision is made, and that S;>on for the preservation of the forests, they will be destroyed. JUL Sixth. No better waters for trout could be found than are included in this region. Many of our streams are still well stocked, but the mountain trout are rapidly being destroyed, due largely to lumber operations. JUL Seventh. WTe have abundance of primeval forests, whose hundreds of thousands of acres can be secured at very low prices. JA Eighth.
