Penland Weavers and Potters product photographs of woven items
Item
Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).
-
These 12 black and white photographs are of items woven and sold by the Penland Weavers and Potters during the 1940s and 1950s. The images depict hand-woven scarves, placemats (including some woven with sedge grass), napkins, runners, mats, aprons and one handbag. It is likely these photographs were used as promotional material sent to potential buyers, such as Elizabeth Lord of Watauga Handicrafts in Boone, N.C., as evidenced by the envelope dated April 30, 1954 in which the photographs were found. The original envelope was discarded because of preservation concerns, but a photocopy was retained and scanned as part of this group. The Penland Weavers and Potters (originally called the Fireside Industries) were established in 1923 as a department of the Appalachian School. In 1938, Penland School of Handicrafts (now Penland School of Crafts) was incorporated and the Penland Weavers and Potters became associated with the new craft school.
