Penland Campus Map Placemat, 1948

  • This campus map of Penland School of Handicrafts (now Penland School of Crafts) is one of a number of maps that have been printed over the years. They have served to promote the school, orient visitors, students and instructors, and to entertain the reader. With the passage of time they have become valuable documents that help to date the placement and construction of buildings, the changing topography of the land; as well as providing cultural information about the greater Penland community. This particular map was printed for use as a placemat in the Pines dining hall. Students and instructors were encouraged to use the placemat as stationery by folding it in half, writing on one of the blank halves, folding again and seal, stamp and add an address. The signature "Sally Drew This" in the lower left hand corner refers to Sally Kesler, who lived for a while at Penland and taught silk-screening.
