Item
  • DECISIONS OF THE UNITED STATES GEOGRAPHIC BOARD Sugar Loaf: peak, approx. altitude 6,400 feet, Plumas County, Calif., in sec. 17, T. 23 N., R. 15 E., Mount Diablo meridian, Plumas National Forest—one of the old names in this region. Sugarland: high ridge (Sugarland Mountain) about 10 miles long, Sevier County, Tenn., coming from the northwest and joining the main divide of the Great Smoky Mountains, near Mount Collins, near lat. 35° 38' 30" N., long. 83° 31' 30" W. This ridge forms the divide between the Little Pigeon River and the Little River. So called locally because of the many groves of sugar maples or " sugar trees" found on or near this feature. Summit: peak, altitude 13,272 feet, Archuleta County, Colo., in sec. 26, T. 36 N, R. 2 E., on border of San Juan and Rio Grande national forests. Sunvnut: see Ina Coolbrith, mountain Calif. Tamarack: ridge, Clearwater County, Idaho, in northwestern part of T. 37 N., R. 7 E., Boise meridian, Clearwater National Forest. Tamarack: see Larch, butte, Idaho. Teddy: creek, Beaverhead County, Mont., in sees. 10, 15, 16, 20, and 21, T. 1 N., R. 12 W., Montana meridian, empties into Big Hole River, Beaverhead National Forest. (Not Tile.) Name changed because of duplication. Temple: mountain, Boundary County, Idaho, in sec. 9, T. 62 N., R. 3 W., Boise meridian, Kaniksu National Forest. This mountain looks like a huge temple on one side due to sheer bluffs and a pyramid peak on top. Tile: see Teddy, creek, Mont. Titan: gulch, Beaverhead County, Mont., in sees. 1, 11, 12, and 14, T. 1 S., R. 11 W., Montana meridian, Beaverhead National Forest. (Not Spring.) The existence in the same vicinity of several features by the name Spring has made this change necessary. Tricorner Knob: peak, altitude about 6,400 feet, Haywood and Swain counties, N. C, Sevier and Cocke counties, Tenn., at the junction of Balsam Mountain and the main divide of the Great Smoky Mountains, near lat. 35° 42' N., long. 83° 15' 20" W., about half mile south of Mount Guyot. So called by Arnold Guyot, prior to 1860, because it was formerly at the corner of three counties. Trio: mountain, Powell County, Mont., located in sec. 32, T. 20 N., E. 14 W., Montana meridian, Flathead National Forest. Name given because mountain is accessible from three directions and selected for fire- /patrol base on that account. ■/Unaka: mountains, Unicoi and Carter counties, Tenn., and Avery and Mitchell counties, N. C, forming the common boundary line of North Carolina and Tennessee between the Nolichucky Biver, near lat. 36° 04' 20" N, long. 82° 24' 30" W., and the Doe River near lat. 36° 06' N., long. 82° 07' 30" W. Of 40 miscellaneous maps, dating from 1795- 1930, 22 maps call this ridge, in whole or in part, Iron Mountains; others divide between Iron and Yellow, and 5 call them Unaka the entire distance. The southern boundary of the Unaka National Forest coincides with the summit of this ridge. Uyiaka: see Unicoi. *Unicoi: mountains, Monroe and Polk counties, Tenn., and Cherokee and Graham counties, N. C, forming in part the common boundary line of North Carolina and Tennessee between the Little Tennessee River near Jat. 35° 27' 45" N., long. 83° 57' W., and lat. 35° 13' 30" N, long. 84° 17' 30" AV, thence southwest in Polk County, Tenn., to the Hi- wassee River. One of the names in common use suggested by Horace
Object
  • Like many rural areas, names of places within the Great Smoky Mountains were sometimes redundant or known by different names in different localities. In the 1930s, the National Park Service appointed a Nomenclature Committee from North Carolina and one from Tennessee to make recommendations to U.S. Geographic Board which decided upon “official” names for peaks, creeks, and roads. Photographer and park advocate, George Masa served on the North Carolina committee. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
