DECISIONS OF THE UNITED STATES GEOGRAPHIC BOARD Prof. S. B. Buckley, prior to 1859, in honor of the celebrated geographer, Arnold Guyot, who made the first comprehensive survey of this region and who did much to stimulate public interest in these mountains. Harris: lake, Archuleta County, Colo., the northern of two small lakes at head of Big Branch, in sec. 26, T. 34 N., R. 1 E., New Mexico meridian. Believed to be named for a Mr. Harris who originally did some work on this outlet. Ina Coolbrith: mountain (Mount Ina Coolbrith), altitude 8,302 feet, Lassen, Plumas, and Sierra counties, Calif., in Tahoe National Forest, near lat. 39° 41' 45" N., long. 120° 08' 30" W. (Not Summit.) Named by the California State Geographic Board for Ina Donna Coolbrith, former poet laureate of California, who arrived in California at the age of 11 with a party guided by Jim Beckwith, for whom the adjacent pass, 6 miles north, was named. Indian: gap, Great Smoky Mountains, on border between Swain County, N. C, and Sevier County, Tenn., near lat. 35° 36' 30" N., long. 83° 27' 15" W. A prehistoric Indian trail crossed the mountains through this gap, which has been variously called Grassy, Lufty, Road, and Wares. Iron: mountains, Carter and Johnson counties, Tenn., and Washington, Wythe, Graham, and Smyth counties, Va., extending northeast from the Doe River, near lat. 36° 17' 30" N., long. 82° 10' 30" W., to approx. lat. 36° 35' 30" N., long. 81° 00' W. Many old maps and some recent ones show the name Iron has been applied not only to different sections of the Great Smoky divide but also to much of the ridge between the Hiwassee River and the Stone Mountains, forming North Carolina-Tennessee boundary north of the Watauga River. But many of these maps, especially those of recent years, show the Iron Mountains ridge as described above-—a well-defined watershed about 80 miles long, of which about 31% miles are in North Carolina and 48% miles in Virginia. This ridge is crossed by two streams only, the Watauga River in North Carolina and Laurel Creek in Virginia, the latter at a point about 1 mile north of the North Carolina-Virginia boundary. The ridge in part is the common boundary between Smyth and Graham counties and Graham and Wythe counties, Va. Iron: see Unaka, mountains, N. C. and Tenn. Jumpoff, The: cliffs, altitude about 6,000 feet, Great Smoky Mountains, border of Sevier County, Tenn., and Swain County, N. C, located on the northern end of Mount Kephart, near lat. 35° 38' N„ long. 83° 23' 30" W., a name long used locally. Kent: small creek, Boundary County, Idaho, located mostly in the north half of T. 62 N., R. 3 W., Boise meridian, draining to the north between Temple Mountain and Kent Peak, Kaniksu National Forest. Kent: peak, approx. altitude 7,000 feet, Boundary County, Idaho, in sec. 11, T. 62 N., R. 3 W., Boise meridian, Kaniksu National Forest. Named for an old trapper, who was once lost in these parts. Klutter: mountain, a ridge 4 miles long and 8,700 feet in altitude, Archuleta County, Colo., T. 33 N., R. 1 W., New Mexico meridian, near lat, 37° 06' N., long. 106° 57' W., San Juan National Forest. Local name given for one of the first settlers in the region. La Valle: creek, Missoula County, Mont., with a narrow drainage basin, flowing from approx. sec. 22, T. 15 N., R. 19 W.j Montana meri- • dian, southwesterly to the plain of Clark Fork, in T. 14 N., R. 20 W. (Not Ravalli nor Valley.) The approved name is suported by local usage.

Like many rural areas, names of places within the Great Smoky Mountains were sometimes redundant or known by different names in different localities. In the 1930s, the National Park Service appointed a Nomenclature Committee from North Carolina and one from Tennessee to make recommendations to U.S. Geographic Board which decided upon “official” names for peaks, creeks, and roads. Photographer and park advocate, George Masa served on the North Carolina committee. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
