DECISIONS OF THE UNITED STATES GEOGRAPHIC BOARD 1795-1930, the section of these mountains between Pigeon River and the French Broad River bears no name; and the names on 15 maps vary between Iron, Great Iron, Smoky, and Great Smoky. There is also some recent usage of Max Patch but that name has not become established. Balsam: mountain, forming border of Swain County and Haywood County, N. C, an extended ridge centering near lat. 35° 39' N., long. 83° 12' W., common county boundary 14 miles'. Tricorner Knob is at its junction with main divide of Great Smoky Mountains. This is one of the oldest names in this region. Beaver: see Crozier, creek, Mont. Big Branch: creek (Big Branch), Archuleta County, Colo., in T. 34 N., R. 1 E., N. Mex. meridian, minor tributary to Rio Blanco, San Juan National Forest. Blue Jay: see Blue Joe, creek. Blue Joe: creek, Boundary County, Idaho, and Kootenay District, British Columbia, rises in sec. 6, T. 64 N., R. 4 W., Boise meridian, tributary from the southwest to Boundary Creek into which it empties, just north of the Canadian line, in approximate long. 116° 49'. This name is shown on the map of the International Boundary Commis- I sion, 1908. (Not Blue Jay.) .Brushy: peak (Brushy Mount), altitude 4, 911 feet, Sevier County, Tenn., in Great Smoky Mountains, near lat. 35° 40' 40" N., long. 83° 26' W. Buckles: lake, Archuleta County, Colo., southern of two small lakes at head of Big Branch, in sec. 35, T. 34 N., R. 1 E., New Mexico meridian. Named locally for the builder of the \ dam across the outlet. Buckley: peak (Mount Buckley), altitude 6,500 feet, the southern of the three knobs, the central one of which is known as Clingmans Dome and the northern as Mount Love, Great Smoky Mountains, on the border of Sevier County, Tenn., and Swain County, N. C, near lat. 35° 33' 15" N., long. 83° 30' W. Named by Prof. A. Guyot, prior to 1860;, in honor of S. B. Buckley, naturalist, friend, and some time colaborer. Bugle: creek, Bonner County, Idaho, rises in sec. 24, T. 64 N., R. 4 W., Boise meridian, and flows into Caribou Creek in sec. 23, T. 63 N., R, 4 W., Kaniksu National Forest. (Not West Fork, Caribou.) Bugle: ridge, Bonner County, Idaho, principally in Ts. 63 and 64 N., R. 3 W., Boise meridian, forming divide between Caribou and Bugle creeks, Kaniksu National Forest. So named because Bugle Creek borders it on west side. Caribou: creek, Boundary and Bonner counties, Idaho, rises in sec. 31, T. 64 N., R. 3 W., Boise meridian, and flows southwest into that part of the Priest River, which is known locally as The Thorofare, in T. 62 N., R. 4 W. Includes what is shown on some maps as East Fork, Caribou. Caribou: see Abandon, creek, Idaho. Cedar: see Fan, mountain, Mont. Chalk: mountains, Archuleta County, Colo., a ridge about 6 miles long and 12,000 feet altitude forming divide between headwaters of Eio Blanco and Navajo River, near lat. 37° 09' N.-, long. 106° 45' W.., running northeast from Navajo Peak. Local name, which has reference to their chalky formation and also to the fact that the flood waters from these mountains are almost white. Clingmans Dome: mountain, altitude 6,642 feet, Sevier County, Tenn., and Swain County, N. C, on Great Smoky Mountains divide and- common state boundary line, near lat. 35° 34' 30" N., long. 83° 30' W. Restatement of earlier description. Clingmans Dome together with Mount Buckley and Mount Love, were named by Prof. Arnold Guyot about 1860, for Buckley and Love, who were with Clingman when the mountain was first measured in 1858. Like many rural areas, names of places within the Great Smoky Mountains were sometimes redundant or known by different names in different localities. In the 1930s, the National Park Service appointed a Nomenclature Committee from North Carolina and one from Tennessee to make recommendations to U.S. Geographic Board which decided upon “official” names for peaks, creeks, and roads. Photographer and park advocate, George Masa served on the North Carolina committee. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
