  • Ninian and Polly Ann Edmonston to sons B.B. and B.F. Pigeon Valley August 5th 64 My Dear sons I have set down with rather a heavy heart from the news I have just heard from Petersburg that grant [Grant] had under mined our works at that place & killed one hundred of our men and took two lines of our works the [tho ?] our men Rallied & Retook them & 2 lines of grants [Grant’s] works in that onsla___ [onslaught ?] my fears is that one or Both of my Dear boys may now be in Eternity my prayer to god is that I may be mistaken for which I shall Continue pray until I hear from you I Recd your most welcome letter on the second inst dated 24 & 25 of July you never can tell I ____ Rejoiced until you have children situated as you are Exposed to dan ger [danger] & death continually may the god spirit of Lord keep you both under the shadow of his wings until the danger over past Dr. Allin was at town at the comparing of the votes cast yesterday for the for Vance 373 [378 ?] Holden 103 for com Love 295 for Estes 125 for Furman 26 for Senate Bryson 240 D R Siler 128 Bill Hen Ry [Henry ?] 108 for sheriff for witch [wilch ?, Welch ?] 20 for ga Son 175 Shelton 21 Green 67 See [Lee ?] 137 so you see how the vote stom.d [stand ?] in the county I see so fare as heard from the ar my [army] has given Vance overwhelming triumphant to had majority will Holden know which of the Holdens he is I will stop & finish in the morning Aug 6th this morning we are in good health. Allen & Laura came over last Evening they are well Dorothy & her Little children are well the tory band are creeping about in the mountains our men is searching and scouting taking some of the Tories up I heard this H I Franklin has got back home Andrew Crawford is in the mountains again a tory band went to old Benjamin Queens [Divers?] one night this week & rob.d him of ev ery [every] thing they wanted money & all his horses & mules John Reece & Dan Revis has got back of all the set in the world there is none of less to open depen dance than Reeces set I hope that if they ever get H I F again they will fix him a way that he will be no more trouble. I have nothing new worth writing or I would write it you complain that we don’t write often enough it is a [derangement ?] in the male you said in your last that July the eleventh was the last letter you had got from home since that time this is the 4 letter I have wrote I want to hear from you often as you can possibly write if it is no more than to say you are a live & well I must close the mail goes down this morning this eve ning [evening] I hope to hear from you again post farewell my dear boys May the Lord shield you while you are in so much danger I hope to hear from you soon your affectionate father and mother N E & PA Edmonston B B & B F Edmonston Envelope August 5, 1864 letter Forks of Pigeon, N.C. Aug [torn] Attn B.F. Edmonston [torn] 25 Regmt. NCT Petersburg V.A. ---------------- Ulysses S. Grant [something about how much he rejoiced?] W.C. Allen, The Annals of Haywood County, North Carolina (1935, p. 75), Members of the General Assembly from Haywood County, in 1864 it was in the House S.L. Love. W.C. Allen, The Annals of Haywood County, North Carolina (1935, p. 75), “Members of the General Assembly from Haywood County,” in 1864 in the Senate it was S.C. Bryson. Henry J. Franklin, Private, Company F, 25th Regiment, “Resided in Haywood County where he enlisted at age 32, June 29, 1861. Present or accounted for until he deserted on or about September 23, 1862. Returned to duty in March - June, 1863. Present or accounted for through February, 1864. No further records.” A Henry Franklin, age 31, is on the 1860 census for Haywood County, Forks of Pigeon post office. This letter is from August 1864, so this cannot be about Andrew J. Crawford, Private, Company B, 25th Regiment, “Resided in Jackson County where he enlisted at age 22, May 30, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant but was reduced in ranks on April 30, 1862. Present or accounted for until killed at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862.” An Andrew Crawford is on the 1860 census for Haywood County, Forks of Pigeon post office, age 24, married and with a one year old son. John V. Reece, Musician, Company F, 25th Regiment, “Resided in Haywood County where he enlisted at age 17, July 13, 1861. Mustered in as Musician. Present or accounted for until discharged on or about September 14, 1861, by reason of ‘disability caused by an old cut on his foot.’ Later served as Corporal in Company I, 62nd Regiment N.C. Troops.” There is a John Reece in the household of Daniel Reece, Sr., who was 16 in 1860, in Haywood County, Forks of Pigeon post office. Daniel Webster Revis, Private, Company B, 64th Regiment, “Born in Henderson County on November 25, 1835. He was by occupation a farmer and woodcutter prior to enlisting in Henderson County at age 26, July 12, 1862, for the war. Reported present through August 17, 1863, and he appears to have been present with his company at Asheville on March 3, 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance on August 29, 1865.

They also discuss local results of the North Carolina gubernatorial election of 1864 and describe attacks on the local populace by Union raiders.
