Nina Standing Deer

  • wcu_craft_revival-6168.jpg
  • This undated postcard features a colorized photograph of a Cherokee woman making a basket at the Cherokee Indian Fair. The back of the postcard reads, "Mrs. Nina Standing Deer was a feature of the Cherokee Indian Fair as she wove her baskets before interested groups. Baskets were bought faster than they could be woven, and customers waited eagerly as they watched the finishing touches put on." Such postcards were a common way to promote tourism in the Cherokee area, especially for large events like the Cherokee Indian Fair where Cherokee artisans could display and sell their work while competing in a large number of Arts and Craft categories. The photograph on which this rendering was made was taken by Carlos C. Campbell (1892-1978), and the postcard was produced by the Standard News Agency of Knoxville, Tennessee.
