Nina Standing Deer

  • wcu_craft_revival-6159.jpg
  • This undated postcard reads on the back, "Chief Standing Deer's wife and daughter making baskets in front of their home. The Indian Reservation is located on the Eastern Boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park." Such postcards were a common way to promote tourism in the Cherokee area, especially for large events like the Cherokee Indian Fair where Cherokee artisans could display and sell their work while competing in a large number of Arts and Craft categories. The photograph from which this colorized rendering was taken is credited to Curt Teich & Co., Inc., and the postcard was produced by the Standard News Agency of Knoxville, Tennessee.
