National Forests of the Southern Appalachians -- Pisgah National Forest and Game Preserve

  • The travel brochure entitled 'The National Forests of the Southern Appalachians'� (Washington, D.C.: United States Department of Agriculture, August 1923), featured on page 16 three images under the general heading 'Pisgah National Forest and Game Preserve.'� One picture of a mountain vista is without a caption while the other two are identified as 'Fireplace in Public Camp Ground'� and 'A Spotted Fawn.'� While the Pisgah National Forest covers a large area throughout twelve western North Carolina counties, Mt. Pisgah itself is located on the Haywood County, N.C., and Buncombe County, N.C., line and has been a noted scenic destination in western North Carolina for decades. As noted in the brochure text, in 1914 the United States purchased the mountain and thousands of acres of forest lands that the late George Vanderbilt had assembled as part of his immense Biltmore Estate and established Pisgah National Forest in 1916. The Pink Beds mentioned in the brochure refer to an area in Pisgah National Forest that is renowned for its flowering foliage.
