Educated at Yale, by 1858, Colton lived in Asheville. He served in the Confederate army and, by the 1880s, had moved to east Tennessee. A naturalist and geologist by training, his name is also associated with the publication “Coal: Report of Henry E. Colton, Geologist and Inspector of Mines.” Perhaps because of Colton’s work with mineralogy, his “Mountain Scenery” includes references to the geology of the region.
