Moonshine Still

  • wcu_picturing-103.jp2
  • This 1916 postcard illustrates a moonshine still, typical of those in the mountains. On the reverse, it is hand-dated "10-14-16 at Hot Springs, N.C." The image can be found as part of an article in the June 28, 1919 edition of Collier's magazine. The man in the image is likely Hobson Henderson of Hot Springs. The caption in Collier's reads "A still in operation. Revenue men who raided this illicit whisky-manufacturing plant located it exactly on the State line between Tennessee and North Carolina." Sally Royce Weir lived in Hot Springs and photographed the area.
