Dear Sir:« Referring to your letter of recent date: You are no doubt familiar with the laws of Forth Carolina which prevent us from issuing free transportation within that State. ^ are deeply interested in the success of the Appalachian National Park Association, and to that end will render what assistance lies within our power. It will afford us pleasure to n issue free * wansportat ion to you between points outside of the State of North Carolina when travelling on business connected with said Association. In January 1900, the Appalachian National Park Association submitted a Memorial to Congress and, on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park. The printed Memorial enumerated the reasons to establish a national park in the southeastern U.S. Formed in 1899, the Association was a multi-state effort with representatives from six southern states. Although the organization had major successes early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905.
