We suggest that each Senator and Representa- . . < i tive should be furnished literature now and again just before the winter session meets showing the aims of the Association as well as \vhat has already been accomplished by the organization. th. Association should not forget that in December dff j this year it will be necessary to again send a Co. littee to Washington and that some provision should be made at this time for rais-ing » the necessary funds. As Secretary, I would call your attention to the fact that most of the funds already raised have been raised i$ Asheville. While a few of the neighboring towns have expressed themselves as being greatly interested, with the exception of Charlotte and Waynesville there has been no material assistence rendered. Knoxville especially has mve.r taken this matter up and although the papers of that city contain fresuent articles in favor of the Park.and claims'that Knox- ville will be the natural gate to the same, they have never thus far responded to our appeal for financial assistance. A Committee from the Association should be sent to that city to solicit subscriptions, Unpaid bills are now on hand to the amount of $63.90. Appalachian National Park Association secretary Ambler drafted this memorandum to the president and members of the association. Chase P. Ambler (1865-1932) was a founding member and long-time secretary of the association. He reports that there are currently 163 paid memberships, a mailing list of 914 addresses, and a file of newspaper clippings numbering 960. The memorandum goes on to describe a July 1901 visit to North Carolina headed by Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson (1835-1920) to assess sites for a possible national park and forest reserve.
