These documents pertain to the life and work of Lucy Morgan, weaver, instructor, and founder of the Penland School of Handicrafts (now Penland School of Crafts). Included is the transcript of an interview conducted by Edward Dupuy and Clifford Hotchkiss in 1965; an autobiographical statement written in the 1960s; and a 1965 questionnaire sent to the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild members. Together these documents tell about Morgan's efforts to build the Penland School of Handicrafts out of the Appalachian School, founded by her brother Ralph Morgan. She tells of learning how to weave from a 94-year-old woman in the Penland area and from weaving classes at Berea College in Kentucky. She explains how she brought looms from Berea which were given to area women, so they could learn weaving and earn an income.
