Member file: Louise Pitman, natural dyer, administrator
Item
-
These documents pertain to the life and work of craft administrator and natural dyer, Louise Pitman. Included is a 1957 questionnaire for the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild; a transcript of an interview done with Edward DuPuy and Clifford Hotchkiss in 1965; and a short biography probably written in the 1960s. Louise Pitman was born in New Jersey and educated at Columbia University. She arrived in Appalachia in 1928. After hearing a talk given by Marguerite Butler about the John C. Campbell Folk School, Pitman traveled to the school in order to volunteer and ended up staying for 17 years. At the Folk School she became adept at natural dyeing processes and served as the director of handicrafts and later on the school's Board of Directors. She later served as the first paid Executive Director of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild from 1951 to 1961.
