These documents pertain to the life and work of Herman and Mabel Estes, woodcarvers from Brasstown, North Carolina. Included are the transcript of an interview the Estes did with Edward DuPuy in 1965 and an artist's statement written by Herman Estes during the 1950s. Herman Estes went to school at Berea College where he learned woodworking. He then taught woodworking at a Presbyterian settlement school in Kentucky. For 15 years he was the head of the wood shop at the John C. Campbell Folk School, where he also taught shop and woodworking. His wife, Mabel, assists him with the work he produces. In the interview he describes getting through the Great Depression on his family's farm.
