Map of proposed boundaries of an Appalachian National Park

  • wcu_great_smoky_mtns-12315.jpg
  • This map proposes boundaries for a national park in western North Carolina as suggested by the Appalachian National Park Association. The association, formed in 1899, adopted these boundaries in December 1899. Originally their idea was for the park to extend eastward to sites like Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains and dip southward to include Cherokee and Robbinsville. Originally, the association favored western North Carolina as the sole site for a proposed national park, but soon expanded their vision to include more of the southern Appalachian mountains. This map is included in Senate Report 5512, dated February 1901.
