■I I ' "i> LIBRARY ESGUIATIONS ]L* LIBRARY HOURS* See signs at entrances to building* 2* OPEN STACKS. With the exception of a few rare volumes, all books in the library are on open shelves, ^his enables students to browse among books and become acquainted with many titles which otherwise would be lost to them. Books may be taken from the shelves for use in the Study Carrells, but they should be brought to the Charging Desk and checked to you by a library assistant. If a book is not in its respective place on the shelf, a record of its whereabouts should be at the Charging Desk, just in case someone else should be looking for it* Do not take books from the building without having them properly checked to you by a library assistant** The penalty for doing so is great» .'" 3* RESERVE BOOKS. Faculty members often ask that a certain collection of books be brought from the stacks and shelved behind the Charging Desk for the use of students in certain courses* These books are referred to a-: RESERVE BOOKS. They are checked to students by library assistants for use in the building daring open hours. They may be checked out of the building at hi30 P.M. for use until 7:00 P.M. the same day. They may also be chedksd out at 9"i00 P* M. until 8:00 A.M. the following morning* If Reserxe Books are not returned on time, 100 per hour will be charged until they are returned, h. GENERAL COLLECTION. Books other than RESERVE BOOKS may be checked out of the library for two weeks, and most books can be renewed for another two weeksj however, books must be brought to the library for renewal. A charge of 20 per day is made for any of these books kept over-time* 5* FINES. It is best to pay a library fine when it is incurred* but if it is not convenient to do so, it can be charged to you by a library assistant* A statement is rendered at the end of each quarter to each student who owes fines* 6* OVERDUE NOTICES. These are sent to students after a book is overdue one day. The OVERDUE NOTICES are put in student's post office boxes. Make a habit of checking your post office box several times eachday. If you receive an OVERDUE NOTICE, bring it and the overdue library material to the library and check your record with the library assistant. 7. GRADES WITHHELD. All accounts with the library must be cleared by the end of each quarter, or grades will be withheld and credits will not be reported to Raleigh* In extreme cases, registration may be refused. Reports on delinquent accounts are reported to Miss Beam, the Registrar, and to Mr* Battle, Bursar, at the end of each quarter* 8* LOST BOOKS, ET CETERA. Students are held responsible for books or other library materials which they take from the library. If they are lost or defaced, they must re paid for by the end of the quarter* ., -M

This 42-page scrapbook was put together by Levern Hamlin, a Roanoke, Virginia native who moved to Cullowhee, North Carolina in 1957 to attend Western Carolina College. Levern Hamlin was not only the first African American to attend Western Carolina College but the first African American admitted to a North Carolina state college. As a speech therapist practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hamlin decided to further her training in special education through the college’s graduate division. The scrapbook begins with Hamlin’s account of her arrival at WCC on June 11, 1957 and includes numerous clippings describing the significance of her enrollment. The scrapbook contains entries from her summer semester at WCC extending to July 20th, 1957 when she arrived back at her home in Virginia. Hamlin had previously attained a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Virginia’s Hampton Institute in 1956. Also included are pamphlets and clippings at the end of the scrapbook.
