  • May 20, 1943 The enclosed kodachromes are the nearest I could come to sending to family up to see you. They were taken Easter morning when we came back from church after having Rootin-Tootin christaned [sic]. Its the first time the whole family has been togeather [sic] in over a year. The likenesses are best of Barbara, Buddy, Mary Ann and Ralph. Jane and Frances did not do so well. Frances says I didn’t either but I dont know whether they are flattering or otherwise. I am going to have two or three enlargements made and if you will indicate which one you want I will send it to you. There is a way of making colored prints from these and while not entirely satisfactory they are lots better than black-and-white. Please send the kodachromes back because I have to have them for the enlargements. Buddy has just sent word that he has received orders to report at Detroit June 17 for induction in Naval Air Corps. He will be there 13 weeks then go to Pensacola for final training. Frances is worried about it and I cant say that I liked the idea but perhaps the war will be far enough along by the time he finishes in September that he wont have combat duty. I believe he is to be trained as pilot for air convoy duty. Just now he is Chemical Warfare Officer for the Fifth Naval District at Norfolk. His address is P.O. Box 540, Norfolk, Va. He asked me whether Cornelia might know someone at Detroit who could help them find a place to live there. I told him to write to her. Barbara gave us a thrill last week by being elected President of KD Sorority. Its the first time in the history of the University that one sister followed another as a sorority president. She is only a sophomore (until June 1) but they seemed to think that she was the best qualified girl in the house. She also apparently is slated to take over Buddy’s old job as Business Manager of the OLD LINE, the college magazine. Now all she has to do is make Mortar Board and maybe become president and she will have achieved her oft expressed goal of doing as well as Jane did in college. But she still is just Little Ol’ Squiffy to her daddy and mighty sweet. Last night she came home with her hair in pigtails and looked about twelve. I just cant let her grow up I guess. Frances is down in Atlanta with Jane. She went back with Jane the first of the month and was supposed to stay a month but doubt if she can trust us to take care of things that long. This is being written on the Government’s time-and-a-third overtime so its a somewhat expensive letter. However I dont mind because we put in a total of more than three months overtime without even a thank you until this month. We are now at Beltsville, 12 miles out of Washington on the Baltimore road at the new Plant Industry Station. Its easier to get from Takoma Park than the old offices downtown but its hard as the mischief when we have to see out- of-town visitors, of whom I have a good many. I’ve been pretty busy the last year and a half with war work trying to find chemicals to take the place of those that used to be used by the millions of pounds to destroy weeds on rail- road rights-of way etc. Its meant unending conferences with the War Product Board and manufacturers but its certainly been useful. I’ve also taken on a part-time job with a New York-Lithuanian-Jewish Chemist who wants to grow certain nettles for their chlorophyll content. It brings in a little money
