from time to time and has been quite interesting but it doesn't leave me much time for Victory Gardening -- which I wasn’t going to do anyway. I did start to plow up (by hand) the old tennis court that the boy next door built down in the gully many years ago. Its so overgrown with mulberry trees thatits [sic] been a xx major operation so all I have yet is some peas. May get in some beans and potatoes. However, with the children all gone we dont use enough of those things to make a garden much worth while. As usual I forgot, or did not notice, Mothers Day until it was here. Anniversar- ies are just not my long suit. All my female relatives think I am hard-hearted I guess. It now actually is quitting time and we quit here on time or walk nine long miles home. Love to all,

In this letter of May 20, 1943, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) writes his mother, Laura Kephart to send her pictures of the family who are all together for the first time in over a year. His son Buddy will be inducted into the Naval Air Corps, and his daughter Barbara has been elected President of KD Sorority. He mentions that his wife Frances is visiting his sister Jane in Atlanta. He mentions that he is writing this letter at work getting paid time and a third overtime and talks about his work which he says doesn’t leave him much time for a victory garden.
