Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • July 3, 1944 Dear Mama, Your letter was welcome as always. And as usual I was behind on my letter writing. I have had, on my desk, for some days the enclosed copy of the Maryland Diamondback with a squib about Barbara that I was going to send you. All three children “made” the Hall of Fame so Barbara feels fairly satisfied. She missed out on Mortar Board, the chief Women’s hon- orary society, of which Jane was president, but Barbara never lets studies interfere with other duties and as she is getting about as much out of college life as is possible these days I dont feel too badly. She is full of pep and ‘go’, which is the thing of significance. Today Barbara is 21 years old. I can hardly realize it - the last of the children now grown up. I wonder where the years have gone. I will really miss Barbara because she was always the one who wanted to go along when I went anywhere. I think, though, that she will always come home. So will Jane for that matter. I’m not so sure of Buddy. He married a big and rather possessive family and we dont see much of him even when he is here. He means well but just has too much family. He is ‘expecting’ a real family any day now. He is back in San Francisco and is now First Pilot of FBMs, which mean he is in command of one of the big Martin Mariner patrol bombers used for patrolling the shipping lanes between the West Coast and Hawaii. He finished his advanced work down in Florida last week, his flight being to Cuba, the Bahamas etc. Jane and the baby were here for three weeks lately and went back to Atlanta. At present they are down in St. Petersburg, Fla, with Ralph. Barbara is leaving tonight to go down there with them for a couple of weeks then will go back to Atlanta and take a job for the summer as she did last year. So F. and I are all alone again. Its a big, lonely old house I can tell you. I was in New York one day last week and will probably be going up again some- time this month. Its always a hurried trip as I cant be away from the office long but I’ll try to see Janette. I’ll write to her in advance and see if we cant get togeather [sic] with Margaret. I saw George in Chicago last month and had a good visit - the first in two years. A letter yesterday said that he might be ordered to Chicago permanently though he hoped not. I’d hate to be stationed there and I guess he does not want it either. He’s hoping that they will finally settle on Spokane, Wash. which is a good town. Evidently he is sort of second in command of the Forestry Division, at least the people in their Chicago office acted very respectful toward him when I was there. Of course he deprecated any such idea. I missed seeing Cornelia
