  • January 29, 1946 Dear Mama, I’m afraid my personal correspondence is as far behind as my offi- ditto- and that is very bad indeed. I have at least 200 unanswer- ed letters on my desk some of them dating back to November and heaven only knows when they will be attended to. The new 2,4-D chemical weed-killer about which there has been a good deal in the press has just overwhelmed us. In addition I have had to attend conferences and meetings all over the map and the net result is that I’m working as I never expected to work. And me about to approach retirement. Since September I’ve been in every state in the Union except Michigan and New England - twice to New Orleans in the last 30 days. Next Tuesday I’m to give a talk at the Nation- al Canners Association annual meeting in Atlantic City, Friday attend a conference in the office of the Secty. Of Agric. To discuss “Where do we go from here in this weed thing”, leave that night for Atlanta for a conference with the Army Engineers about control of water hyacinth in Florida. Then I’ll have a breather for two weeks and go to Columbus, Ohio where I’m in charge of a pary [sic] of another Annual Meeting, then to Reno, Nevada for the Western Weed Control Conference and beyond that I’ve lost count. Incidentally I’m on the radio Saturday the 2nd at 9.39 A.M. on the Country Journal program of Columbia Broadcasting. I cant very well say “Hello, Mom” like the GIs do but I’ll just imagine you are listening. I think its a nation-wide show but am not sure. All of the above gives you a broad, general idea perhaps that I’m not fooling when I plead “Busy” these days. Oh, yes - I’ve also taken on the job of editing the church paper as per enclosed. I have to write the whole darn thing except what the minister says. So far I haven’t actually preached any sermons but I’m sure I could in a pinch. Oh, I also edited one of Caty’s stories last night. And I’ll rise to remark that he does not go for outside editing as a rule. I was flattered. Oh, yes. I wrote a story for Successful Farming, one of the big farm papers last week. It took me all day Sat. and Sun. but I ought to get paid pretty well for it. I’m beginning to realize what authors and editors go through. What a life*** I fully intended to tell you right away about the advent of Barbara Ann Keller on the 13th. I had a bet with Jane that it would be on my birthday but I lost. She’s a fine little baby, weighed about 8 lbs. and is a non-cryer so far. Just to show you how busy I’ve been I’ve seen Buddy’s baby only twice and she is two months old. Buddy, by the way, has a new job. Mary Ann’s brother-in-law is in business in Washington and Buddy has quit IBM to go with him as a sort of Business Manager. Its a combination building supplies, coal, feed, cement (Wholesale), and I dont know xxx what. The Xxxx br.-in-law is named Morrison Clark. He’s a very fine fellow a fine business man and seems to be very fond of Buddy. It seemed like a mistake to leave so good a company as IBM but, as Buddy says, you never make money working for someone else and Buddy has unbounded
