  • right next to you. George and Pauline live only three blocks from us but we often do not see them for weeks at a time. When we do get to- gether there is a great jabbing fest and we catch up on what everyone has been doing. Its always been that way. Now, with my job at the World Bank I often do not have any word from home for two or three weeks and I have a dickens of a time trying to keep up with all the various branches of the family. I did not know for several months about the troubles that the Fernows have been having and I still dont know the whole story. All this does not mean, however, that any of us have lost one bit of interest in any of the rest. We think of each other often, I know, and do what we can to keep in touch. Some years ago we started a sort of round robin letter. I dont know what happened to that but it would be an excellent thing to revive. I would do my best to keep it away from home so much. I think that if it could be arranged so that Jane would look after my end of it it would not get stalled at this end. I’ll see what I can do about it. No, I did not go to Italy after all. Something came up and thetrip [sic] was postponed. The present plan is that I will go to Italy sometime this spring. There are also plans for trips to Peru, Australia and Iraq but we never know which, if any, of such plans will finally go into effect. I am sort of like a fireman ready to go out on trips on short notice. Sometime this spring, when roads get better, we will come up to see you. Barbara would like to come, I know, and she is a good driver so we can spell each other. Barbara is working in the State Department x and may not be able to get away for more than three or four days but we could make it over a week-end. Meanwhile dont worry about us. We are all busy and well we often think about Granny and talk about her even if we dont get down to writing. I often wish that you could come down here during the winter when the weather is so bad in Boonville. But with Frances and Barbara both working and with me away a good deal I’m afraid you would find it prety [sic] lonesome. This house isnt used very much these days except for sleeping. I thought that within the next few months we might relax and take things a little easier but with this new war business coming on we are back in the frantic days of World War II. I sure did not expect ever to have go through with that again. But the Administration has certainly manage to get us all fouled up. I’d better not get going on that topic, however or I’ll never quit. Its my favorite gripe. We are always glad to have a letter from Boonville. So whenever you feel like sending us a little note we will be tremendously happy to receive it. And in the meantime I’ll try to not let so long a time pass before I write again. With lots of love from all of us on Valentine’s Day to Mama.
