Leonard Kephart to Barbara Bird, November 28, 1951

In this letter of November 28, 1951, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) responds to his sister Barbara Bird by sending her $100 and lets her know that he will contribute $100 a month for their mother’s care. He says he never received her letter from July, but it could have been lost in his house. He feels that if their mother is “reasonably content in a nursing home that is the best plan.”

November 28, 1951 7306 Maple Ave. Dear Barbara, Your two letters about Mama are here and I enclose $100 to start things going. After this I will contribute $100 a month as long as it is needed. Provided, of course my job with the Bank holds out. I have no reason to think it wont but of course the future is uncertain these days with everyone. I returned only last week from Turkey and had no idea what the situation was. Your letter of July probably came but we had the x house full of painters at that time and I’ve not been able to find anything since. Probably its still around somewhere unopened. I’ve been trying all year to get up to Ithaca but have been away so much that I’ve had all I could do to keep this house in order let alone taking any trips. I want to get this in the 7 o’clock mail so will be brief. In essence I agree with all you say and hope that my contribution will keep things going. You have been wonderful to have taken it for so long. And Roy deserves a medal for his forbearance. I’d have Mama here but F. positively refuses. She took care of her own mother for years and thinks that’s enough. If Mama can be reasonab [sic] content in a nursing home that is the best plan. I just dont know of any alternative if she is not. Its 6.40 and must get this up to the box. Love to all
