Commonwealth of Virginia. DEPARTMENT OP AGRICULTURE, G. W. Koiner,,Commissioner. Richmond, Sept. 13, 1901. Prof. J. A.. Holmes, State Geologist, Chapel Hill, IT. C. Dear Sir:- Your letter to the Governor has been referred to me for reply. I also return the letters requested. The Bill referred to by Senator Tate and Delegate Feath- erstone passed the Legislature and was approved by the Governor Feb. 15th, 1901, and reported in the acts of the extra session on page 274. You can get a printed copy of this act by writing to the Clerk of the House of Delegates . This Bill gives the "consent of the State of Virginia to the acquisition by the U. S., by purchase or gift, or by condemnation according to law, of such land in Virginia as in the opinion of the Federal Government may be needed for the establishment of such a National Forest Reserve in this region, provided, etc., etc. Yours truly, G. This series of letters has to do with legislation proposed by the by the Appalachian National Park Association. On January 4, 1900, the association submitted a Memorial to Congress; on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park; several states passed resolutions in support of the park; in January 1901, President McKinley expressed support of the project. Although the organization had success early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905.
