  • Gen Howe had his headquarter there at one time. When he landed he thought it was an island and he had been betrayed. He was hoodwinked by Charity Thomas Ferris whose husband at the time was confined in the old Sugar House here in the city. She had a stupid appraising small colored boy. The officers used him to run errands to town, and allowed him to sit in the room when they were “in conference.” Mrs. Charity (my great great great (?) grandmother) taught him to remember what was said until he could repeat it to her.
