Laura Kephart to Dear Girls, March 27, 1934

In this letter of March 27, 1934, Laura Kephart writes her daughters regarding her will. She would like her daughters to split her possessions equally among their daughters taking into account what they already have. She gives instructions for her funeral wishes.

Mar. 27, 1934. Dear girls; As I have nothing to will, I am having one made, Therefoe— Will each of you make a list of the things that you know that I possess-check off what you would like for your girls (or girl)-send it to me and I will try to straighten it out to the best advantage off all. I will then return to you and you can settle it among yourselves . Margaret is to have the use of whatever she wants during her lifetime or as long as she wants them. She is to make a will distributing the things according to your settlement. Mr. Fingar says this is the best way to fix it; better than foe me to itemize them in my will. The princioal reason for making a will is to settle the cre- mation business. If I will it to be done there can be no talk about it. There is to be no casket or other unnecessary expense, except I would like to have the ashes sent to Bryson City and buried beside your father. This will not be obligatory ; it will depend on the expense; it is of no real consequence-just a whim of mine. Please make out the list as soon as you conveniently can. When making it bear in mind what of the old things you already have had. I want each grand-daughter to have us equal share as nearly as possible. Peace be with you—I think that THINGS are a pest. Hoping you are not the same. O am saying granddaughters because most boys don’t especially care for such things. any way it looks the better plan, to me. Lovingly, Granny
