Jan. 10 1940 Dear Leonard et al- To celebrate your birthday the Riley farm house & contents burned to the ground-about 6:30 P.M. The Palmers saved a box of papers & a kitchen chair. I saved the trunk of shawls. The clothes on my back-the oldest I have is all I have left. Hoping you are not the same & will never try to celebrate in this way Much love to all Mama P.S. can’t write much as I have no glasses! Mama is all right I am sure except for a deep sense of loss & shock. You never saw anything like the suddenness with which that house

In this letter of January 10, 1940, Laura Kephart and Lucy Fernow write Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) about a fire that destroyed the house Laura was living in. Laura writes that she was able to save a trunk of shawls and the Palmers (who ran the boarding house) were able to save a box of papers and a chair. Everything else was lost. Lucy writes that their mom is alright, but feeling loss and shock. She lets Leonard know that their mom will likely accept the invitation to stay with Cornelia in Lansing for some weeks.
