  • Jan. 10 1940 Dear Leonard et al- To celebrate your birthday the Riley farm house & contents burned to the ground-about 6:30 P.M. The Palmers saved a box of papers & a kitchen chair. I saved the trunk of shawls. The clothes on my back-the oldest I have is all I have left. Hoping you are not the same & will never try to celebrate in this way Much love to all Mama P.S. can’t write much as I have no glasses! Mama is all right I am sure except for a deep sense of loss & shock. You never saw anything like the suddenness with which that house
