620 THE LAST OF THE EASTERN WILDERNESS NEAR RAINBOW FALLS ON THE MILL CREEK TRAIL TO MOUNT I.E CONTE dred square miles of this region consist of uninhabited forest wilderness. Last summer it was necessary to make an accurate map of the district for use of the Appalachian Park Commission. The work could not be done on the ground in time for the commission's report, and so an army aviator, Lieutenant Williams, flew back and forth over the Smokies for many weeks, making a photographic map from the air. He did not see a house or a human being, except in a few spots where some lumbermen were at work. What a .strange survival of primitive conditions, what astonishing isolation! This 16-page article, “The Last of the Eastern Wilderness: An Article on the Proposed Great Smoky National Park,” is a classic piece by Horace Kephart. The article appeared in the 1926 edition of the magazine “World’s Work.” The article includes photographs by James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976) was a noted photographer, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Throughout his life, Kephart wrote many articles supporting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The article is shown here along with several versions of the original typed manuscript.
