In this letter of September 18, 1854 L.M. Edmonston writes to her sister Laura asking for news of family. A letter of 1864 was written on the back of this letter (see "DI to dear brothers" of July 18, 1864).

Webster Jackson Co N Car Sept 18th 1854 My Dear Laura It is with much pleasure that I approach my table for the purpose of writing you a short note to inform you that I am tolerably well. Dr is not very well at present but he is gone over to Court this morning. My principal object for writing to you is to hear from Addie. We have not heard any from her since Mr. Osborne passed and as we are very anxious to hear how she is I thought I would drop you a few lines. we have been looking for a letter every mail but [word struck out by her] greatly to our surprise we haven’t received a line from you. I shall soon have to cease writing as this is court week and I have so much to do. I have nothing of interest to write you. There has been some deaths and there is a good deal of sickness in this County. I would be very much grat- ified to see you particularly at the present time as I am alone which is very common in day time you know Well, I must come to a close for I must go and get dinner. Give my respects to all and receive a double portion to your self. Your Sister until death L M Edmonston Likely Dr. Rufus Edmonston. The Courthouse was being built at this time and the first court session would be held in 1855 in the new building. [-- to indicate end of sentence ?].
