  • TIMBER INTERESTS OPPOSE APPALACHIAN NATIONAL PARK. 7/21/25 By Kenneth Watson. Washington Bureau, 1323 New York Avenue. WASHINGTON, July — Lumber interests are endeavoring to block, to some extent, the plan for a big eastern national park in the Great Smoky Mountains. These interests have timber holdings in North Carolina and wish to see that part of the project which would lie in that state abandoned. Their attitude is likely to result in a spirited fight. Cognizance of this opposition has been taken by the National Park Commission appointed by Secretary Work to determine the park boundaries. In a public statement the commission says: "Owing to the opposition of certain business interests in North Carolina to the original plan for a national park in the Great Smoky Mountains, the Commission may find it necessary to modify its boundary as originally contemplated and consider the advisability of the creation of a national park which shall lie largely in Tennessee." Unsigned letters have been widely disseminated over North Carolina advocating a national forest for that state instead of a national park. The cutting of timber under government supervision is permitted in a national forest. The friends of the national park project charge these letters up to lumber interests who wish to cut this timber. The attitude of the commission is that North Carolina must speedily thresh this question out for itself; otherwise plans will proceed for a national park with that part of the Great Smokies left out. In Virginia and Tennessee great enthusiasm has been aroused and necessary funds are being raised.
