Cable address Telephone Bhevloc —Washington MAIN 6040 1322 New York Ave., Northwest lEnMnjtot, jfc €> JUT.y 22,1925. Mr.Horace Kephart, Bryson City,Term, Dear Mr.Kephart:- I am enclosing a story which I have just written for all of out 26 newspapers picturing briefly what the situation is in North Carolina with reference to the proposed national part. As I used a long stony by you sometime ago when a portion of your writings were introduced in the Congressional Record I thought that probably you would like to write a_,brief story of what the public spirited citizens of jjorth CaroiinaV are going to do to overcome this opposition. I am handling the situation in a detailed manner for our paper at Knoxville - The lews- and would be interested in hearing from you at any time you have any development in the park situation to comment upon. It is understood that the opposition referred to in my story is being launched by two large lumber companies who wish to cut out all the choice timber on their holdings before the area is turned over to the government. Rather than risk jeopardising the entire national park project for the east, the Southern Appalachian national Park Commission certainly will go through with their present intentions of divorcing the controversial area in I.C. entirely from the boundaries they will recommend to Congress, unless citizens of Horth Carolina get behind a movement to get the park and overcome the lumber opposition. If you know of such intentions or care to comment on what you think is going to happen will be pleased to use a story from youx in the interests of pushing the park project, which all of our papers are endorsing. Yours sincerely, Kenneth R.Watson, 1222 Hew York Avenue©

In a letter to Horace Kephart on July 22, 1925, Kenneth R. Watson sends Kephart his proposed article (dated July 21, 1925) for 26 newspapers regarding the North Carolina national park proposal. Mr. Watson inquires of Kephart if he would write a piece on the citizens’ views of the lumber industry’s opposition to the establishment of a national park.
