Come on down to the Library and look at all of the information that we have, who knows you may find something that you had been looking for years for. Memberships for renewing members are due the first of the year. When you get yours, think about a gift membership to someone who might like one. (Hint Hint! They make great Christmas gifts) Work will continue on the update to the Cemetery Book, any help that you could do would help. Call and let us know if you would be willing to help. As some of you may know, Ruth Crawford Shuler, founding member of JCGS, has been slightly under the weather lately. She has been in rehabilitation at a center here in Jackson County. We are confident in saying, she would appreciate your prayers and good wishes. Cards can be sent here to the office and we will make sure that they get to her forthwith. Here is just a few with information about each. Mary Liza Walkingstick Walker was born 1818 and died 1890. She was the daughter of John Marcus Walkingstick (27 Jan 1797 - Jul 1866) and Amanda Lou Knight (1801 -). She married Thomas Hezekiah Frady, 15 Jan 1830 in Haywood Co., NC. He was the son of Henry J. Frady (1782-1870) and Polly De Freese (1780-) and was born 1804 and died 1883. They had the following children: Marcus Lafayette Frady (1831-1915); James Hezekiah Frady (1832-1865); Henry John Frady (1834-1880); Harvey Ervin Frady (1835- 1862); General George Washington Frady (1836-1863); Harry Frady (1837-); Thomas Jackson Frady (1840-1862); Arelius Walker Frady(1844- 1863); Talethia Amanda Frady (1845-1911); Louisa Frady (1848-1911); Samantha Frady (1855-1901); Mahaley Frady (1857-); Manly M. JCGS Vice President Norma Clayton shared this 1918 picture of mine workers in Cullowhee. It is a copy of a photo that belonged to her grandmother, Delphia Deitz Potts. Clayton's great-grandfather, William Amberson Deitz, is marked with an X. Clayton also has a small ledger that lists some of the men who worked at the Long Branch mica mine in 1916 and 1917. JCGS Vice President Norma Clayton has a small ledger that belonged to her great-grandfather, William Amberson Deitz. It came to Norma from her mother, Annie Lee Potts Bryson. Annie Lee got it from her mother, Delphia Deitz Potts. William Amberson Deitz was born 21 Feb 1878 and died 16 May 1928. He married Melvina Stiles (9 Dec 1882- 28 Mar 1930) on 16 Dec 1900. Along with three of their daughters, they are buried in East Fork Cemetery. The family believed the ledger book to be from C J . Harris' Hog Rock clay mine, because they knew Will Deitz had worked there, Norma said. However, Bill Crawford, one of the founding members of the JCGS, doesn't believe it's from Hog Rock. "Those fellows it lists all lived on East Fork," he said, after taking a look at the names in the ledger. Norma said it could well have been from a different mine; the first page of the ledger refers to the "BN Mine," but the second page refers to Long Branch. As Bill pointed out, East Fork and Cullowhee's Long Branch section are on opposite sides of the same mountain. The listings in the book include dates from April 1916 to April 1919; "The History of Jackson County" mentions a mica operation on East Fork in 1890 and says World War I "spurred mica production in the county to three boxcar loads a week by 1917." 103 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol III Norma also has a photo from her grandmother Delphia that shows Delphia's father, Will Deitz, with other mine workers. That same photo is in'Victoria Casey-McDonald's book, "The African Americans of Jackson County" with a caption indicating it is workers at the Long Branch mine. According to John Bell's chapter, "Economic Activities" in "The History of Jackson County" mica was the county's second most profitable mineral after kaolin. Daniel D. Davies discovered mica deposits on the road between Webster and Franklin in 1858 and displayed samples at the S.C. state fair in 1866. The first page of Deitz's ledger is dated April 1916, and lists supplies that were likely used in the mining operation: 10 pieces of steel, four picks, two steel hammers and one rock hammer; two shovels; one bucket and rope; one water bucket; some dynamite and caps; one-half roll of fews (likely fuse) and a small amount of wax; and one wheelbarrow. The next pages contain monthly records of mine workers' names, days worked and pay rate, with consecutive listings from April 1916 through January 1917. It appears that the crew typically worked six 10-hour days each week. The ledger includes 31 columns, simply numbered 1-31. The timekeeper, presumably Deitz, records the number of hours each man worked per day and puts an "x" in the column of days not worked. An "x" occurs every seventh day, indicating the men worked every day except Sunday. Deitz is listed first every month, and his pay rate is $2 per day throughout. For working 27, 10-hour days, he received $54. Another Deitz, Columbus, earned $1.40 per day and thus made $36.40 for 26 days worked. Most made either $ 1.40 or $ 1.50 per day. In later months, when the number of workers increased, newer laborers were apparently hired on at a rate of $ 1.25 or $ 1 per day. Here is a listing, by month, of the men who worked the mine. It's interesting to note that spellings evolve and change over the course of the nine months; they are recorded here as they appear. Norma did tell me that the man listed both as "Thane" and "Than" Deitz was her great-grandfather's brother, Nathaniel Deitz. April 1916 - Will Deitz, Fate Shuler, Solomon Hoyal, A. Crawford, Eb Shular. May 1916 - Will Deitz, Columbus Deitz, Shermen Deitz, Laurnce Deitz, Than Deitz, Zalie Morgan, Charley Gibbs. June 1916 - Will Deitz, Columbus Deitz, Shermen Deitz, Zalie Morgan, Claire Cotter. The June page also lists "timber for Hooper, 75 cents." July 1916 - Will Deitz, Columbus Deitz, Zalie Morgan, Shurm Deitz, Thane Deitz, Arch Cown. After the payroll records are listed these other expenses: "Timber from Hooper, $ 1.75; Fidill Cabe for snaking timber, 75 cents." August 1916 - Will Deitz, Columbus Deitz, Sherm Deitz, Thane Deitz, Jake Deitz, Arch Cowan, Enis Buchanan. Below the work record is the entry, "9 sticks of timber-Jim Bryson," with no price. September 1916 - Will Deitz, Columbus Deitz, Sherm Deitz, Thane Deitz, Jake Deitz, Arch Cowan. October 1916 - Will Deitz, Columbus Deitz, Jake Deitz, Ed Buchanan, Gather Morgan, Thane Deitz, Elven Cowen, Corsey Hooper, Zalie Morgan, Hermen Morgan, Lemon Morgan, Dee Beck. The other entry is "Nails from WJ). Wike." November 1916 - Will Deitz, Sherm Deitz, Thane Deitz, Edd Buchanan, Dee Beck, Hermon Morgan, Gather Morgan, Tom Broglin, Jake Deitz, Sterlin Deitz, Richard Hooper. December 1916 - Will Deitz, Sherm Deitz, Ed Buchanan, Dee Beck, Gather Morgan, Edd Love, Fred Laira, Mack Gibbs, John B. Frady. January 1917 - Will Deitz, Sherman Deitz, Ed Buchanan, Zalie Morgan, J.W. Frady, Edd Love, Fred Liria, Memphus Buchanan, Thane Deitz, Columbus Deitz. The final page with names is not dated but lists W.A. Deitz, Brice Louis, Kim Louis, Sherman Davis, Fred Lowry, Mule, Columbus Deitz, J.W. Frady and Thane Deitz. The final pages are from April 1919 and appear to list personal expenses for the Deitz family. At the top of the page is written "Wilson Bros," perhaps referring to a store in operation at the time. Entries include: April 3rd - Flour, meal, shoulder meat; April 5th - Shoes, dress, pants, cash $1; April 14 - Meat, lard 10 lbs. $1.35, snuff and tobacco 25 104 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol. Ill T a b l e o f C o n t e n t s Table of Contents 97 JCGS Photo Album 98-102 William Amberson Deitz Ledger 103-108 1951 & 1952 Jackson County Death Certificates 109-112 L i b r a r y Acquisitions 113 Christmas Invitation 114 Crawford Receives Heritage Award 115-116 Descendants of William Solomon P a r k e r , Sr 117-120 Outline Descendant Report for Frederick (Baumgarten) Bumgarner 121-124 Two J C G S Members Win Award 125 Announcement , 126 Year End Reports 127-128 1880 Jackson County Census Records 129-132 Descendants of J o h n Thomas T a t h am 133-136 This and That 137-138 Membership 139-141 Cruise-In Fundraiser 142 Index 143-144 C O R R E C T I O N : I n t h e 2 0 1 9 V o l 1, w e m i s t a k e n l y u s e d t h e w r o n g l a s t n a m e f or H e l e n C o w a n B o b o v i t c h . With his permission. One of Western Carolina University's 2019 Mountain Heritage Awards, given in honor of achievements in historic preservation and outstanding cultural contributions in the region, was presented to Bill Crawford of Sylva on Sept. 28. 1 V L " ^ i p , J>7 ,r, ^ O Western Carolina University Chancellor, Kelli R. Brown and award recipient, Bill Crawford Photo curtesy of Ashley Evans, WCU Staff Photographer The awards recognize an individual and an organization for distinguished service, accomplishments, influence or expertise in maintaining the cultural viability of the mountain region, with recipients chosen by a committee comprised of community and university representatives. Crawford, a founding member of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, is the recipient of the individual award; the Cashiers Historical Society received the honor for organizations. Crawford, a grassroots historian of Jackson, Swain and Macon counties and local genealogist, is one of five generations of his family to have attended the institution now known as Western Carolina University, a precedent that was started by his great-grandfather enrolling in the Cullowhee Academy in 1894. It is the forebears and previous generations of Southern Appalachia "who made us what we are today," Crawford said recently while volunteering at the Jackson County Genealogy Society office in Sylva. His own interests began with his grandparents. "They were kin to everybody from Waynesville to Bryson City. And there were two things they talked about, especially in the wintertime: the Bible and kinfolks," Crawford said. "I reckon that just rubbed off on me. They'd tell me stuff and I'd write it all down. I'd put down where it came from and all that." 116 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol. Ill Crawford served as the primary consultant for "Decoration Day in the Mountains" a book published by UNC Press in 2010 about cemetery traditions in the Appalachians. He was given the Brown-Hudson Award from the North Carolina Folklore Society in 2015. In presenting the award, WCU Chancellor Kelli R. Brown recognized Crawford's unique contributions to the region. "I wonder, is there anybody who doesn't know Bill Crawford?" Brown said. "I am told that Bill is possibly the best single source of information on the people and places of the western counties in the state. If he doesn't know, he can point you in the right direction. "Along with his vast knowledge of Western North Carolina history and genealogy, and his humble nature and willingness to share and learn, he is an ambassador for the best of downhome mountain living. "He has been a part of every Mountain Heritage Day but one. And, I'm proud to say, Bill is one of five generations of his family, beginning with his great-grandfather, to have attended Western Carolina University. That is simply incredible." The Mountain Heritage Award was first presented in 1976, and the recipient was the late John Parris, a Jackson County native, newspaperman and author. Parris, who died in 1999, was widely regarded for his long-running "Roaming the Mountains" columns in the Asheville Citizen-Times. He helped establish WCU's journalism studies program and championed the establishment of a center to preserve the traditions and cultures of the WNC mountains, which led to the founding of WCU's Mountain Heritage Center. Award categories for groups and organizations were added in 2006. 117 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol. Ill D e s c e n d a n t s o f W i l l i a m S o l o m o n P a r k e r , S r .
