Great time to get your genealogy out and get ready for winter and a great opportunity to work on it in the months to come. Our Fundraiser in June was great. We had all types of music form gospel to bluegrass and some 60's hits thrown in for good measure. Padgett McCoy's chili for the hot dogs and bargains galore in the silent auction. We have brought back the annual July picnic. This year it was held at the Caney Fork Community Building. Charlie Shuler gave a presentation on the first settlers in the Caney Fork area. We had plenty of great food but ran short of chairs. We have a rough estimate of 75 people attending. It was great to see the community come out to participate also. As always, if you have pictures, a story, an idea for an article for JTJ, feel free to share. Sharing is the backbone of all genealogical research. ^y M e m b e r s h i p s a r e d u e a t t h e f i r s t o f t h e y e a r. A b a r g a i n f o r j u s t $ 2 0 . Currently, there are the Scott Foundation Scholarship, The Robert "Larry" Crawford Scholarship and the William Loranzo "Bill" Crawford Scholarship. Each of the essays that the applicants wrote is included. Always remember that any donations to the scholarship funds are tax deductible, so consider making a donation to one or all of these fine scholarships. C C Receiving one of the Scott Foundation Scholarships is Julio E. Reyes, the son of Julian Reyes of Norton. He graduated from Blue Ridge High School. While at Blue Ridge, he was a member of the Yearbook Staff, the Choir, and the Frisbee Club. He volunteered in the community by working with his Church Youth Group, Manna Food Bank, CDL for his Church and at the Cashiers Valley Vet. He plans to attend Asheville-Buncombe Tech, pursing a degree in the Aviation Pilot Program. Living as a Latino in a Mexican house is very difficult, and everyone has secrets. For me, my dad and his history are one of the biggest secrets that I still need to find out. My dad has kept from me many secrets and some of them I know and some I still need to find out. One of the secrets tat my dad tried to hide from me was the truth about mother. I have never met my mom or even seen a picture of her, and it is really bard sometimes for me when it comes to Mother's Day and sometimes on my birthday. But just because my dad has tried to keep me from knowing who she is, I recently found my birth certificate that shows my mom's name and honestly, I still do not know how to describe what I am feeling. I secretly called my aunt in Mexico that sed to live with my dad and mom when we were in New York and the only thing she told me was that my mother and father were really hard into drugs and alcohol before and after I was born until when 1 was 3 months old I got really sick and my aunt had to take me to the hospital in which they told her that I needed to have an open heart surgery and replace my aorta valve at only 4 months. My aunt told me that because o the surgery mydad had to send'me to Mexico with my aunt which I lived there for 7 years until one day my dad appeared in Mexico and brought me to North Carolina but without my mom. Every year I asked my father about my dad and all he said to me was "No te preocupes de eso, major ve a las escuela y estudia" which translates to "Do not worry about that, just for to school and study." It is hard growing up without a mom and all you now about her is her name and the place she was born The only thing I do not gt is her last name, I could not even pronounce it until one day I asked my American History teacher and he said that her last name could possibly come from Europe and I that was true, I could get some public records. I really want to take the DNA testing kit from Ancestry to know a little more about myself, but it is expensive for me, but hopefully one day I will be able to find her but if its Gods will or me to not now her then it is probably the best for me. 55 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol 2 Receiving the other Scott Foundation Scholarship was Paul James Hinson. He is a graduate of Smoky Mountain High School and the son of Shane and Kim Williams. He participated at school by playing varsity football and varsity baseball. He has participated in several volunteer activities including; Tuck River Clean up; Wood program for Elderly; Special Olympics and with the Special Needs Class at SMHS and with the middle school and Little League baseball programs. He will be attending Catawba Valley Community College pursuing a degree in College Transfer. He will also be playing baseball for the College. ^ y Learning about family history is important to me; one I am hoping to learn more about. Let me give you a little of my own history. I was born October 31, 2000. I was left in the hospital by my biological mother. After some time in foster care, I lived with my biological father for about a year. I then went to live with my cousin (on my biological father's side) and his wife; I call them mom and dad. Their names are Shane and Kim. My biological father passed away when I was seven years old. My biological father had a large family and the survivors still get together all of the time. I have many aunts, uncles and cousins that support me on a daily basis, even I they live 4+ hours away. When we all get together, I enjoy hearing the stories that my aunts tell. It is neat to hear about my history from them. My grandma has even made a family history book that tells the story of their lives. This is a piece of our family history that I will be able to pass down to my kids one day. My mom, Kim has some unique stories about her family. Mary Surratt is her ancestor. Mary Surratt was the first woman in the United States to be hung. She was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. She owned a boarding house in Washington, DC. John Wilkes Booth stayed there before assassinating the President. This may not be something to be proud of but, it is neat to be part of this history. Thankfully, there is some research that says that she was actually innocent of conspiracy. I hope this is true. ^ y Although the family stories are neat to hear, genealogical research will enable me to find out where I came from and see if I may be related to people that helped make history. For me, however, I would also like to do more genealogical to find out things such as medical history. That will become more important as I get older. This type of research can also help people find long lost relatives. ^y 56 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol 2 V^' Linda Avery Hopson was the winner of the Robert "Larry" Crawford Scholarship. She was a graduate of Jackson County Early College. The daughter of Chip and April Ferguson of Caney Fork. She volunteers with Moses Creek Baptist Church, singing at church and at the Senior Center in Jackson County. She has participated in the Bluegrass Club, National Honor Society, serving as president of the JC Early College chapter of the National Honor Society. She has shadowed several Doctors and Dentists in the area. She has also volunteered with Manna Food Bank, WCU Lego and Engineering Camp, and assistant coach for volleyball camps around Jackson County. She is planning on attending Western Carolina University and obtain a Bachelor and a Masters Degree in Speech Therapy. C My name is Linda Avery Hopson I am a graduating senior at Jackson County Early College. I have not always been interested in family heritage but as I have gotten older, I have gained an interest in learning about my ancestry. I am quite familiar with the lineage on my maternal grandfather's side. I am a fifth great granddaughter of Colonel William Waightstill Avery. Colonel Waightstill was the first attorney general in North Carolina. He was also one of the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Colonel Waightstill is also remembered for his duel with Andrew Jackson. Many historical documents about Colonel Waightstill Avery can be found in the Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Conversely, my maternal grandmother's ancestry was a bit more mysterious to me because she and her siblings were placed in the Grandfather Home for Children when she was 7 years old. She remained in the orphanage until she was 18 years old. Our family has always discussed my grandfather's ancestry but my grandmother never really discussed her ancestry. This mystery caused me to want to dig into her family's past and find out more about my heritage from my maternal grandmother's line. C My father, mother and I made a plan to research my grandmother's paternal lineage first, the Green family. My grandmother, Mama Lin knew she had family from Watauga County so this was a great help to start our search. We took her father's name and used Ancestry.com to start our research. We dug into the information fund on the ancestry cite and mapped Mama Lin's Greene family lineage all the way back to William Green who was born in 1671 in England. We created a Greene family tree and Greene family album for Mama Lin and presented it to her on her 75th birthday. My parents and I walked through each page of the album with her as we referred to the family tree for reference. Mama Lin never believed she had a heritage worthy of discussing. Through this ancestral project she found out that she had a judge in her family, Judge William Greene of Hunterdon County, NJ in 1714. Mama Lin also found out she had a grandfather who was a Revolutionary War soldier and saw the actual U.S. Pension 57 Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol 2 Roll of 1835 which listed his name as a recipient of a government pension for his service in the war. We were able to take her on the journey of her Greene Family's journey over the century's from England to New Jersey, next to Rowan County, N.C. and finally to Watauga County, NC. Mama Lin was so proud and so excited to know that her family tree had brave and notable figures to talk about with others. She also found out her Greene family had deep Christian roots which was so touching to my grandmother. Mama Lin knew her parents had divorced and could not take care of three children, but other than the heritage of her parent's divorce and her childhood years in the orphanage - she thought she did not have a lineage to discuss with our family. Due to our ancestral research, my Mama Lin has a family tree to hang her hat on, well, you know what I mean. This family project has given me great appreciation for the power of understanding your ancestral roots. The knowledge helps us look at our family members in a new way. The ancestral information also helps us look at ourselves with different lenses to better understand why we have certain interests or even why we like certain types of foods. Even if I find some negative or troublesome information during ancestral research, it is important to take the information and learn from your heritage. One day I might have a great grandchild who leams all about me through ancestral research and I hope I give him/her something good to talk about! v ^ The fourth scholarship, The William Loranzo "Bill" Crawford Scholarship was awarded to Hannah King. She is the daughter of Ricky and Karen King of Whittier. She graduated from Smoky Mountain High School. She played volleyball and was captain of the softball team. She was a member of National Honor Society, Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) and was a member of the Student Council. She volunteered with the Special Olympics at SMHS. She has volunteered with her Church at the Soup Kitchen in Haywood County. She plans to attend Greensboro College and obtain a degree in Biology. According to the World Bank, there are over 7.5 billion people that are currently living on Earth. Out of all of these people, there is not a single two tat are exactly same, not even a set of identical twins. Every person has certain differences that allows them to vary from one another. This is due to genetics, Genetics is the genes, traits and characteristics that are passed down through families. Even though every person's genetic make-up is different, genes heavily depict whether a person will have straight or curly hair, the color of their eyes, and the amount of melanin in their skin This allows many races to have common dominant traits that they are known for, such as African Americans having brittle curly black hair with dark eyes and the Irish as having red hair and fair skin. A person's genetics explains why they look and act the way they do. Genetics are a direct result of a person's parents, grandparents, family and their ancestors. A person's last name is popularly used in order to differentiate a person. Their last name often files them into a bigger category filled with ^ y Journeys Through Jackson 2019 Vol 2 C their direct family members and other people with similar genetics. In many cases, a person's last name could have changed throughout time, making ir harder for researchers to link a person to the ancestors. People commonly change their names for reasons such as whenever they get adopted or move to another country. My great-great grandfather, Cance Davis Inman, had his last name changed as soon as he entered public school. Cance Davis Inman's dad was John Inman. John Inman passed away and his wife remarried to Logan Carnes. When Cance Davis Inman entered public school is classmates and teachers associated him with his step-father Logan Carnes. My great-great grandfather's name got changed form Cance Davis Inman to Carnes sue to the simple association preferences. This has caused a shift in names in Jackson County. Th men who passed on their last names to their families passed on Carnes instead of Inman. Now in Jackson County, I feel as if there are more people with the last name Carnes and although Inman's are still very popular, they are not as common as they would have been had his name not changed. This made filling out a family tree very complicated as my grandfather never knew of this name change until after he started researching. Name changes make it even harder for other people to keep up with who people are. Many criminals instantly change their name in order to not be known. Although my great-great grandfather's name was changed it also made it somewhat confusing as to why the Carnes family name did not continue throughout the men's side of the family tree C C Even though a last name is something that is merely simple it represents a family's heritage. Many families have an unknown historical background. Last names and genetics both make up the characteristics of why a person is who they are. Through the testing and interpretation of DN and genetics, this information has become more readily available. It is important and also interesting to know who one's ancestors are so one can try to understand if there are any patterns of genetic diseases. This allows doctors to be more precautious and better understanding of a person's health. Knowing family history and one's ancestors is not only interesting, it is also very important.
