W V > 54 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 C A b s a l o m H o o p e r H o n o r ed O Absalom Hooper was recently honored with a ceremony celebrating his service in the Revolutionary War. Several people contributed to make this article possible. Thank you to Jean Hooper Scott for the first part and Norma Bryson Clayton for the second part and for use of her pictures. Absalom Hooper Honored Six veterans of the American Revolutionary War who later lived in Jackson County are known to have been buried here in Jackson County. Banners of these patriots can be seen displayed at the foot of the court house on military holidays. Among these veterans is Absalom Hooper, who was born near the mouth of the Green River on the "Main" Broad River. Exact year of birth varies among documents but 1764 seems the most likely date based on service records and other documents. He died on December 9, 1845 in Jackson County, NC. He is buried in the East La Porte Cemetery in Cullowhee. Little is known of his early life; however, it is thought his father died at an early age and his mother was a British loyalist. Despite years of research by many gifted family historians, the father of Absalom is still unknown. Hooper ran away from home as a young boy and enlisted in the Continental Army. He served in the 1st Battle of Charleston and was with General Howe in the Florida Peninsula during the St. Mary's and Brier Creek campaigns. He was wounded in the right arm by a musket ball in the Battle of Spring Hill in Savannah. During the second siege of Charleston he was wounded in the left thigh and captured by the British. However, he escaped and rejoined the Colonial Army in Georgia. He participated in the siege of Augusta. His service was mostly with the First Regiment SC Continental Line and Elijah Clark's Georgia militia. After the war, Hooper settled in the portion of Haywood County that later became Jackson. He and his wife Sarah raised thirteen children. Hooper was recently honored in a proclamation issued by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners which noted April 21, 2018 as Absalom Hooper Day in the county. A grave marking dedication was held on that day. It was sponsored by Blue Ridge Mountains Chapter Georgia Society and the Western Waters Chapter North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Speakers included Sid Turner, BUI Palmer, Jerry Taylor, Jason Edwards and Bruce Maney of the Georgia Sons of the American Revolution. All speakers except Bill Palmer, the State Color Guard Commander are descendants of Absalom Hooper. Also speaking was Joe Sam Queen, President of the Western Waters (NC) Chapter of the SAR and Jackson County Commissioner Brian McMahan, also a descent of Absalom. The unveiling of the SAR marker was by Law Enforcement Officer Brandon Hooper, also a descendant. After the unveiling and dedication of the SAR marker, and the presentation of wreaths by numerous descendants, taps by a descendant, and the Mourn Muskets Salute by the Colonel Elijah Clarke Militia, descendants had the option of being introduced, mostly 4th or 5th grand-daughters and grand-sons. The Daughters of the American Revolution were well represented also, many in vintage dress. A marker was ordered by Mrs. T. H. Hooper from the U.S. Headstone Applications for Military Veterans and erected in 1931. At some point, that marker was replaced by the large stone currently at the site, possibly by the Daughters of the American Revolution or family members. Submitted by Jean Hooper Scott 4* great-granddaughter Note: Sources for this document include "A Glimpse into the Past" by Mary Hooper Crocker, The Sylva Herald, official documents and the program. • ^ 55 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 On Saturday, April 21, Absalom Hooper, a Revolutionary War veteran who lived in Jackson County, was honored with a Grave Marking Dedication conducted by the Blue Ridge Mountains Chapter, Georgia Society, of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Western Waters Chapter, North Carolina Society, Sons of the American Revolution. As part of the application process, they are required to write a short article about their family, local landmarks, or history of Jackson County, the winners essays are reprinted here. Congratulations to the five recipients this year. All of the winners were Seniors at Smoky Mountain High School. Megan Addy Beck, daughter of Berlin and Deborah Middleton of Tuckasegee, participates in Upward Bound, HOSA and the National Honor Society, and has been a volunteer at the Community Table, Department on Aging, and STAR Ranch, a Haywood County refuge for abused animals. She plans to attend Southwestern Community "College, where she will study radiography. She received one of the Scott Foundation Scholarships. c Jackson County Genealogical Society Scholarship Bom in Jackson County, within the city of Tuckasegee, on June Fourth, 1946 was a little boy named Berlin Cecil Middleton. He was bom unto Alda and Cecil Middleton, he had one brother, Bud, and four sisters, Hazel, Annie, Wilma, and Nettiejean. He attended a small school in Tuckasegee, which was hosted in an old, single room church. When it came to further his education, Berlin attempted, he attended Southwestern Community College in aspiration of obtaining an associates degree. Berlin merely attended college to pass the time as there were no jobs in the area, however, he discontinued his studies two weeks before receiving his degree. The reason for his educational halt was due to the simple fact that a job opportunity with a logging company had come up. Berlin then spent his years working, until approximately 1967 when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. During his time in the war, Berlin stepped on a land mine and was severely injured. He was then airlifted to a hospital in Japan, then airlifted a second time to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and finally airlifted again to Fort Benning, Georgia. After this, he returned home having earned two purple hearts, The Army Commendation Medal, and an honorable discharge. Berlin again started working in Jackson County, before eventually heading out West to Washington to work with his brother, Bud. Berlin returned home once again, worked at Trillium, previously known as Signal Ridge, and as caretaker on Cedar Creek. In November of 1993, Berlin married Deborah Alene Hooper. Shortly thereafter, Berlin opened his own business named U.S. Drilling and Blasting which provided business to customers in Western North Carolina, working alongside his wife. In May of 2000,1 was bom and Berlin, my papa, had just finished paying off an extremely expensive piece of heavy machinery, thus Deborah, my mama, retired and began to care for me. I was in their care from the time I was six months old through the present, however, I was not their biological child. I was Deborah's great niece, until she and Papa decided to adopt me around 2004. They also adopted my brother when he came along, six years later. Berlin, through his life, served as a father figure to those who were not his, and as a hardworking citizen and soldier. Berlin died on October 27th, 2017 leaving behind his wife and children, myself, my brother, Justin, and his daughter from his first marriage, Melissa Rice. Taylor Douthit, daughter of Tina Fisher of Cullowhee and John Douthit of Balsam, plays varsity basketball and soccer for SMHS, where she's also a member of the Student Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She volunteers at the Jackson County Recreation Center coaching youth soccer and at the Catman2 Shelter. She plans to attend Western Carolina University and study recreation management. She was, awarded the Robert L. Crawford Scholarship. - O My Papaw's Hands 77 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 I guess I was about 10 years old the first time I noticed my Papaw's hands. They were always rough to touch. Weathered form the elements of working outside, I always knew he was a hardworking man. He had a garden every year that consisted of corn, beans, cabbage and row after row of potatoes. He would plow with the tiller and make long straight rows. By hand he would pick up the rocks in the garden and throw them in the branch. With his hands dirty and rough he cut each seed potato and made sure it had eyes. The first time he told me potatoes had eyes I didn't know what to think. He would say with the best poker face, "Taylor, don't wear a dress in the garden because potatoes have eyes." I was totally confused. It took a few summers before I realized they actually couldn't see up my dress. After placing the potatoes in the fresh row of dirt he would get fertilizer, sometimes it would be store bought little white granules or other times cow manure from a field. I remember collecting the patties as a small child thinking it was some kind of game. They will fly like Frisbee when they are dry but I won't talk about wet ones. As I watched him do these tasks year after year I began to notice we were the only family in the neighborhood who had a garden. Afterwards he would get a hoe and cover the rows with the plowed dirt. Every week from there on out he would weed the rows. Long hours of bending, stooping down and leaning forward to remove those small intruders. The good Lord above would bring the rain we needed to water the crops, cause we didn't need any kind of irrigation system, we had the Lord on our side. After several weeks of tending and monitoring the progress there would be a sign of life popping up out of the ground. A green miracle protruding from the earth. Now the job was to keep the potato bugs from eating our new green vines. Papaw would go through each row and scrape off the bugs from the leaves one at a time. When he wasn't in the garden he was the fix it person in our family. It didn't matter if the car needed the oil changed or the plumbing was backing up. He could fix it. He had an old green toolbox that must have contained all the hand tools one would need to keep everything in working order. He used his hands constantly, mowing, weed eating, trimming trees and carrying the brush for a bonfire in the fall. Hard work is what defined him every single day of his life. And this hard work was always from his hands, day in and day out. From growing up in the mountains I learned that hard work pays off and you can learn to do anything. But perhaps the most important lesson came from his hands. I always shake hands with whomever I meet just so I can feel their hands. If they are soft and untethered maybe they don't know the value of hard work, dedication and knowledge. But if they have rough strong hands maybe they understand the value of these characteristics. I have come to realize through my life not many are blessed with rough hands. I appreciate every day that I spent with my Papaw on that mountain in Jackson county North Carolina and I couldn't be prouder to have rough hands. She has volunteered at Cullowhee Valley School and plans to attend SCC, where she will study cosmetology. She was also awarded a Scott Foundation Scholarship. Genealogy scholarship I have grown up in Tuckaseggee for a large portion of my life. As a kid, my family and I attended Balsam Grove Baptist Church on Caney Fork. This is where I was baptized and saved as a young girl. Balsam Grove Baptist Church is also the church that my Great-Grandpa, Ervin Ensley attended and was a dedicated member of the church. He was oldest surviving deacon of the church and passed away at the age of 98. Ervin worked at the Parker Sawmill at which Ervin's wife, Amanda Parker Ensley's family owned the Parker Sawmill. This is KJ- 78 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 L < C / • c where my Papaw (Blaine Ensley) worked as a young man and started his career as a logger. My Papaw logged until the age of 79 and during the heart of his career, Blaine worked on a huge project. The project was the Bad Creek Dam. The Dam is a hydroelectric dam that creates energy through the spinning of turbines. My Nana's (Bonnie Ensley) parents, David and Elba Coggins were mail carriers on Cullowhee Mountain. During the time that they were mail carriers, they did much more than just carry mail to people. If requested, David would bring groceries to the people who asked. He would also take people to Sylva or Erastus which is near Pine Creek, North Carolina. Elba was basically his assistant helping when she could. Tanner Norman, son of Greg and Natalie Norman of Sylva, played varsity football and was a member of both the indoor and outdoor track teams at SMHS. He is active in Balsam Baptist Church and has participated in volunteer activities through both his church and the SMHS National Honor Society. Norman plans to attend WCU where he will major in marketing. Tanner received the very first William L. Crawford Scholarship. My family has grown up in Sylva, North Carolina their entire lives. My grandpa was bom here as well as my grandpa before him. Sylva and Jackson County has been our home for decades. One of my great grandpas Robert Coleman Blanton has been in Jackson County his entire life, and he has taught me a lot about this place I call home. My great grandpa Robert was bom in a tiny schoolhouse below the Ochre Hill Church on October 9, 1932. He' was born the son of Posey and Julie Blanton from the Ochre Hill area. His parents had converted the school house into a home before he was born. Posey Blanton was 39 years old and his wife Julie was 35. Robert Blanton's sister Emma Lu was bom in the school house as well. The family would move up to a log house before moving to a new home in the area whenever Robert was 17 years old. He had two brothers and two sisters. Life growing up was very hard for the family. Everyone had chores to do and work that needed to be done. His family made a living through subsistence farming. The family had no money to buy groceries or buy food. The only food they had was food that they farmed for or from hunting. The family made .molasses and potatoes to sell for the money they had; they also cut timber and sold bark. Trading hogs, pigs, and other animals also provided money and food that would be needed for survival. The family also owned milk cows to provide milk whenever they needed it. Papaw Robbie would not start school until he was 7 years old. The family made him wait so he and his sister Emma Lou could go to school together. The two of them had to walk half a mile to their school on Blanton's Branch. Their school was very small with one teacher who taught all seven grades. Before school started, however, Robert and the other boys had chores to do in order to have the classroom ready. The boys had to gather fire wood in for the teacher to start the fire and heat up the classroom. The classroom had no electricity, only candles and windows provided lighting. Robert and Emma Lou would pack leftovers from their breakfast for lunch such as ham and jelly biscuits and boiled eggs. Sometimes they would trade with classmates who had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Whenever the school merged to form a new school in the Beta Community, Robert would attend it for his 8th grade year. My Papaw Robbie would graduate from the high school that was located at Mark Watson park. After he graduated, he got a job as a bookkeeper type position working for three dollars a day. He started work at 7 o'clock and would work until the customers would until the customers would leave. In 1952, my Papaw Robbie would join the army. He was drafted but believed he would fail his physical because he was 6 "2 but only weighed 142 pounds; however, he passed the physical with flying colors. Robert attended Fort Jackson for training before being sent to Fort Richardson, located in Alaska. While serving in the military, he attended the University of Alaska. Papaw Robbie became a sergeant level specialist during his two years in the army before he was called to preach. He said, "I felt the call to preach in the 11th grade, but it wasn't until I went to Texas, while serving in the army, that I began to be involved in a church and was called to preach". In the spring of 1956, Papaw Robbie would meet Edith Fisher. They would be married on June 26, 1956 in South Carolina. In total the two have been married for 63 years. The two married in South Carolina because at the time before someone could be married, he or she had to undertake a blood test. However, in South Carolina they would not have to take a blood test and could have the wedding quicker. So the two would go to South Carolina and 79 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 be wed. After their wedding, Robert had trouble finding a job and asked everybody if they had any type of work. He would eventually get a job with the school system in the bus garage making 200 dollars a month. Robert Blanton worked in the bus garage for 35 years before going to the Hub for 11. In all Robert spent 46 years working for the school system. Papaw Robbie also preached for a total of 62 years. 38 of which was at Dicks Memorial. My Papaw Robbie has been around for a very long time and has accomplished a lot in his lifetime. He raised 3 children including my grandma. He and my Grandma Edith had 3 daughters. He also has been a huge part of my mother's life as he and my grandma Edith helped raised my mama while my Nana was at work. Robert has lived his life as a good man and a very hard worker. He is one of the men I look up to because he always lived his life the right way. He has taught me about life through how he lived his life. Her plan is to attend Appalachian State University and become a nurse. She was also awarded a Scott Foundation Scholarship. I am choosing to write my essay on a historical place here in Jackson County, that was called the Webster "Rock School". It is now the home of Southwestern Child Development Commission, Jackson County Family Resource Center, and Webster Early Education and Preschool. I chose this historical building because my mother has worked for Southwestern Child Development for almost 20 years, and for the past 2 years I have worked in the daycare portion of the building, Webster Early Education and Preschool. Also, my grandfather attended Webster School before it was a child care center. The Webster Rock School is a historic school building that was built between the years 1936 to 1938. The school was built by the Federal Works Progress Administration, known as the W.P.A. The building sits on four and half acres of land owned by Mr. A.B. Allison. It is considered to be a native building as it was built from river rock from Savannah creek and the Tuckasegee River with colors of tan and brown. The estimated cost of building the rock school was $40,000. The building was considered one of the best buildings in our part of the state. The floor plan of the building is in the shape of an E. The school housed Webster High School and Webster Elementary School, it featured a cafeteria, auditorium, kitchen and eight classrooms. The location also had space for basketball courts and fields to play in and that drew students from surrounding communities. After World War II, Jackson County began to expand to provide the communities with more consolidated schools. In 1960 the Webster High school moved out of the building to consolidate with Sylva High School to form Sylva Webster High School. The Elementary School stayed just as an elementary school until 1972 when it was consolidated with other schools to form Fairview Elementary. In 1974 the building was acquired by Webster Enterprises from Jackson County Board of Education to become a sheltered workshop. The building was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. V ^ Congratulations to all of the scholarship winners. Beginning at the Old Cashiers School Road, which was known as NC Highway 106 in the 1920's, there is a road intersecting known as Zeb Alley Road in Cashiers, which has preserved its name despite the city-like modernization of our rural mountain roads, receiving 911 emergency house umbers and new road names back in the 1990's. Thank goodness this road name did not get renamed. It has always been known as Zeb Alley Road, except way back about 1922, when a deed called it the "New Cut Road." What the scriber of the deed was referring to was a newly improved road good enough for the growing use of the automobiles to maneuver. Zeb Alley Road ran westerly to Zeb B. Alley|s house which was about two miles out, just on the far western side of the peak of Timber Ridge. Zeb lived there long before the twenties though. He purchased a 100 acre tract in 1894 form Evan F. Pell and Elizabeth Coates Bryson Allison Pell. It was a speculation tract of Pell's, considered on the outskirts of the village. It was originally the Alexander Zachary Grant 1032. Zeb paid the Pells $500.00 for the 00 acres. Zeb's full name was Zebulon Barak Alley. He was bom on 11 Nov 1862 in the Alley home that is still standing, just below the southern cliffs of Whiteside Mountain. His parents were John Heywood Alley, Jr. and Sarah Whiteside Norton. His mother was a daughter of Barak Norton and Mary Polly Nicholson, some of the first settlers in Whiteside Cove. His younger brother was the famed, Felix Eugene Alley, who became the Clerk of Superior Court for Jackson County when he was 25, an Attorney, a State Representative, a Solicitor for the 20* District, a Superior Court Judge, and wrote the ever popular, Kidder Cole Ballad, when he was sixteen. Zeb built his family home on the path he had walked from his childhood days, back and forth from his boyhood home below Whiteside Mountain, to the stores in the village of Cashiers. As his neighbors used the path as a short cut, rather than walk out to the turnpike road now known as NC Highway 107, and then to the village stores. Zeb and his wife, Cora Adeline Davis, who was from Clay County, NC, had one boy by the time he bought the first tract in 1894, Doyle Davis Alley. Four daughters followed, Candice May Alley, Sara Violet Alley, Kathryn "Kiity" Ursula Alley and Margaret Gertrude Alley. While still a home below Whiteside Mountain and before he married Cora, Zeb worked closely with his father, Colonel John H. Alley, in their lumber business called J. H. and Z. B. Alley Lumber Company, sawing lumber, lath and making shingles. Zeb entered and took title to a 213 acre tract, Grant 11671, next to his parents' land, up higher under Whiteside Mountain in 1882 when he was twenty. He later gave it to his father so that he could use it as collateral on several business loans to keep their businesses afloat. Desiring to raise his children closer to the Cashiers Village, Zeb and Cora decided to build their house about halfway between his parents and the shops, churches and better schools cropping up in the village. He reported to the census taker in 1900 that he was a farmer, that he could read and write, and that he was free of any mortgage on his house. Inspired by his brother, Felix's higher education and accomplishments, Zeb thought it was important for his children to receive a better education than he did growing up in Whiteside Cove. In the 1910 censiis, in his Timber Ridge home, they boarded a teacher names Jennie A. Smedley from Ohio. Sometime between 1910 and 1920, Zeb and Cora moved to Welch Street in Waynesville to be near his brother Felix, who was practicing law as a patent attorney. By that time Felix was married and had four children. Zeb and Cora's daughter, Kitty was 18 and had just became a teacher. Their son, Doyle, had graduated from Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School in 1915, and was in law school. In 1926, Zeb's brother, Felix, decided to run in the Democratic primary for a seat n the U.S. Congress against Zebulon Weaver of Buncombe County. Zeb and the rest of the Alley family back in Cashiers and the Democratic voters of Jackson County were full of pride and excitement for their home town boy and rallied for his election. On Saturday, June 6, Zeb and bis son, Doyle, were busy working to voting precinct in Cashiers. They drove all around 85 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 the precincts of Cashiers, Fairfield and Glenville gathering up the election voting returns. Henry Moss was driving his car with Zeb as his passenger, and Doyle was driving his car with Mr. Kaye Bumgarner as his passenger. Around 1 am, both cars left Cashiers to take the returns to Sylva. About 10 miles from Sylva, Doyle tooted his horn and passed Henry and his father. Arriving in Sylva around 2:00, Doyle began to worry as bis father should have been there about thirty minutes after he arrived. They drove back out to see what happened to them and found their car overturned on the side of the road. Zeb was caught under the car. Henry Moss told them a large truck approached them, speeding and brushed up against them causing him to lose control and the car flipped over. Then the trucker raced away, not stopping to help. Henry, bruised but not badly injured, after being thrown from the vehicle, screamed for the driver to stop. Zeb, however died within minutes under the weight of the car. \ J News of the accident reached Felix and he was devastated. His brother was 64. His sister-in-law, Cora was unable to handle the funeral arrangements. The grown daughters had to be notified. The girls, May, Sara and Kitty, had been roommates, boarding and working as stenographers in Washington, D.C. By the time of the accident, May was married to Arthur Dunn and living in Washington, D. C. Sara was married to Noble Smithson and was living in Asheville. Kitty had married Thomas Arthur Charshee and was living in Baltimore, Maryland. Margaret had just married Frank C. Morrison earlier that year and was living in Sylva. Zebulon Barak Alley was buried in the Whiteside Cove Cemetery just up the road from his old home place. The driver of the truck was never found. Felix Alley lost the primary to Zebulon Weaver, and while laden with grief, graciously congratulated Weaver, his fellow Democrat. Son, Doyle went on to become an Attorney practicing in Sylva. He married Edith Purcell and named one of his children, Zebulon Doyle Alley. This grandson of Zeb became an Attorney practicing in Waynesville and was a lobbyist in the state legislature. After Zeb's death, the road to his former home became officially known as Zeb Alley Road, so named be the newly formed NC Highway Department. 'KJ v j - 86 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 o D o n a t i o n o f W W I I S o l d i e r I n f o r m a t i on This article was written by JCGS member, Lynn Hotaling. o - u A couple of weeks before Memorial Day, the Jackson County Genealogical Society received a one-of-a-kind donation - a book that endeavors to provide information on all those from this county who served in the armed forces during World War II. And, in this case "one of a kind" is strictly literal: the volume that Jackie Matthews Allums of Stockbridge, Georgia, brought to the JCGS office is the only copy of the research that's taken her more than 10 years to complete. She titled it "Jackson County North Carolina World War II Heroes." Within its pages, Jackie tries to track down everyone from this county who served. In addition, she compiled a second book that contains photocopies of the draft registration cards local young men filled out during the WWTI years. "Some of them couldn't write their names and had to sign with an 'X,'" she said. "It made me cry sometimes to find the stories of these young men from way back in the mountains who were willing to serve their country." Doing the research and assembling what she found into a book was something Jackie said she felt compelled to do after she saw a small booklet on Jackson County's WWII veterans in the JCGS library. "The little book didn't seem complete," Jackie said. "I thought, 'that's so sad - there have to be more than that,' so I started searching." Jackie began weekly drives from her home south of Atlanta to Western Carolina University's Hunter Library to look at microfilm copies of The Ruralite, which became The Sylva Herald and Ruralite in 1942; The Herald; and The Jackson County Journal, which ceased publication in the 1940s. She sometimes retyped the articles she found, but she didn't write anything else in her book except the introduction. Jackie also did research at the National Archives at Atlanta, located in Morrow, Georgia, near her home in Stockbridge. She made her best effort, but she says she's still not sure she's found everyone from Jackson County who served, because Navy records "are not so good." For Jackie, doing the research and putting it altogether was a labor of love. "I really, really enjoyed doing it, even if I did cry when I saw some of those stories," she said. After all that work, Jackie only made one copy of her research, and then she gave it away. Why? "I got a lot of information, and I knew it wouldn't help anyone else if I kept it," she said. "I thought 'I'm 76 years old'; I need to get that up there." The first section of her book is devoted to the 78 local veterans who gave their lives during the war, and the second contains obituaries of those who served but survived the war and came home to their families. The third part is taken from the pages of the three newspapers that existed in Jackson County during the years 1939 to 1949, listing any notices about service members that appeared. Using the late Walter Middleton as an example, I found a notice that he was missing after the Battle of Corregidor; a notice that he was a Japanese prisoner of war; a notice that his parents had received a card from him; and a brief published on Nov. 7, 1945, announcing that Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Middleton of Tuckasegee had received word that their son, Cpl. Talmadge Walter Middleton, had been liberated, would arrive in San Francisco on the next Sunday and would be home "soon." After his return, Middleton, a survivor of the Bataan Death March wrote several books, including one that described his time as a POW. 87 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 The WWII book marks the second book by Jackie to grace the shelves of the JCGS research library. She completed the first, "Memories From Our Side of the Mountain," in 2007. It has a wealth of genealogical information about her relatives and friends in the Rock Bridge/Wolf Mountain area of Canada community from the 1890s through the 1950s. Jackie was bom there and lived in Canada until her family moved to Georgia when she was around 10. "Memories From Our Side of the Mountain" started as a family history for her children and grandchildren, she said, adding that she collected so much material - including lots of photos borrowed from friends and relatives - that it became a book. She began researching her WWII book after she finished the one on Wolf Mountain. vJ ' \ y KJ- 88 Journeys Through Jackson 2018 Vol 2 c T h i s a n d T h a t O - o This and That is a place to add information, pictures and any other articles of information that come to our attention.
