Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices from other non-profit groups. From the Editor Fall is beginning to come to the mountains again, with cool breezes and the tree leaves changing their leaves. With the chilly mornings, the smell of wood smoke still can be found here in the mountains. The changing leaves are a testament to the beauty of nature all around us. But, soon people will be looking for activities to tide them over through the long winter months. So get out your genealogy and make plans to work on it this winter. There is always the opportunity to learn more or even break through that “brick wall.” The Society library and volunteers are here to help you in any way that they can. The Society continues to grow, but we are still looking for people who would like to volunteer a few hours at the office. It is an opportunity to interact with others interested in genealogy, learn from others and have a great time. You never know what will turn up at the office. Always remember that our Society is as good as its members. If you have any pictures, stories or tidbits of information that you would like to share with everyone, please feel free to send it to the Society for publication in Journeys. REMEMBER We have a new web page, a Facebook page and a new e-mail address. Make sure you take a look. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2016 152 Year End Reports ED: The Treasurer’s Report will be in the nest issue of JTJ, so that it covers the entire year. Below are the reports of some of the officers. President: Tim Osment 2016 has been a wonderful year for the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Mew volunteers have arrived to help staff our office and library. Old pictures, articles and stories have enriched our expanding database. Our programs continue to be regionally recognized for their consistent scholarship and diversity. Our partnerships with other societies, local libraries, media, schools, governments, and churches have enabled us to build upon our reputation as a resource for information and answers. But most important of all, because of our efforts, members of our community, many who never had either the time or the interest to explore their past, have discovered genealogy and all of the rich rewards it offers. Our riches are awarded not in money. Our riches are awarded in knowledge and memories. And, our riches are available for anyone who looks, and they last for generations. Please visit us, in person, via e-mail, or via social media. Please join. We need your involvement. And, please donate. We need your support. Thank you so much, Tim Osment JSGC Board President Treasurer: Teresa Deitz Manring Our 2016 fundraiser, Circle The Rebel One More Time, was a lively, nostalgic and successful event. A Cruise-In was held at the original Rebel site featured classic cars, hotdogs, hamburgers, Rebel T-shirts and cruisers. We raised $2700.00 for the Society’s operating expenses. We will be making the Cruise In an annual fundraising event. Our Society awarded two college scholarships this year. One from the Scott Foundation and one from the Larry Crawford Scholarship fund. A detailed Financial Report will be in the Winter 2017 JTJ, so to include the financial information for the entire year. Librarian: Marie M. Clark The year 2016 has been another busy year for the library. A total of 34 books were added to the JCGS Library this year making a total of 2049 books on our shelves. Our library has continued to grow larger over the ears due to the very generous donations from our supportive community ad members who have dropped items off when they are finished with a book or other related materials/ In an effort to establish some guidelines for what types of materials that JCGS can accept in the library, a donation acquisition policy was developed during the year. This policy was created in part to make sure that the people making the donations were recorded and items focused on local family history/genealogy, Jackson County history, Western North Carolina History, North Carolina history and the surrounding states. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2016 153 A book resale cart was set up to sale any duplicate books and items not related to genealogical research. We encourage you to take a look at the cart during your visits to the JCGS office and please keep the library in mind when you decide to donate your gently used family history related books. Carol M. Bryson, completed Glenville and Cashiers… from the Records, Volumne II The Early History of Glenville, Horse Cove, Fairfield, Sapphire and Toxaway in Western North Carolina, for those of you looking for information about the development o that section of our mountain region. Another JCGS member, Jason Gregory, donated a substantial amount of time working on photo scanning the William Holland Account Ledgers housed at the David M. Rubensein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke University. These ledgers were printed into a 17 volume collection of ledgers from stores with lots of interesting family history connections. Jason is also responsible for searching for and gathering a complete set of The Sylvan that was published by the former Mead Corporation in Sylva. They are also available in binders or the library visitors to enjoy. Fern Parris Hensley, Bill Crawford and others worked for quite a while to gather information about the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Friendship Quilt that was sewn by the ladies in the church in 1916 and put all that wonderful information into a printed book this year as well. We are so blessed to have such a talented community and membership who work to tell and preserve stories all across the county. Several area churches in Jackson County have celebrated milestone 100 year or greater anniversary years in 2016 and the JCGS has copies of the printed histories that the churches have published again from generous donations from the community. Lately, other community church histories from years past have turned up as donations and it feels so good to flip through the pages and see a familiar name or face of someone you recall from past years. So come by JCGS library sometime this coming winter, visit in a warm friendly place, look through the library and enjoy a trip back in time as you look for someone in your family tree. Robinson 8 Notes: Our only knowledge of Margaret Robison was that Margaret had gone west and established a homestead in the Geary area. Cousin Jason Gregory had discovered those Oklahoma records. I had corresponded through Ancestry.com with Deborah Robinson-Platt from Oklahoma regarding similarities in our trees. After DNA test results proved our kinship, we exchanged more information and images. Deborah had planned a trip to visit her Robinson cousin Ann Mitchell from Abbeville, SC. During that November 2016 trip, Ann and Deborah came to Sylva, NC, and I came from Maryland. On Friday, November 4, 2016, Deborah Robinson-Platt, Ann Mitchell, Jason Gregory and I, all descendants of Israel Robison and Rachel Wilson, spent the day touring the homestead site of Israel Jackson Robison in Cashiers and other Jackson County landmarks. Deborah brought with her a large album full of original documents and images of Margaret and Harrison. While visiting the Jackson County Genealogical Society office in Sylva. Jason scanned the contents of what Deb brought. Margaret Robison’s story would not have gone beyond the census records had it not been for Deborah Robinson-Platt. We had a memorable day together and remain grateful for Deb’s contributions detailed below: Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2016 185 The story of Margaret and Harrison Robinson is a portrait of the American Pioneer experience that reflects a sweeping narrative of the struggle, triumph, and intrepid spirit of a family finding their sense of place in the expanding frontier. You will learn their story through documents and pictures accessible through links on this page of Margaret and Harrison. Below is a brief summary of their remarkable story. Margaret Robison was the youngest child of Israel Robison and Rachel Wilson. Rachel applied for a War of 1812 Widows Pension, and provided a family Bible record that was transcribed and certified by the local Sheriff. In that entry, Margaret is listed as Margaret Matilda born 24 Aug 1833. The 1850 Census, Haywood Co., NC indicates Margaret’s age is 17. Margaret and her sister Elizabeth are listed on the 1853 Estate Sale of their father’s personal property as buying two books. The next record of Margaret is her marriage to Harrison Robinson in Jackson Co., NC on 23 Aug 1856. Harrison was the son of Alexander Robinson and Margaret Cline, and appears in the Haywood Co., NC census as Herodatus Robinson age 17. It seems appropriate here to mention that there is a family genealogy posting on the internet at http://thekingsmeadow.net/Robeson-1654-1720.html showing Harrison’s father Alexander and Margaret’s father Israel as sons of an Andrew G. Robinson. Which would make Margaret and Harrison first cousins. It appears that this tree was based loosely on the 1917 publication of Susan Stroud Robeson, and the fact that Andrew G. Robinson was in Haywood Co., NC in 1810 with 11 children. After years of research and communicating with the creator of that tree, we have found no evidence to support the Andrew G. Robinson patriarch theory. The Civil War years were brutal for all of our mountain ancestors but more so for this couple. Harrison would not serve in the Confederacy and chose to leave his mountain home in North Carolina and enlist in the Union Army. He enlisted in the 2nd Tennessee Calvary. In 1865, from Albany, New York he wrote letters to explain his actions. The following is from his hand, dated July 1865: “I live when at home in Haywood County North Carolina. I left there in 1862. The reason for my so doing was that I was a Union man and at that time a Union man would either have to go in the rebel army or lay in the mountains and the latter I preferred. I lay in the mountains near (5) months in which time I suffered more than pen and ink can describe. Besides my wife was put under guard and her property was all confiscated. Since I got in the Union lines which has been two years and six months I have not heard from my family…. I came to Murfreesboro there I enlisted in the 2nd East – Tenn, Calvary.” Harrison is described in Civil War documents as six feet tall with fair complexion and dark hair. Harrison and Margaret are shown on the 1870 Census, Cocke County, Tennessee as farmers with two sons at home. Margaret and Harrison had 5 children but only one survived to adulthood. Before returning from Tennessee, a letter as a statement of character was written by James R. Love and James B. Love, who were both prominent wealthy citizens of Jackson County, NC. In that letter, the Loves stated that: “We have known her all her life until the removal of herself and husband to Tennessee and that we firmly state that she is a woman of good character never having known of or heard of anything whatever derogatory to her character for virtue, charity, honesty, and sobriety and we further state that her husband and family for a great many years were close neighbors only residing a short distance from us. Given under our hands this 19th day of August A. D. 1870.” I assume that Harrison and Margaret needed character references to return to North Carolina after Harrison served with the Union in the War. They did return to Haywood County sometime before the 1880 Census, which has them listed as living in the Iron Duff area with 3 children In 1889 Harrison bought 362 acres of land near Richland and Jonathan Creek area in Haywood County. The following is a summary of hand written notes of Hardy Robinson, grandson of Margaret and Harrison: Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2016 186 “In the Spring of 1892, Harrison and two brothers, Adnirum (Pose) and Mont moved from Haywood County to Canadian County, Oklahoma where they homesteaded. The three were Civil War veterans who came to Oklahoma for land grants. In the summer of that year, Harrison sent for Margaret and his son Israel Alexander. They came by train into El Reno and on to the homestead by wagon. They lived in a dugout until Harrison and I. A. built a two room house with lean-to sides. That fall they prepared what land they could for wheat with a walking plow and two Indian ponies. The local folks learned that I. A. had been a Teacher in North Carolina, and asked him to open a school. He agreed if he could get an Oklahoma teaching certificate. After becoming certified that fall, I. A. opened the first school in the Geary district. For the first term of 6 months, I. A. taught in a dugout built on John McIntire’s farm. He was paid $15 per month and all the firewood he could cut for personal use.” Harrison passed away in 1900, and Margaret issued Power of Attorney to her son Israel A. to sell the lands Harrison owned both in Tennessee and North Carolina. Margaret passed away in 1909. Harrison and Margaret are both buried in the Geary Oklahoma Cemetery. I. A. married Clara Biswell, a former student of his. I. A. and Clara’s daughter, Flora, married her 2nd cousin, Jesse C. Robinson from Cashiers, North Carolina. Jesse was the grandson of Margaret’s brother, Israel Jackson Robison. The story of Flora and Jesse will be written on their own page later. This, then, is a story of triumph and defeat, of loss and redemption, which defines the American experience and this remarkable family. The story continues to be written in the lives of their descendants whose own stories are testament to the Robinson’s vision of a better life. Don’t forget to send in your 2017 dues! For what is the worth of human life unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the record of history.” Cicero _________________________________________ We found this in a stack of papers when doing a much needed weeding of papers collected. Not sure which newspaper published it. 92nd BIRTHDAY IS OBSERVED BY JACKSON WOMAN Mrs. Sarah Wike Hooper Recalls Early Days In Mountains CULLOWHEE Jan. 20 (Special) – One of the most interesting residents of Western North Carolina is Mrs. Sarah Wike Hooper, of Big Ridge, Jackson county, a delightful old lady who celebrated her 92nd birthday anniversary Monday. Although nearly a centenarian, Mrs. Hooper is unusually strong physically; her mind is alert to present-day events; and her memory of the past is excellent. Mrs. Hooper comes of hardy, industrious Dutch stock. Her ancestors were among the early Hollanders who came to America and immediately began to establish small trading posts in Pennsylvania. Finally, when Mrs. Hooper’s great-grandfather, John Wike, a farmer of considerable means, left Pennsylvania with his family and slaves and came o Catawba County, North Carolina. As t(unreadable), a descendant of John Wike settled in East La Porte in Jackson county (but at that time Macon county0, and here Sarah Wike (Hooper) was born in 1844. At the age of 24 she married Henry M. Hooper of Tuckaseigee, at which place the couple lived for a few years and then moved to Big Ridge where Mrs. Hooper has lived for 61 years. Her husband died 38 years ago. The location of the Hooper home is one of the most beautiful in Jackson county. Here one gets a splendid panorama of some of the highest peaks in this section. Toward the southeast the Blue Ridge, Mount Toxaway, and Cold Mountain may be seen; and in a northwest direction there is a full sweep of the Balsams with Black Mountain, Pin Hook, Rough Butte, Bald, and Richland Bald rising to heights of more than 6,000 feet. The Hooper farm is situated in the famous Hamburg cabbage area. This home has long been known for the hospitality of its mistress who takes keen delight in telling of the past, especially of camp meeting days and the trying days of the War Between the States. Two of her brothers – David Wike (father of W. D. Wike, of Cullowhee) and John T. Wike (father of Mrs. Ellen Wike Hopkins, of East La Porte) served throughout the war in the Confederate army. Mrs. Hooper looks back on the old camp meetings as among the happiest events of her long life. Over the roughest of mountain roads she together with other members of her family made the looked-forward-to wagon trips to Shoal Creek (near Whittier) to spend several days listening to the sermons of “Uncle Coley Campbell” (one of the greatest singers of that day). “Uncle Sammy Long” (for whom Long’s Chapel at Junaluska is named), “Uncle Billy Hix” (who had many namesakes throughout this section: Hix Wike, Mrs. Hix Allison Wilson, Hix Ashe and others); Joseph Sensabaugh (grandfather of Mrs. Thomas A. Cox, of Cullowhee), John Bird (grandfather of W. T. Bird, of Cullowhee). Rest is unreadable. While each family always carried a generous supply of cooked provisions, quite often a coop of chickens occupied a prominent place in the wagon for steaming hot chicken and dumplings formed an important feature of the menu at those old Methodist gatherings. This was before the day of stoves and the cooking at the camp ground was done in a pot suspended on a pole held by two forked sticks. The Cherokees usually cam t these services, which were conducted in the “arbor” or great wooden shed without sides; and one of their number who understood the English language stood by the white preacher and translated sentence after sentence from English into Cherokee. “Those were great days,” concluded Mrs. Hooper with a far-away look in her eyes. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2016 189 Mrs. Hooper has a keen sense of humor and has ever looked on the bright side of life. She is fond of singing hymns and ballads. She has sung several rare old ballads to Richard Case who has added these to the collection that he is making for the University of North Carolina. Mrs. Hooper has five children, 29 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren. Her children are: Mrs. Laura Kitchin, of Sylva; Mrs. Alma Fullbright, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mars. Lucretia Bryson, of Big Ridge; Hayes Hooper, of Big Ridge; and Mrs. Bessie Fowler, of Big Ridge. _____________________________________________________________ Excerpts from Jackson County Journal Printed August 1951 – Sylva Herald September 26, 1912 Opening of the Jackson County Fair with the parade of 1500 Confederate veterans and school children.
