From the Editor Recently, I was reading a book in which an elderly lady was talking about “bone memories.” As she was explaining to others in the book; bone memories are the feelings that you get when you go to certain places in your past, or when you talk about people , places or events that happened in the past. Fall time in the mountains is a special time, when people travel “back home” to attend homecomings and decorations in local cemeteries. Decorations are a tradition that is slowly dying out, even here. Each year fewer and fewer people attend the services. But, as I was standing in several different cemeteries this fall, I felt connected to the people who had gone before me. I wondered if they had the same feeling of connection that I was feeling. I felt that in some way, they knew that they were not being forgotten and that someone still recognizes them. Genealogists, I think, have an excellent sense of bone memories. It is what drives us to connect to our ancestors and to preserve that information for future generations. So bone memories or not, remembering our past and our ancestors is an important part of who we are, and who we will be in the future. Remember, that the JCGS library is here to help you with your research, and who knows maybe you will also get the feeling of “bone memories.” REMEMBER DUES FOR 2016 ARE DUE AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR! We hope everyone has taken the time to visit our research library, attend some of our monthly programs, and use the many tools we offer to learn more about your family and our region. Like all non-profits we are mindful of our mission, as well as our responsibility, to balance the services we provide with the resources we have available. Thus, we are asking our membership for both their support and their suggestions. As a JCGS member, please take a minute to drop us a note, send us an e-mail, or give is a call with some of your ideas. Some suggestions we have discussed are: - new ways to attract members and donations - offering a variety of membership levels - increasing our membership dues - asking life members to become annual members - publishing Journeys Through Jackson three times per year instead of four - asking members and community groups to underwrite Journeys - annual fund-raiser ideas and events These are but a few possibilities. Please send your thoughts and ideas to our PO Box, email them to jacksongenealogy@dnet.net, or call them in to 828-631-2646. Thank you for your support! Tim Osment JCGS President Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 98 JCGS Photo Album Here are two pictures that we need help in identifying the people in them. The one above comes to us from Dorothy Luker Henry. She said that she knows that it was taken at a CC Camp and that the man on the left is her uncle Allen Luker., but she doesn’t know who the other men are. The picture to the left is one of many pictures that the society has that is not identified. If you know any of the people pictured please let us know. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 99 JCGS Photo Album The family shown above is one of the Julius Manley Brown. Standing in the back roll are: Victor Brown (26 Feb 1884 -- ); John Talford Brown (10 Jul 1887 – 10 Feb 1914); Ira Brown (9 Feb 1890 – 27 Oct 1968); Effie Brown (Wike) (23 Oct 1897 – 10 Feb 1992); Stella White Brown (20 Apr 1884 – 20 Feb 1958) (married John Boone Brown (16 Feb 1875 – 15 Apr 1950); holding Elizabeth (28 Mar 1908 - ); Florence Brown (Wike) (22 Dec 1892 – 15 Mar 1971). Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 100 JCGS Photo Album The “dough-boys” to the left are listed as left, Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Dillard (1893-1953), and on the right is William Bryan “Will” Dillard (1897-1953). Written on picture is written abt. 1918. The picture below is one of work being done on the East La Porte Church, Lumberton. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 101 JCGS Photo Album Above left is Samuel L. Parker (4 May 1872 – 4 Aug 1962) and his wife, Georgia Ann Brown (7 Jul 1875 – 7 Sep 1928). Also in the picture is Vennie Shuler ( - 1989), who was raised by the Parkers. The picture above right only has one woman identified. The woman on the right is Emma Page Wood (27 Jul 1882 – 28 May 1958). The picture directly above is also missing some names. The woman on the left is identified as Nellie Cook (26 Oct 1897 – 19 May 1968); the woman on the far right is also a picture of Emma Page Wood. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 102 JCGS Photo Album These pictures are two of the many that we do not have identification for. JCGS member Charlie Shuler was able to identify the men in these photos for us. The top is Walter Melton and his father, Samuel Melton. The one below is of Walter Melton. Feel free to stop by the office and look through the photographs to see if you can add names to the pictures that we have. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 103 Jackson County Journal July 27, 1917 Recently, while going through some loose papers in the JCGS office, I came across a Jackson County Journal from July 27, 1917. It was a real treat to look at snapshot of Jackson County at that time. A yearly subscription at that time was $1.00 the year in advance. Making the choice of what to highlight out of it was difficult, but I hope you will like my choices. The paper is in the JCGS office and you are welcome to come and look at a piece of Jackson County history for yourself. We have been advised by the exemption board that it would be much better for all the young men whose names have been drawn to enlist at once and avoid being drafted, because there are very few who will be exempted and it would look much better for Jackson to furnish its full quota without being forced to do so. FROM A JACKSON BOY IN TRAINING CAMP Dear Editor – Have you just a little room in your paper for a word from a Jackson boy in khaki? Since reporting at the Training Camp on May 16th a great many things have happened to thrill and inspire us boys. No one who has not been among soldiers at a critical time knows the patriotic experiences one has. And to mingle with the very flower of North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, who are preparing to be officers in the greatest army our country has ever raised is rich privilege. The men here are working hard and seem to fully appreciate the great responsibility resting on them. Soon we shall separate, some being assigned immediately to camps elsewhere, others being placed upon the reserve list, and some of the less fortunate being sent home. Every one is working for a commission and those who fail will be disappointed and blue. To be among these men is a great opportunity. It puts the soldier feeling into a man, the real “pep”. “The Star Spangled Banner” has a new meaning; a deep meaning of loyalty and devotion to the world wide principles of Democracy. “Dixie”, with its martial strains, fills one to overflowing with a desire to do something Every Southern soldier feels more clearly the flow of the blood that supported the “Boys in Grey,” and carried them to victory in a losing fight. A little more than a half century ago our grandmothers met to say goodbye to their sons; and our mothers, to their sweethearts. The mothers and girls of the present are called upon to do the same. Let them do so cheerfully. Mothers, do not grieve for your soldier boy; girls do not try to detain your lovers. Our country calls and every one who answers has the greatest opportunity of the age. It is impossible for me to give an idea of the thrill of pride that came to me today when I read the account of Captain Dorsey and his men. I had been wondering what the boys of Jackson were doing. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 105 Do not think that I was doubting you, just wondering what you were about. I have had a hard time here to represent Jackson all alone, but it does me good to know you are busy. Keep it up. Boys beat the draft. Get in before it gets you in. There is no event that would give me more pleasure than to be with you on the 28th when the boys leave, but it is impossible. Just remember that there is a boy in khaki at Fort Oglethorpe working hard while you are making merry, with the hope that he may come back to you, ready to take his post in the new army. Let’s hear some more good news from Jackson. I will close by saying Hurrah! for Captain Dorsey and his fellows and Speedwell. J. O. Wood Military Branch, Co. 9, Chattanooga, Tenn. July 23, 1917. Jackson County Journal Dan Tompkins, Editor E. E. Brown, Mgr. Friday, July 27, 1917  Here’s hoping the draft didn’t give anybody cold feet.  The selective draft’s what got my number.  Build that highway through the county while there is yet time.  Rah for the Radio!  Did you feel the draft?  Some of the members of the Radio Company were detected trying to flirt with the girls by wireless, the very first day of the encampment.  The Radio boys will now proceed to learn how to attach the air to the wireless station.  Volunteer Now. All men whose names have been drawn may volunteer for service before they are officially notified of having been drafted, by the examination board. Enlist now before you are conscripted.  Up to Tuesday at 12 o’clock, Sylva and Cullowhee townships had furnished in volunteers, more than half th number that the entire county will be required to furnish on the first call. There were enlisted 26 from Sylva and 19 from Cullowhee, making a total of 45 from the two townships.  The Jackson County Journal is having trouble with its pet child, the farmlife school, since the citizens seek a restraining order against its operation. There are always lots of fellows ready to obstruct the march of progress, but their progress, but their efforts some times get it where Mary wore the beads. – Brevard News  The Jackson County Journal declared that “it is a notorious fact that it is easy to buy liquor in Jackson county as it is to buy candy in a confectionery store.” And it calls upon the law-abiding element to help crush the evil. We deplore such a bad condition with our neighbors. – Brevard News  The county of Jackson, the town of Sylva and the officers and men of the Radio company deserve much credit for having raised a volunteer company in less than a weeks time. The homefolks are proud of the boys and will Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 108 expect great things form the Sylva Radio Company. It is composed of as fine a lot young men as any county affords.  Reluctantly, catching at every straw that offered hope, tenaciously clinging to the ways of peace and good will, the American people have been drawn into this, the most titanic holocoust that has ever engulfed the world. Patiently bearing insults and ever looking upward to the star of Hope, praying for guidance and deliverance, the common people of this nation have crossed over the precipice, grimly, silently the yeomanry of this country, from forest, field and factory, is mobilizing to settle for all time the question of the divine right of kings. Having set themselves to the task of freeing the world of the yoke of tyranny in every guise, they will accomplish that purpose, and woe thrice woe unto those this country who would deny the freeman of America or stand in the way of the rushing tide that will sweep the oppressors of the people forever from the face of the earth. BLANTON DEAD Leonard Graphic “A well known and picturesque character of the early settlement of this section passed away when, at an early hour last Saturday morning, the spirit of Rev. Ben F. Blanton, answered the call that comes from the misty realms beyond and of which we know no other name than death. Deceased was born in South Carolina Sept 24, 1838 and spent a part of his boyhood in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Missouri, moving to Texas in 1856, and with his parents settled near what is now know as Porter’s school house. When quite a young man he professed religion under the ministry of Rev. Burt Cox and Rev. Gatewood, joined the Methodist Church, and became a local preacher of that denomination in 1872. He was married to Sarah L. Boone Dec 3, 1861 and 14 children where born to them, 11 boys and 3 girls survive as follows: Mrs. V. L. Spicer, M. T. Blanton, Randolph; Mrs. J. F. Hall, C. H. Blanton, Leonard; Mrs. W. L. Hall, Bochito, OK; J. E. Blanton, Savoy; I. M. Blanton, Sanger. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. L. Notes for Thomas Jefferson Blanton: Thomas Jefferson Blanton moved to Texas about 1857. He carried the mail on horseback from Bonham to “old Mantua” (now Van Alstyne) Texas. During the gold rush days, Thomas and his brother George Washington Blanton went to California with wagon train. Thomas was a scout. The train went the southern route, and along the way, they ran out of food and had only honey to eat, and in later life, he could not eat a bit of honey. The brothers staked a claim to a gold mine, but no gold. They returned to Texas after the Civil War. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 116 1880 Census, Fannin Co. TX 1900 Census, Fannin Co. Notes for William Jackson Blanton: Gordon Runion, a descendant of William Jackson Blanton, correspond with me during the 1980’s. He was always on the search to find where his Wm Jackson died. He thought he might have left NC with Josiah, and died somewhere on the way, perhaps Missouri. Gordon found a deed in Rutherford Co. courthouse, William J. Blanton & Jeremiah Blanton, witness: B. W. Padgett, John Smith. Filed 22 Mar 1852. He said the 1860 census of Rutherford Co. showed all of Wm Jackson and Denica’s children were with their grandparents Abraham Whitaker & Nancy Smith Whitaker. Later they moved off. Gordon speculates that Elijah, Wm Jackson’s brother, who “went to Texas, but returned” may have brought the orphans of Wm Jackson and Denica back to NC. Osment, wrote this article. He has also given us several others that will be published in future issues of Journeys. William Holland Thomas, state legislator and “white chief” of the Cherokee, was 56 years old when the Civil War began. Thomas convinced Confederate authorities to allow him to raise a regiment of Cherokee and white soldiers to act as a guerilla force for local defense. The regiment of mounted volunteers was known as the 1st Regiment, Thomas Legion, and averaged about 1500 men. The Legion’s unique blend of Cherokee and white mountaineers defended the mountain region from “bushwhackers” and deserters and fought with Jubal Early in the Shenandoah campaign in 1864. In the last months of the War, Thomas returned to North Carolina to recruit an additional Cherokee battalion. The Thomas Legion participated in the last skirmish of the war in North Carolina before surrendering at Waynesville in May 1865. From the beginning of the war, William Holland Thomas openly promoted the idea of North Carolina Cherokee fighting for the Confederacy. In 1862 he entered the army and organized a military unit known as the Thomas Legion, which included Cherokee fiercely loyal to him. These soldiers spent much of the war in Western North Carolina preventing Union forces in eastern Tennessee from entering the Tar Heel State. Thomas’s men remained loyal to him throughout the war and fought until the end. Even so, Thomas was past his middle fifties when he entered the army, and the strain of active military service took a toll on his physical and mental health. Adding to the stress were his responsibilities as leader of the North Carolina Cherokee. The Thomas Legion surrendered at Waynesville on May 9, 185, several weeks after the capitulation of Confederate forces at Appomattox and near Durham. Its men were the last Confederates to surrender in North Carolina. William Holland Thomas went home to his wife, their three children, and those Cherokees who still looked to him as chief. He received a pardon from President Andrew Johnson in 1866 and hoped to reenter politics and business. Thomas’s mental condition continued to deteriorate, however, and he soon found himself hopelessly in debt. Compounding his worries was the responsibility to care for his beloved Cherokee, who faced a devastating smallpox epidemic after the war. In March 1867, Thomas was declared insane and placed in a state institution in Raleigh. From then until the end of his life, Thomas lived in and out of mental hospitals. In 1887 Thomas assisted Smithsonian Institution ethnologist James Mooney when he went to Western North Carolina to gather information on the Cherokee. William Holland Thomas died in the state mental hospital in Morganton, Burke County, on May 10, 1893. He is remembered today in the outdoor drama Unto These Hills, and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian displays the battle flag of The Thomas Legion as part of the Cherokee heritage. The Beginnings and Organization William H. Thomas was a state legislator from Jackson County, NC. At the beginning of the Civil War he was fifty-six years old. For many years, Thomas or “Wil Usdi” as he was known by the Cherokee Indians of western North Carolina, had worked to help the Eastern Band of Cherokees (approximately one thousand Cherokee who had escaped removal during the “Trail of Tears” or Indian removals) to remain in their traditional homeland, the Smoky Mountains. By the fall of 1861, Thomas had convinced the Confederate authorities that it would be worthwhile to enlist Cherokees into the army for local defense. He raised a company which mustered at Qualla Town, NC, on April 9, 1862. Company elections were held and Thomas was elected Captain. Thomas was immediately ordered to take his company to East Tennessee. Upon his arrival in Tennessee, Thomas divided his large company of Cherokees into two companies and designated it the “North Carolina Cherokee Battalion.” Thomas was then made a major. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 140 Thomas petitioned Richmond to authorize the raising of additional “Indians and such whites as I may select.” His purpose was to raise a “full battalion” and ultimately a mounted regiment to act as “a guerilla force… for the defense of the Carolinas, Virginia and East Tennessee” in pro-Unionist East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Jefferson Davis, according to Thomas’ writings had agreed to arm and equip such a unit. By the summer of 1862, Thomas had raised a regiment of five companies; three white and two Cherokee. In addition, he formed a new battalion of two white companies commanded by Captain William C. Walker. The people of this mountainous area were sometimes referred to as “highlanders” and as such, the local citizenry began to refer to Thomas units as the “Highland Rangers.” On September 27th, 1862 Thomas was elected Colonel of a new designated regiment of mounted volunteers known officially as the “1st Regiment, Thomas Legion.” The other officers of the regiment were Lieutenant Colonel James R. Love, a veteran of Seven Pines in Virginia and formerly of the 16th North Carolina Infantry and Major William W. Stringfield a young East Tennessean By this time, the regiment numbered approximately 1,100 men divided into ten companies; eight white and two Cherokee. The other unit of “the Legion”, William C. Walker’s battalion held elections on October 1, 1862 and now comprised seven white companies; three of cavalry and four of infantry in all, approximately seven hundred men. In April of 1863 another company of infantry, one company of “miners and sappers” and a unit of artillery, known as “Levi’s Light Battery” was added to Walker’s battalion. The ten companies of Thomas’ Regiment and Walker’s Battalion, including the additions of April 1863 represent the complete organization referred to by historians as “The Thomas Legion.” The average size of the Legion ran between 1500 and 2000 men during this period, now a sizable little army created form the humble beginnings of one company of Cherokee led by their old “white chief.” The Fighting Begins In September of 182, a contingent of the legion was ordered to Powell’s Valley near the Cumberland Gap. Included were the two Cherokee companies, one of which was commanded by Lieutenant John Astooga Stoga, a full-blooded Cherokee. Asttoga Stoga was revered by his men and was the grandson of a great chief. The regimental historian described him as “a perfect specimen of Indian manhood.” On the march, one of the Cherokee companies was “waylaid and bushwhacked.” Asttoga Stoga bravely led a counterattack driving off the Federal soldiers but was mortally wounded in the process. Incensed by the loss of their young leader the men of his company proceeded to commit an act which gained them great notoriety in the Northern newspapers. They scalped a small number, probably three, wounded or dead Union soldiers in a moment of passionate outrage. Cooler heads quickly rushed to control the incident and as a gesture, the grisly trophies were returned to the Union authorities to be buried with their owners. This behavior was Thomas’ greatest fear. All of his life Thomas had worked for the benefit of the Cherokee and to overcome prejudices and stereotypes by the whites. This affair, though minor as far as numbers are concerned, Thomas knew would rekindle old fears and animosity. Upon their return to camp Thomas ordered the white soldiers not to utter a word regarding this incident and strongly chastised the Cherokee commanders for the behavior of their troops. This tactic seems to have worked, as there are no other reported incidents of this type occurring in Thomas’ command. After this engagement Thomas’ men spent the balance of the year guarding the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad, a vital link between Virginia and the heartland of the Confederacy. In late 1862, Confederate authorities ordered the three cavalry companies of Walker’s Battalion to join tow other Confederate regiments. At about the same time Thomas with his Cherokee were ordered to Madison County, North Carolina to hunt bushwhackers. The balance of Walker’s Battalion were also ordered to special duty rounding up deserters. Upon Thomas’ return from Madison County, he was met with the news that “his Legion” was now a part of Brigadier General Alfred E. Jackson’s command. Thomas had no problem with the reorganization other than the fact that the legion comprised “all” of Jackson’s Brigade. This confusing command structure was headed for trouble and it wasn’t long before Thomas and Jackson were bitter enemies. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 141 The situation ultimately got so bad that Jackson had Thomas arrested in June of 1863, charged with “disobedience of orders.” Thomas was sent to Knoxville, Tennessee for trial but Union General Ambrose E. Burnside’s East Tennessee invasion intervened. Confederate General Simone B. Buckner, commander in Knoxville adeptly handled the situation by assigning Thomas and his Cherokees directly to himself. Burnside’s campaign and Buckner’s action seemed to settle the issue, for the moment. With Burnside in East Tennessee the Legion found itself divided with Thomas’ Cherokees on one side of Burnside’s army and Walker’s Battalion and the balance of the 1st Regiment on the other. With Thomas absent from the regiment, the command devolved to Lieutenant Colonel Love. Buckner withdrew and Jackson with a small brigade retreated to Bristol. Tennessee. Burnside ordered a part of his army up the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad and Jackson’s situation soon became desperate. On September 8th, 1863, Jackson sent Walker’s Battalion with approximately two hundred cavalry of the 1st Regiment under Major Stringfield in the direction of Telford’s Station. There they ran into the 100th Ohio Regiment commanded by a Colonel Hayes. The Union regiment was outnumbered and after a short skirmish withdrew to a “blockhouse” at Limestone Station for protection. After a quick review of the situation, Stringfield attacked the blockhouse. The fighting was heavy and the advancing Confederates met “a shower of Minie balls.” The Federals realizing their situation surrendered. The three hundred and fourteen prisoners were immediately placed in boxcars and sent to Richmond. Shortly after this action, General John S. Williams arrived from Virginia with his cavalry and assumed command. Williams command of approximately 1700 men moved to Blue Springs, Tennessee with Burnside’s army just nine miles away at Bull’s Gap. On October 10th, General James M. Shackleford, commander of Burnside’s cavalry attacked Williams. The fighting continued until 5:00 p.m. when Union infantry support arrived and helped drive off the Confederates. When the Confederates withdrew toward Henderson’s Mill, they discovered a rude surprise, as the 5th Indiana Calvary was positioned directly in their path. Caught between two enemy forces the Southerners realized their only two choices were capitulation or to fight their way out. They chose the latter. Major Stringfield recalls what followed: “Our men realized at once that quick and deadly work must be done or we would all be captured. The entire 600 men (Love’s Regiment) at sunrise dashed forward at the enemy in a heavy skirmish line, Love upon the right and I upon the left, with company officers all in place, all cheering and directing their men.” Their efforts were successful and a few days later General Williams wrote an official letter of thanks to the men of the Thomas Legion that included the following: “Such exhibition of valor and soldierly bearing will receive, as it deserves, the ever lasting remembrance of a grateful Country and ever be an object of pride to their General.” The Confederates retreated to Abingdon, Tennessee. General James Longstreet’s advance from Chattanooga to Knoxville took the pressure off of the Legion and they were able to gain a much needed rest for the balance of the year at Carter’s Station. In the meantime, Thomas and his Cherokees had spent the remainder of 1863 chasing bushwhackers in Western North Carolina. Thomas was not all happy with this situation. He urged the Confederate authorities to return the command to him for its initial purpose of local defense. On April 22nd, 1864 his request was approved in Special Order Number 105 and the Legion was ordered to North Carolina. However, due to Union invasions in the Shenandoah Valley the implementation of the order was delayed six months. In the Shenandoah To help confront the Union advance of Union Major General David Hunter and his 16,000 man army the Thomas Legion, now just 500 strong was brigaded with the 34th, 45th and 60th Virginia regiments under Colonel William H. Browne in Brigadier General Gabriel C. Wharton’s Brigade. The Confederate army commanded by Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2015 142 General William E. Jones met Hunter at Piedmont, Virginia on June 5th. The results were disastrous for the Confederates, Jones was killed and over 1,000 Confederates were taken prisoner. The Confederates fielded fewer than 8,000 men. Confederate Major General Jubal A. Early arrived from the Army of Northern Virginia with his division and took command of the shattered remnants of Jones’ Army. Early rejuvenated the army and began a well-known campaign which retook the Shenandoah and did not stop until it reached the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The Legion participated in all of the battles of the campaign and grew ever smaller due to mounting casualties. Back to North Carolina When the order to return to North Carolina finally arrived, the veterans of the Thomas Legion who marched out of the Shenandoah Valley were fewer than 100 strong. As an explanation to Colonel Love from General Wharton their Division commander on why they were not returned to North Carolina sooner, Wharton stated: “The gallant conduct of your command rendered your efforts to rejoin your command in North Carolina abortive, and the constant refusal to your many applications for transfer is complimentary evidence of the esteem in which you were held, and a grateful acknowledgement of the services you could render.” The Confederate authorities meanwhile had ordered Thomas in North Carolina to raise two additional companies of Cherokees and form an Indian battalion from the four units. Love began to recruit actively upon his return and by April 1, 1865, the Legion reported 1200 men of which 400 were Cherokees. Robert E. Lee would surrender just eight days later a short distance away at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. The Final Days The Tomas Legion’s final moment of glory came on May 9, 1865, one month after Lee’s surrender when Lieutenant R. T. Conley of Company “F” of Love’s regiment, encountered Lieutenant Colonel W. C. Bartlett’s 2nd North Carolina (Federal) Mounted Infantry at Waynesville, NC. That night Bartlett and his men were surrounded in the town by both the Indian Battalion and Love’s Regiment. The Confederates called for a meeting with Bartlett in the morning of May 10th. The Confederates surrendered to Bartlett realizing further fighting was fruitless. Bartlett was apparently impressed by the Confederate leaders and their escort as his terms allowed the Legion to keep their arms and equipment with a promise that he, Bartlett, and his troops, would leave the area. This final encounter is considered “the last shot” of the Civil War in North Carolina.
