Crawford From the Editor We begin our twenty - second year with great anticipation of a new year and the promises and challenges it holds for us. One of the promises...an executive board that is not afraid to WORK for success. We continue to host anyone who is interested in family history with a promise that we will attempt to be of any assistance that we can. One of the challenges... (and when is this not true?) MONEY. We have already tossed around several ideas for fundraising, and if any of you out there know of good ones, send them along. Sanji Talley Watson agreed to serve as a de facto assistant to the editor this year, and her efforts are already apparent. Sanji has a great deal more skill with computers than we do, and she has also been involved in the preparation of this issue. We are grateful for the help. In addition to Sanji's work on the 1880 census and her listing of the Macedonia cemetery, look also in this issue for contributions by Nelma Bryson, Linda Hughes Collins, Nancy Greene Zachmann, Jim Wood, Ruth Shuler, Dorris Beck, Richard Ferrell, Larry Farley, Betty Queen Monteith, Kenneth Nicholson, all of the 2011 officers, and the usual vital statistics. In our obligatory mention of the weather, let's just say that January has certainly been different from last year. No snow, not much cold, plenty of rain. Hmmmni.... Resolve to find that elusive ancestor this year. Resolve to visit us in our spectacular location. Resolve to be a part of this very fine organization. Ann has many distinctions and accomplishments, including the authorship of a book about growing up in Sylva, the organization of her father's materials into a book about his CCC experience, and most recently the collaboration with her husband Frank on a book about his Melton and Kilby families. When Ann accepted her award, she mentioned the special feeling attendant on receiving an award from those people she has always known. The Daniel Washington Deitz Award for service to the Society itself was presented to two recipients. Dottie Brunette, Jackson County Librarian, and Michelle Brown Allison, Office Manager for the Jackson County Library, were our honorees. Both expressed surprise at the honor. [Ed. Both have been extremely helpful to us in our new location.] Our JCGS Patron Award for Benevolent Support of the Society went to four persons representing the Jackson County Friends of the Public Library. John Bunn, Mary Selzer, Jnne Smith, and Betty Screven were named on the plaque for the outstanding, work that led to equipping and furnishing our office at the courthouse. I n Sympathy We offer our sympathy to JCGS members Sam Wiggins, Mack Sutton, Conrad Claybo, and Ella Mae Morris, all of whom have recently lost loved ones. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 C C D a n i e l C o u n t r y m a n W o o d a n d B a r b a r a H e n d e r s o n [Ed. Originally because of our publication of Macon County Cemetery books, we made the acquaintance of a "new" cousin, Jim Wood, who resides in the Nantahala community with his lovely wife Faye. Jim, who has a fine Web site called nantahalanc.com, is a great grandson of Daniel and Barbara Wood. Both Daniel and Barbara were born in what is now Jackson County.] ^ Daniel Countryman Wood and his wife Barbara Henderson Wood Daniel Wood was born 1 May 1824, according to his grave stone at Aquone Cemetery in the Nantahala community of Macon County. His stone was placed there when his remains were moved from the Aquone Cemetery which would be submerged by the power company. [The date of his death inscribed on the stone is 1 May 1892, a date supplied by one of his sons-in-law, and which is in error. Tax receipts of property taxes paid in 1895 and 1899, as well as the 1900 census, reveal that he was still living when the twentieth century started.] Who was D.C. Wood? One idea is that he was one of the younger sons of Henry and Margaret Bryson Wood. Margaret Bryson was one of the daughters of James Holmes and Sarah Countryman Bryson. See Ronald Howell Bryson's book Bryson Families and History to the 1800's (Baltimore: Gateway Press 2002, p. 143). Bryson contends there that Henry and Margaret had a son named Daniel. Another source, Inez Wood Parham, a direct descendant of Daniel, asserted in her loose-leaf book, A Brief History and Progeny of the A. Nelson Wood and Mary Taylor Wood Family (compiled privately), that Daniel was a son of Thomas Wood and Cynthia Bryson Wood. If so, then he was a grandson of Margaret Bryson rather than a son. Because of Daniel's middle name, we believe that he was Margaret's son. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 Who was Barbara Henderson? According to Jackson County Heritage, Volume U, Article #391, she was one of the daughters of Archibald and Jane Plemmons Henderson, and *^y was born 2 Sep 1822. Barbara lived more than one hundred years, dying 19 Mar 1923. She is eulogized in "The Franklin Press" in the issue of 6 Apr 1923. One of Barbara's sisters, Jane Henderson, married Andrew Jackson Wood, who stated in his own autobiography that he was a son of Henry and Margaret Wood. He was, therefore, either a brother or an uncle of Daniel. Following Daniel and B a r b a r a Wood Through the Years In the 1850 census for Cherokee County, North Carolina, Daniel Wood was shown as age 26, "Barbary" was also 26, Nelson was 6, Reuben 4, and Minty M. 2. Ten years later, the family was still in Cherokee County, this time Daniel 36, "Barbary" also 36, Nelson 15, Reuben 13, Minta 12, Sarah 9, Andrew 4, and Mary 2. The family tradition is that during the American Civil War, Daniel C. Wood enlisted in the 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry. [Many Western North Carolina men enlisted in these East Tennessee Union regiments. The reasons for this were as complex as the war itself] Following the war, Daniel registered to vote in Blount County, Tennessee. -3 ' • '"• 'i** •••••-•• w if 8>.jtli!$$i4j!£r^ ri.,bein£aniaI6%liabU»ntW the $t<4<» of •Teniieweffl'of tUo age of tfventy-one years?ir'citi^h" of. tfffc tfn&ni$iSM|fe$;-Mfd a, resident .;_... • -KV- '*5saiit couuty.for saVtoottthsnow ipst-^ast, and i l k $ ^ ^ t 6 ^ ^ ': '• '''-. . The parents were listed as age 47, followed by Nelson 24, Sarah J. 17, Andrew 14, Mary E. 12, Archie J. 8, and Henry 6. Notice that both Reuben and Minta are now gone from the household. In the 1880 census, this family had moved to Nantahala in Macon County, North Carolina. Daniel was shown as age 56, Barbara 57, Andrew 22, and Henry 15. Also in the house is Jas.DHIingham, age 31, with his wife Jane (the daughter of Daniel and Barbara), and the Dillingham children Jackson 7, Daniel 5, and Tallahassa 3. Inez Parham Wood in her book listed some of the descendants of Daniel and Barbara Wood. She herself was a lineal descendant of the oldest son, Amanuel Nelson (1845 - 1924), who married Mary Etta Taylor and had nine children. Minta married Mitchell Hicks and had six children. Reuben married Emiline Hicks and had three children. Sarah Jane Wood, fourth child of Daniel and Barbara, married Jim Dillingham and had four children. Andrew Wood married Dora Wheeler and had eight children. According to Mrs. Parham's research, two children, Jackie and Mary, died young. The Jackie must be the same as the Archie in the 1870 census. The "Archie" was obviously for Barbara's father Archibald Henderson. Henry, the youngest child, married Sarah Anne Dockery and had four children. Our JCGS member Jim Wood is a grandson of Henry and Sarah Anne. Most of the children stayed in the same general area of Western North Carolina and North Georgia except Andrew, who moved to Texas. C Most of the following pictures can be found on Jim Wood's Web site, but he also generously shared them with us for this publication. The first shows a Wood reunion at Henry Wood's home in Nantahala in 1916. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 The second photograph, possibly taken the same day, shows many of mis family. Are those tents in the background? Was the Wood reunion a weeklong - or at least a weekend - occasion? Barbara Henderson Wood, widowed for some fourteen years at this time, is in the front left of this picture, sixth from the extreme left. KJ ^y ^y 10 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 C Finally, we include a picture of an aged Barbara Henderson Wood. Remember that women of her age and time would have considered smiling for the camera to be frivolous and undignified. When Barbara Wood died in 1923, the Franklin Press referred to her as "Macon County's oldest woman." She had lived a very long life and undoubtedly a spirited one. A favorite family story is that she followed a band of Civil War marauders (of which the mountains were full - on both sides - or neither) and demanded her possessions - including a mule - that they had stolen. They complied. In moving into our new office many dreams and ideals have become a reality. It's really hard for me to explain how nice the new office looks, feels, smells, and, of course, sounds, so tell your friends and family to come by and check out this new facility. It is truly state of the art and, I will say, professionally operated. I would like to thank all the people who volunteer their time to keep the office open on a daily basis. This is truly an amazement to me. As this year ends, you need to know that the Society is in reasonably good financial health. We have signed the lease with Jackson County which provides for a "space utilization fee" of $338 monthly, retroactive to June 1. The payment for June through December was made on December 1 and future payments will be made monthly. Programs for the year have been outstanding and well attended. The Vice Presidents' report will give you details. Revisions were made to our constitution and bylaws to bring them into current practice and to provide for one new officer, a computer technician to handle our increased technological ^ ^ capabilities. With this being my last report as President, I am very pleased with the slate of officers that were nominated last month and am confident that these people will do a fine job in the coming year. In closing, I want to thank my fellow officers from the bottom of my heart for their support during the past four years with me as President. This means more to me than you will ever know. This experience is one I will cherish for the rest of my life. Thanks, and yours truly! Vice Presidents B.B. "Bud" Cantrell and Kenneth Nicholson Programs for 2011 are listed in chronological order. January - no meeting because of inclement weather February - Five members - Bill Crawford, Rick Frizzell, Jason Gregory, James Monteith, and R.O. Wilson - showed various old tools used in lumbering, carpentry, and construction. March - "Show and Tell" with various members sharing items thaey had brought April - Bob Plott talked about the Plott Hound, which is the North Carolina State Dog. September - Don Casada talked about a project to locate and document old home sites and ^y descendants of families who lived in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 17 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 October - Lynn Hotaling shared newspaper clippings and a newsreel relating to Rev. Albert Teaster, who was bitten by a rattlesnake and survived. w November - Lyn Lazar discussed the Honor Air Flights for World War II veterans to Washington December - Annual meeting and Installation of officers for 2012 Publications Chairman Larry Crawford The Society published four quarterly issues of our journal, "Journeys Through Jackson," and distributed these at meetings or by mail. The Society published three new books: Macon County NC Cemeteries, Volume I; Macon County NC Cemeteries, Volume H; Jackson County NC Marriages 1901 —1918. Various Society members worked to proof JCGS member Jackie Matthews Allums' World War U book, and that task continues. Ruth Shuler initiated a project to update the Jackson County Cemetery Book, and work is progressing on that endeavor. We finish the 2011 calendar year with 241 members, a slight increase over 2010. We lost JCGS members Neil Baumgartner, Lewis Buchanan, Grace Duckett Greene, Clyde Phillips, Sara Medford Phillips, and Mary Rhinehart Shook in 2011. The Society also participates in 36 courtesy and exchange agreements with various libraries and genealogical societies. We are negotiating two more exchanges at the present. Librarian Dorris Beck The library was in storage for part of the year but has been busy since the Society moved . > into the new facility. Personally I want to express my appreciation to all those who worked diligently to arrange the new library holdings to make them easily accessible as well as attractive. Thanks also go to those who have been present to help people with research. During the year 42 books have been added, making a total of 1,766 in the collection. Computer Coordinator Deanne Gibson Roles Total Website visits during 2011: 54,893 Daily average: 164 Largest number of visits: May and August; least number of visits: November Top search strings: some form of Andrew Jackson, some form of Civil War, and Jackson County genealogy. The Website is accessed by more than 20 foreign countries each month. The Website is being "overhauled" to bring it up to date with technology. JCGS Facebook page has 17 "likes" so far; these are folks who visit and let us know they've been to the site. Anyone can post to this site. Office Manager Ruth Shuler The Society received notification on January 31 that its lease was terminated and space must be vacated within 30 days. Monumental efforts by numerous volunteers (Larry Crawford, Harry and Dollie Bumgarner, Dorris and Sam Beck, Rick Frizzell, David Frizzell, Karen and Ken Nicholson, Bill Crawford, Larry and Marilyn Morton, Jason Gregory, Sanji Watson, Sam Shuler, Bud Cantrell, James Monteith, and Ben Robinson) resulted in complete removal by February 18 to storage space made available by the county commissioners. The move \y 18 Journeys Tlirough Jackson Winter 2012 C into the Courthouse began in late May and culminated in the grand opening of the library complex. Again volunteers performed tirelessly and office operations resumed on June 11. As one measure of the benefits obtained by the move, during the month of July 158 people interested in genealogy visited the office and were assisted by volunteers. Thousands more toured the building and learned of me Society's existence, and many have returned to research family information. The Society has been the recipient of new furniture and equipment supplied by the Friend of the Library, including a new copier, computers, and a microfilm reader/printer. Internet access has been obtained and is available to researchers. Volunteers keep the office open on the same schedule as the public library— a total of 45 hours each week. Grateful appreciation is extended to Karen Nicholson, Kenneth Nicholson, Jason Gregory, Sanji Watson, Bill Crawford, Sam Shuler, Marilyn Morton, Larry Morton, Larry Crawford, Deanne Roles, James Monteith, Dorris Beck, and Kim Shuler for the hours they have spent as volunteers on call. When JCGS member (now President) Ken Nicholson brought this book to the office, we immediately saw the potential for an article for this publication. Written by Darren Shell and his mother Sheryl Shell, the book was published in 2008 by Fideli Publishing. We excerpt certain places here with the permission of Darren Shell.] Ken Nicholson was interested in this area (in Tennessee, north of Cookeville on the Kentucky line) where the Dale Hollow dam is located because this is where his father (Eugene Nicholson, from Jackson County) met his mother (Lucille Hill, from Willow Grove, Tennessee). Mr. Nicholson was employed at the dam construction site at Dale Hollow. Sadly, the Jackson County Nicholson family lost one of their own at this site. Harry Nicholson, an uncle of Ken Nicholson, is listed on page 17 of this book. The book includes a newspaper article written by Ed Cahill describing a dedication ceremony (in 2001) listing the nine persons who died during the dam's construction. It says, "Harry Nicholson, who died when he fell to his death on August 26, 1942." One of the other major reasons for our interest in this book is that we also live in an area that has been affected by dam construction. We have many people who can relate to a history of cemeteries being moved, families being displaced, and lives being altered. Author Darren Shell (sobriquet "The Gravedigger" because of his great interest in the history of the area) gives tours and talks with persons about grave removal at the site of the lake. Grave hole on Kemper Flats, summer 2005 C Above, one of the pictures from the book. It shows in perfect shape the outline of a removed coffin. We are not as likely to see such here because of water depth and lack of clarity. 43 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 \ J Multiple Graves At McClusky Cemetery, 2005 \^> From page 127 of the book comes an original poem by the author. While these families are not from here, the sentiments expressed here could have been written about any displaced site. C l a r k B o t t om C e m e t e ry As I step from boat to shore, And on to age-old graves, I wonder...were you farmers, Housewives, children, slaves? And I wonder, could you have known About this dam they'd build? The dam that covered this land in water, The land your fathers tilled. I wonder if...knowing now... What you didn't know then, Would you change your resting place, This shoreline you're within? V J 44 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 C Would you choose to remove yourselves From this shallow shore? Would you move your age-old rottings From this place you once adored? Would yon remove your contribution From this clay you knew so well? Would you allow some foreign plants To intrude your fertile soil? So, would you move, if you could? If you were given a chance? I, for one, would not displant you From this ground that you've enhanced. Hundreds have swam and walked above Your unknown watery graves. And, most have no idea Of the contribution that you gave. But, in my heart, resides a love That I cannot explain... A tender-hearted understanding Of your hardships and your pain. I think of you, my unknown friends, When o'er your water I go. I think your shore's a wonderful place, And I just thought you should know... That when my number's called, And I ascend above, That I just might be joining you... In this place that you once loved. Bob and Elite Hill; Obey River Bridge Jp40s? Above, Bob Hill, first cousin of Ken Nicholson, pictured on page 262 of the book 45 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2012 \ J The Last Gathering at the Willow Grove Church of Christ The importance and the poignancy of the photograph above should be evident to anyone ever affected by displacement. As the author remarks on page 12, "...this evacuation infuriated many of the river folk that never intended to leave the valley of their birth. Some say it was a time of vast sorrow. Others suggest a time of new and exciting change." We believe that he has captured the real essence of the argument. Whatever one's allegiance, change is inevitable. The picture above is on page 22 of the book. Among the persons pictured are Ken Nicholson's grandparents, Thomas and Mattie Bradley Hill, Ken's aunt Elise Hill (White), and his mother, Lucille Hill (Nicholson). \ J [Ed.
