Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We suppose that spring has come, although some of our days have felt like summer. What a winter! We heard many people saying that all of the snow and the cold reminded them of their younger days. In any case, may Old Man Winter rest in peace until next year. —' We have just the formula for your spring reading. In this issue, see another of the detailed analyses done by Barbara Shelton Smith, and also savor no fewer than three separate submissions from members in Washington state...Bonnie Barker, Ida Trantham, and Janet Wirtz. See also a spotlight on JCGS member R.O. Wilson, and continuations of the Rabun, Georgia marriages and the Hemphill Chronology. Top that off by photographs shared by four other members, and you will see again why the editor's job is so much fun. We participated once again in the indoor yard sale sponsored by the Jackson County Arts Council, and once again, we had a successful day. Speaking of money, make sure to notice the first page of this issue for an update on our challenge grant. You are allowed to scratch for new potatoes on the 20th of June. Wilson of Oroville CA sends along these pictures. Above are Charles David Woodring (1817 - 1901) and his wife Sarah Ann Morgan (1824 - 1904). Accompanying the pictures are some sheets from Ancestry.com, showing this couple as residents of Caney Fork township in 1870 and River Township in 1880, but as residents of Cleveland County, Oklahoma in 1900. The picture below shows their second son, Jacob M. Woodring, who died in 1904 in Hamilton, Skagit County, Washington. ^y 50 Journeys Through Jackson S p r i n g 2010 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m This is what genealogists are supposed to do in February. We found enough consecutive days without snow to visit the Hawkins family cemetery off Walkingstick Road in Horse Cove. One can see your editor hard at work copying inscriptions from stones while Everett Wilson (who took us there) supervises the operation. What one cannot see is that we are standing on top of a mountain with the fog and clouds right amongst us. Cold. Below, two of the graves in the little cemetery. We conclude the Hemphill article begun in the last issue. Notice that the chronology begins with several items that would seem to belong in the last issue. These "new" discoveries were made since we went to press last time.] 28 Sep 1857 Wm. A. Hemphill, Sarah A. Hemphill, Margaret L. Hemphill, and Mary E. Hemphill appear on a "Record of Poor Children," a list of children over eight and under sixteen years of age, Moccasin district. This list was being utilized somehow in the area of public education. Note: The fact that the surviving lists are from 1857 and 1858 are coincidence, considering that this is the time frame of Joseph Patton Hemphill's death. Source: List secured 19 Feb 2010 in Rabun County Library, Clayton GA. 10 Sep 1858 The 1858 Poor List includes all of the names above, plus Rebecca L. and Joseph P. Note: It is also possible that the Margaret L. appearing in this 1858 list is the stepmother and mother, while the 1857 list appears to be the daughter Margaret. This brings up a question about the daughter Margaret. Did she marry? (She would have been about 15 by now.) Did she die? This seems unlikely, since it would surely have been mentioned with the death of James Aaron. 25 May 1864 William Albert Hemphill enlists in Company F of the 30th Battalion of Georgia Cavalry, part of the 11th Cavalry. He enlisted "for the war" in Clayton. Source: Service record, printed from footnote.com 19 Feb 2010 by Ruth Shuler. Record includes a physical description as age 17, gray eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5 feet seven inches, farmer of Rabun County. Note: He was actually already 18. 23 Feb 1865 William Albert Hemphill dies at Camp Chase, Ohio. O . W i l s o n [Ed. Following are only a few of the accomplishments of JCGS member R.O. Wilson. We are impressed with his many talents and achievements.] "R.O. Wilson has been photographed and quoted in newspapers and magazines throughout the United States and in other countries. His picture has appeared on all the major television networks and in USA Today. The people at the Smithsonian Institution know who he is. As for all the publicity, Wilson said, 'I've had all I really want; don't care much about it.' He isn't surprised that so many people think highly of his skills; he just doesn't see himself as unusual.." Nina L. Anderson, Smoky Mountain Neighbors (segment of The Asheville Citizen), issue of Feb. 15/16, 1989, p. 6. R.O. says that he had always worked at Mountain Heritage Day (the Western Carolina University festival held in late September), and then he was recruited by Blanton Owen in 1982 for work at the World's Fair in Knoxville. What started as an agreement to be in Rnoxville for the week of July 18 and the week of Labor Day lasted until the last week of October. He and Peter Gott were engaged in building a log cabin out of hand - hewn logs. R.O. with the finished product above. The cabin was auctioned at the end of the exhibition. Photograph by World Photo of Fort Lauderdale, FL. 77 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 In 1986 RO. was invited to Washington to participate in the Tennessee portion of the American Folk Life Festival at the Smithsonian Institution. He accompanied "Hamper" McBee of Monteagle TN, and the two of them operated a whiskey still from late June until July 4, making a "run" of whiskey every day. ^y ^y Above, the "moonshiners" joking with Tennessee governor Lamar Alexander, who visited the Tennessee delegation in Washington. Photograph from the Tennessee Arts Commission. R.O. then demonstrated the operation of the whiskey still at the Davy Crockett birthplace, along with ballad singer Johnny Ray Hicks. In recent years, R.O. has been at Mountain Heritage Day in Cullowhee demonstrating saw filing with crosscut saws. In 1983 he built a log cabin inside the Heritage Center at WCU, and it was part of the exhibit there for some 25 years before being auctioned to the Sequoyah Museum in Tennessee. [Ed. We carried this news in JTJwhen the cabin was auctioned.] ^J 78 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 79 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 In 1988 RO. was invited to Memphis for the Mid-South Music and Heritage Festival sponsored by the Center for Southern Folklore. Here he operated a whiskey still on Beale Street for three days. Then in 1989, he returned to West Memphis AR where he showed distilling (with a dry still) and also split shingles. JCGS members will recall that on one occasion, R . 0 split shingles for us as our regular monthly program. A logger until age 68, he was shown how to "split boards" by his mother, who had learned the skill by watching her father. It is this talent, rather than the distilling of whiskey, that is more appreciated by persons who really understand the "old" ways of doing things, but the stills always tended to generate more interest among modern folks. u •JVr» - - * "SttVfcl is bx v ^ 5 , " * v ^ 80 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 R a b u n C o u n t y G A M a r r i a g e s 1 9 3 6 - 1 9 3 8 [Ed. When JCGS member Ida Thompson Trantham told us that she was sending along a notebook she had prepared about her brother-in-law Loyall Lee Bryson (who was married to Ida's oldest sister Flora Magdeline Thompson), we did not realize that her notebook would lead to some fascinating genealogical discoveries. Herewith, Ida's work, along with some additional material from other sources.] At Loyall Lee Bryson's death in 2001, his death certificate stated that he was born 15 Nov 1929 to Lawrence Lee Bryson and Mary OIlie Wood. This picture is of Lawrence Lee Bryson (5 Oct 1889 - 14 Dec 1941) and Mary OIlie Wood (11 Dec 1889 - 4 Sep 1953). Mary OIlie Wood's brother was Fred Wood of the Wayehutta community in Jackson County. Lawrence Lee Bryson was one of the sons of Christopher Columbus Bryson and his wife Amanda Jane Stephenson Bryson. Amanda Jane is pictured below. 85 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 In the 1900 and 1910 census records, Christopher Columbus Bryson and his wife Amanda Jane are fonnd in Swain County, in the Hewitt community. In 1910, Amanda Jane reported that she had had nine children with six living, and that she had been married 36 years. Two sons, named George D. (age 11) and Henry L. (age 9) were still at home. Lawrence Lee was already a married man with a family of his own. Swain County delayed birth records of two of his children indicate that Christopher Columbus Bryson was born in White County, Georgia in 1856. By checking the 1860 White County census record, one finds that Columbus Bryson is a 4-year-old child in the household of Mary Bryson, age 60, with a next generation of Eliza, age 39, Jane, age 32, Millie, age 30, Wesley, age 25, and Joseph, age 20. These are presumably Mary's children. Back this family up one more census record, and in 1850 Habersham County, Georgia, one finds Daniel H. Bryson, age 58, born SC, then Mary, age 50, and all of the children shown above plus a daughter, "JB," who is shown as 12 years of age. The above is all substantiated by the death certificate of Christopher C. Bryson below. U This gives us the specific dates of his life, as well as the fact that he was the son of Mary J. Bryson, who would have been the second-oldest daughter shown in the 1850 and 1860 census records. His wife Amanda Jane was native to the Swain County area, as shown by her death certificate, copied on the next page. ^y ^y 86 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 By reading this certificate, one can see that Amanda Jane was the daughter of John Stephenson and Mary Banks. Amanda, Lawrence, and Mary OIlie are buried at Moss Cemetery at Marble in Cherokee County. We are not sure if C.C. is also buried there. The notebook also contains the discharge record (in 1898) of Christopher Columbus Bryson from the United States Army. To extend the genealogy another step or so, we consulted Bryson^J^^^*"^ *J 1800's by Ronald Howell Bryson. (Gateway Press, Baltimore, 2002, p. 166) In it, Ronald Bryson gives the 1850 Habersham Daniel Bryson as a son of Daniel H. Bryson, who was the youngest brother of James Holmes Bryson, progenitor of almost all Jackson County Brysons. The remarkable story here by genealogical circumstance is that Loyall Bryson is buriedin Old Field Cemetery in Sylva (where his wife's people rest) not far from Jackson^County s Daniel Bryson, who would have been named, undoubtedly, for Loyall s 3 greatgrandfather Daniel H. Bryson. Loyall Bryson had relatives in Jackson County much closer fhan his Bryson kin on the Wood side, and Loyall attended high school at Cullowhee in the 1940's. Bryson also served in both the US Navy and the US Army, and the notebook has his discharges from both. 87 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 ^y Another of the sons of Christopher Columbus Bryson was James Mansfield Bryson, above. The picture below, one of many with a military emphasis in the notebook, shows Loyall Lee Bryson third from the left. Many of these pictures are more recent than ones we usually include in JTJ, but we are always glad to spotlight our military men and women. ^y U 88 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2010 S p o t l i g h t o n J a c k s o n C o u n t y M o f f i t ts [Ed.
