Members and non-members arc invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content clarity, or taste. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We begin our twentieth year in JCGS with great anticipation and with much gratitude and appreciation for a group that started in 1991 and whose members have attempted to maintain a consistent f^' standard of excellence since that year. We have not always had a physical place to hang our hats, and we may >—' find ourselves in that same position again, but that will not dampen our enthusiasm and commitment to this pursuit that we consider so vitally important. This issue of your journal recognizes the 2009 Holden and Patron Award winners, and what a splendid group that turned out to be. Also, be sure to notice the Challenge on page 2, for those members who are inclined to contribute. (We certainly encourage this participation, but we also are aware that our economy is not the best right now. Nor do we intend to engage in tasteless soliciting or arm-twisting.) Did you have plenty of collard greens and black-eyed peas for New Year's? Someone most have done just that, for we have been enabled to collect a gracious plenty of materials for this issue. Many thanks to Danny Hooper, Rachel Phillips, Elizabeth Wilson, R.O. Wilson, Garth and Nancy Gooch, J.L. and Carolyn Hemphill, Gwen Howard, Russel Murray, Ruth Shuler, Dorris Beck, the family of Naomi Hooper Green, Jason Gregory, Betty Monteith, Larry Morton, Scott Dixon, and Gene McClure. All have, to greater or lesser degree, been a part of this publication you are reading. May 2010 hold much more genealogy for all of us. O u r 2 0 0 9 H o l d e n A w a r d W i n n e r s: R a c h e l P h i l l i p s , L y n n H o t a l i ng At the JCGS Christmas party in December, we presented the Robert Lee and Drusilla Holden Award, this time to two outstanding Jackson County women. Rachel Brown Phillips, who is' an institution in the town of Sylva, was honored for her inspiration for many genealogical endeavors. Blessed with remarkable memory and attention to detail, Rachel delights us with her stories abont Jackson County persons, especially those who Lived in Sylva. We should also add that many times these stories are hilarious. Rachel was the honored dedicatee of the Arcadia Sylva book, serving as one of its principal contributors. Lynn Hotaling is a familiar name to almost everyone in Jackson County because of her profession: she is the editor of The Sylva Herald, and is the author of the Sylva book, from which she generously donates a portion of the royalties to JCGS. Furthermore, her features in the newspaper, especially one called "The Ruralite Cafe", are frequently focused toward items of genealogical and historical interest. The paper also features old photographs in a feature called "Back Then," or "Then and Now." These pictures never fail to create interest among those persons who appreciate history, and we are pleased to honor the person who makes these things possible for the public to enjoy. RLC Journeys Tltrough Jackson Winter 2010 T h e J C G S P a t r o n A w a r d In October of 2009 we placed before the Society a proposal to honor those persons who had shown outstanding generosity to the organization. Since in 2009 we had been the recipients of several very generous gifts, we felt it appropriate to recognize those persons. The Society passed the motion in November, its stipulations being that the award would be presented to those persons who had given the Society a one-time gift of five hundred dollars or more, or who had donated gifts-in-kind of a measurable like value. We presented the awards at our December annual meeting/Christmas party/awards presentation. Our first Patron Award recipient was Billie Monteith Bryson. Billie presented the Society with a most generous monetary gift in 2009. Billie lives in Webster, and was present at the December meeting. Second, we presented, in absentia, a Patron Award plaque to longtime JCGS member Henry Buchanan. Henry donated a new laptop computer and a noteworthy collection of software. Henry resides in Pembroke, North Carolina. Third, we presented, also in absentia, the Patron Award to JCGS life member Edward Cowan. Edward also made a very generous monetary contribution to the Society. He lives in Mercer Island, Washington. Finally, we were privileged to recognize with the Patron Award the family of Naomi Hooper Green. At Naomi's death, her daughter and son donated her genealogical library to our Society. A genealogist for many years, Naomi lived in Anchorage, Alaska. Her sisters Velma Plemmons and Lois Ensley were present to receive the award. Onr award recipients were given identical plaques to those of the Holden and Deitz Awards, and a perpetual plaque with every honoree's name hangs in the Society office. RLC o KJ C a n W e M e e t T h e C h a l l e n g e? An anonymous donor has challenged the Society with a grant of one thousand dollars, conditional that the Society raise another one thousand dollars, "to assure that JCGS will have the necessary equipment,, materials, supplies and furnishings to open the new office at the renovated courthouse in a manner that will reflect the pride and purpose of the Society." Persons who wish to contribute to this most worthwhile purpose should indicate on the check or in a separate note that the contribution is to be applied to the challenge. We remind all members also that we are a non-profit organization; therefore, gifts over and above regular membership are tax-deductible. r \ yy Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 J C G S P h o t o A l b um \-\J~6K-i. •<-- ^ _^i-,-f~£r^-i,K: \ Notice at the top right of the above photo that someone has inscribed "Manuel Hooper John Melton Aug 20 1907." John Melton was first married to Arlesa Hooper. Below, a formal portrait of Manuel Hooper (7 Sep 1877 - 24 Nov 1928). These photographs are shared with JCGS by new member Danny Hooper, a great - grandson of Manuel Hooper. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 KJ Also from Danny Hooper's photographs, the above picture shows the Henry Plott family of Saunook in Haywood County. Manuel Hooper is second from the right in the back; his wife Selma Plott Hooper is seated to the right in front and is holding a very unhappy little girl, a child who we understand is Eva Hooper Rhinehart, mother of longtime JCGS member Mary Rhinehart Shook. Below, Danny Hooper's maternal grandfather, Baxter Raines. This picture is made in front of an Episcopal church in Balsam. The little girl on the running board is Barbara Arrington Holder. o r Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 J C G S P h o t o A l b um Above, a Tuckasegee-area couple. On the right is Frank Conner, to his left his wife Caroline Cope Conner. Pictures shared with JCGS by Elizabeth Moss Wilson. Below, the Frank Conner family, picture probably taken after Caroline's death in 1907. On the front are Flora, Charlie, Elic, and Joe. On the back are Frank, Cody, Annie, and Vestal. Note that three children (Elizabeth Conner Nicholson, Bessie Conner Moody, and Denise Conner) are not in the photograph. The picture was probably made on Grassy Creek in the location where Thomas Ammons lived. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 J C G S P h o t o A l b um o o Some pictures qualify as real treasures. The above photograph is of ''Mont" Bennett and his son Haynes, busy plowing on Tilley Creek. [See JTJ, Vol. XVI, No. 3 Summer 2006, p. 143, for a discussion of Bennett's marriage and family.] He died 7 Dec 1937 at age 94 and is buried in Hooper-Speedwell Cemetery. A Civil War veteran, he is a great-uncle of JCGS member R.O. Wilson, who submits this picture. R.O. secured a copy of the picture from Chuck Stallings at Speedwell General Store, but believes that the original is in the possession of Vera Holland Guise, who is a lineal descendant of Mont Bennett. r '\y Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 A L i n e o f G u n t e r D e s c e n t George Marion Gunter [Ed. It is always a treat to meet new relatives and friends through the shared interest of genealogy. In October of 2009, we were privileged to meet Garth and Nancy Gooch, who were visiting here from Utah. The three of us conversed for a while at the Society office, then drove down to Dillsboro on a fruitless search for the Reuben Messer Cemetery. We then went to the Gunter Cemetery at Hyatt's Chapel Baptist Church. From there we felt the need to sample the banana pudding at Granny's Kitchen in Cherokee. Next we went to the Gunter Gap Cemetery on the border of Jackson and Swain counties. This is of course the resting place of Nancy's great - great grandfather George Marion Gunter. (The last time we had been there was with JCGS member Dennis Estes, also a George Marion Gunter descendant.) A number of George Marion Gunter's children (four with his first wife Sarah Jane Turpin, and at least one with Eliza Nations) lived at some time in southern Idaho. These families had converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints, and they had moved from Jackson County, at least partly for religious reasons. (In the late nineteenth century, Mormons were not very numerous - and not very welcome - in these mountains. We in JCGS heard an outstanding paper recently, when Mary Ella Engel, an assistant professor of history at Western Carolina University, spoke to us about her doctoral dissertation. Her research had spotlighted the violence surrounding early LDS missionary activity at Brasstown in nearby Cherokee County.) When our Society published our first volume of Jackson County Heritage in 1992, we included as Article #754 Zebulon Vance and Elizabeth Matilda Myers Gunter, submitted by Bertha Capell Lowry. In The Bone Rattler, the quarterly publication of our neighboring society in Swain County, the Winter 1992 issue included a five-page article on this Gunter family, an article full of interesting reminiscences. It had been submitted by Duane Oliver from materials sent to him by Thomas Kryssbek. We are not going to repeat the details found in the above articles, but in our next five pages we will provide the genealogical outline for this family. We will begin with a summary of the George Marion Gunter families, as condensed from family group records submitted by Garth and Nancy Gooch. We will then print the family group records of the Zebulon Vance Gunter family, and we will conclude with some very fine pictures from this family.] Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 George Marion Gunter (13 Mar 1833 - 30 Jul 1914), a son of George E. and Sidney Watson ^J Gunter, married (3 Apr 1857) Sarah Jane Turpin (19 May 1831-25 Dec 1865), a daughter of James Holland Turpin and Nancy Jane Messer Turpin. At the right, as a much younger man. [Ed. We would be very interested in knowing more about the Graham County Gunter family. Some of the given names from these families are identical to ones in the George Marion Gunter family, and obviously some of his own children lived there for a while. And how exactly do these families relate to the Scotts Creek Gunters? Was Joseph E. Gunter a brother of William Gunter, who lived in the Willets area? When William Gunter died in 1851, his will named Mary Pannell, Joseph Gunter, Andrew Williamson Gunter, and Samuel Marion Gunter. Was William married to Rachel Brookshire? And how do the Gunters buried at Addie connect to these families, if at all?] KJ 12 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 J a c k s o n C o u n t y D e a t h C e r t i f i c a t e s o f P e r s o n s B o r n 1 9 0 0 - 1 9 3 0 ; V o l u m e I ( 1 9 1 3 - 1 9 1 5 ) [Ed. Sometimes the details of this pursuit of genealogy lead us on wild goose chases. At other times, we are nearly overwhelmed by the seeming array of coincidence and serendipity that lead us to important genealogical discoveries. The cynical among us would say that all of these things were there all the time...the superstitious would have the opinion that we had all of the stars aligned correctly or that the beads in the windowsill caught the light just right on those days. We choose to fall somewhere between the two. Of course the materials were there all of the time, but the sequence of events that led to this article would have us believe that Providence was somehow involved. Herewith, that sequence:] 01) In our Winter 2008 issue, we published a letter from Joseph Patton Hemphill to his brother-in-law, William R. Crawford. That letter was written in 1857, and it had been preserved through the generations by Crawford descendants, and is still in the possession of JCGS member Jan Crawford. 02) In November of 2009, JCGS member Ruth Shuler and the editor went to Rabun County, Georgia, to work on an article for this publication. Since we knew that the aforementioned letter was written from the Rabun County community of Pine Mountain, and we also knew that Joseph Patton Hemphill's widow lived in that county when the I860 census was taken, we asked the ladies in the Rabun County Probate office for references to the Hemphill surname. Only one was forthcoming, but it was a keeper: Joseph Patton Hemphill's first marriage, with the identity of the bride, which we had never known. 03) We did some work in Macon County in the courthouse and in the library, because the oldest daughter (Sarah A. or Sallie) of Joseph Patton Hemphill's first marriage was showing up in records there. 04) On 16 November 2009, we kept a scheduled doctor's appointment and in the waiting room, made the acquaintance of Gwen Howard of Macon County. He is a great-grandson of Sallie Hemphill, and he invited us to visit and use the documents that have survived in his Howard family. We accepted that invitation on 18 November, and began work on the transcription of those documents. 05) Because William R. Crawford's wife was Olive Hemphill, and because the archaic spelling and pronunciation of that name resulted in "Olif' or "Olief," Ruth experimented with the GenForum postings of the Hemphill surname using that old spelling. A message from a Jesse Hemphill emerged, stating that he had names in an old Bible. That Bible was exactly the document concerning Joseph Patton Hemphill. Unfortunately, the electronic address seemed to be obsolete. Ruth then found the younger Joseph P. Hemphill in DeKalb County, Alabama census records. 06) We called to check about the health of a relative in Rome, Georgia. Her daughter answered the telephone, and when asked if she knew if there were Hemphills in her county in Alabama, she not only said that there were, but provided us with telephone numbers. The first one that we called (J. L. Hemphill) was, of course, the correct one. When we asked if that were where the Bible resided, Mrs. Carolyn Hemphill not only said that it was, but that she would send copies of pages to us. We received those pages two days later. 07) On 3 December 2009, we visited in the Geraldine, Alabama home of Lowell and Carolyn HemphilL Lowell is a great-grandson of the older Joseph Patton Hemphill, and is therefore a third cousin twice removed to the editor. (Lowell's grandfather, the younger Joseph Patton, was an older man when Lowell's father was born, this the disparity in generation numbers.) We could not have been treated with more hospitality and graciousness than in the home of this "new" cousin. 19 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 08) We are now in the process of organizing all of this material into a workable chronology. \y Below, the first segment of our work. Source: 1800 Census for Burke County, North Carolina gives James Hemphill with 2 males under ten years of age. (Note: This birth is an assertion on our part. Not all Hemphill researchers agree with us, but we believe that two of the following probate items support our opinion. A readily apparent problem is that James Hemphill Jr. does not seem to appear in the North Carolina 1810 census. We do not believe he was deceased yet.) 15 Nov 1812 Robert Hemphill marries Mary Queen in Rutherford County NC. If family traditions can be credited at all, we might conclude that she gave specific orders for all three of the above events to be carried out. There is no adequate documentation as yet for her middle name represented by the "V' above. We have seen both "Virginia" and "Varina." In the Queen families, women were sometimes named "Olivine." "Olief Veen"? "Olief Vine"?) 1820 The Federal Census for 1820 for Haywood County, North Carolina, lists Robert Hemphill as head of household with 1 male 16-25 and 1 male 0-9, I female 16-25, 1 female 0-9, and 1 female 45+. Hemphill...and is now in his possession." Source: Haywood County, NC Deed Book B, p. 384. (Note: We have been in possession of a copy of this deed of gift for many years. Only now is it making sense. Robert Hemphill is obviously alive at this time, but we believe that this gift was being made because of Robert Hemphill's illness. We further believe that Ann was the daughter of that name mentioned in James Hemphill Sr.'s will.) 1830 In 1830 Haywood County, NC Census records, "Polly" Hemphill reports 1 male 15-20,1 female 30-40, 1 female 0-5,1 female 5-10, and 1 female 10-15. (Note: We have accounted for all of the listed persons. The other names in proximity suggest that the family lived in the part of Haywood County that later became Jackson County.) 22 Jan 1832 Olif V. Source: William Nulin Hemphill Family Bible, published in Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2008, p. 157. (Notes and Questions: Was he a younger half-brother of Joseph Patton Hemphill? We have not been able to draw any other conclusion, based on the following reasons. We believe that Robert Hemphill died shortly after the gift of the mare to his son. Second, "Polly" Hemphill was the only Hemphill in the Jackson County area in the 1830's. Third, Nulin Hemphill was listed as a fifteen-year-old in the home of Edward Jones in the 1850 Haywood County census, living in the same area of (now) Jackson County as did Polly Hemphill. Fourth, William Nulin Hemphill married Nancy Monteith, a first cousin to Hannah's husband and a niece of Olief s husband. Fifth, direct descendant Elise Delozier Palmer is of the opinion that Mary was William Nulin's mother. We realize that none of these things substantiate his parentage.) 3 Dec 1838 Mary Hemphill receives Land Grant #265 for fifty acres in Haywood County "on the waters of Scotts Creek" and "adjoining lands of Daniel ,- - Bryson and Joseph Allen," a grant she had applied for in 1836. Joseph was 37, not 40; Peggy was 19, not 20; Sarah and Robert are reversed in birth order; Margaret is called Mary. Joseph Patton's birth place is reliable, but we are not sure about the others, because this family lived in the area where North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia converge. Below right, this man had written on the back of the picture that he was holding a hari kari (sic) cloth. The album that holds these old pictures has inscribed on its back inside cover: "Bought 1886 Age 14...Birdie Boulton Durrant Fall City NE" 27 Journeys Tlirough Jackson Winter 2010 &k"-;- -•'•:;; & *$ SKA - -. _ -fSesa*. & ^ V J More treasures. At the top left, possibly the Boulton daughters...at the top right, Birdie with her husband W.E. Durrant, the lineal ancestors of Russel Murray. At the bottom left, a lady dressed in what our female relatives would undoubtedly (and uncharitably) call a "get-up". At the bottom right, this portrait looks rather military in style, and is quite possibly one of the Pennock relatives of this family. The Pennocks lived in Leavenworth, Kansas, where this picture was made. If anyone thinks all of this a little (or a lot) farfetched, consider that Birdie Durrant's mother was a first cousin to Curney Cochran of the Savannah community, and that Birdie and Mrs. Bessie Cabe of Savannah would be second cousins. The following is a collaboration between the editor and JCGS member Jason Gregory, who is a lineal descendant of Henry Bumgarner.] Henry Bumgarner married Phoebe Kilby 3 Dec 1818 in Wilkes County. The bondsman was Daniel Bumgarner, witness was W.W. Martin. (This was possibly the same Daniel Bumgarner whose marriage bond to Sally Kilby was dated 25 Oct 1813.) The first census record that we used is the 1830 Wilkes County, NC, which gives Henry Bumgarner with one male 10-15 and one male 30-40. Females are 3 under 5, 3 5-10, and 1 20- 30. The next pertinent census record is the 1840 Haywood County, NC, which gives males 0-5=1, 5- 10=3,15-20=1, and 40-50=1. Females are 0-5=1, 5-10=2, 10-15=1, 15-20=4, and 40-50=1. The next census record is the 1850 Haywood County, which shows Henry Bumgarner as age 51, born NC, and Pheby, age 50, born NC. Their children are as follows: Susan (age 20), Rachel (age 18), John (age 16), Henry (age 14), Enos (age 13), Rebecca (age 11), and Anthony (age 9). This 1850 census gives 8 children, but if one looks in 1840, the family had possibly 13 children with Anthony not yet born. In addition, one daughter, Sarah, was already married before 1840, so possibly the family consisted of the parents and fifteen children. By 1860, Jackson County had been formed, and H. Bumgarner is shown as age 61, F. as age 60, and children R.(age 26), Jno. (age 24), H. (age 23), E. (age 21), R. (age 19), A. (age 17) and D. (age 4, F). Does this indicate that the 1850 census was taken late? The parents' ages are correct, but the children seem to be off by a couple of years. By 1870, Henry Bumgarner seems to have died, because "Phebe" (age 70) is in the Qualla township in the home of her daughter Rachel, the wife of Dempsey Raby. Phoebe is not in this home in 1880, so presumably she has died also in mis decade. As one reads this account, one will immediately see that some of the daughters in this family are still unknown to us, but we believe that we have ascertained the identities of all of the sons. One Internet source that others will want to use would be the postings of a John Baumgartner, who is a descendant of son John through Lindsey and the latter's wife Emma Calhoun. 33 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 Children of Henry and Phoebe Kilby Bumgarner K^y (We believe we can name eleven of the children and provide some genealogical data. As always, if anyone sees errors, please do not hesitate to point these out.) Sarah Bumgarner (b. abt. 1823) married (17 Sep 1839 Haywood Co.) Joseph Gunter. She is identified in. the marriage record as a daughter of Henry. By the time of the 1850 census, they had children Henry (10), Enos (8), Martha (6), Joseph (5), Parthenia (4), and Almedia (1) and still lived in Haywood County. By the time of the 1870 census, they lived in Old Fort in McDowell County and had children William (27), Phebe (21), Lucinda (20), Sarah J. (15), Rachel (13), Laura (10), Emanuel (9), and Clerisa (6). Another source for this family is a GenForum posting from a Rhonda Gunter in February of 2000. She names children William Henry, Enos, Martha, Joseph, Pjoebe Parthene, Elbert E., Lucinda Almeda, Sarah Jane, Rachel Elvira, Laura R., Emmanuel Jeff, and Clarissa Melvina. She also gave spouses for these children. Haywood County Heritage (Article #487) is another source for a part of this family. Sarah Bumgarner Gunter died after 1880 in McDowell County, according to Rhonda Gunter. The son Enos did not live in McDowell County. He married into the Parris family and lived in Swain County. Nancy A. Bumgarner (possibly a daughter) married James Bartlett Tritt 15 Oct 1844 in Haywood County. They are shown in the Haywood County 1850 census with children William H. (5), Louisa J. (3), and James A. (5 mos.) This family later lived in Cocke County, Tennessee. Ephraim Bumgarner (b. abt. 1825) married (2 Mar 1850) Nancy Blanton. They are shown on the 1850 Haywood County census, but eventually this family lived and died on Indian Creek in Swain County. Their children were Lucinda (1850-1937), George W. (1852-1916), Dollie Tilitha (1855 - 1940), and Allen (b. 1858). The son George lived on Long Branch in Jackson County near his Robinson cousins. Some of this family are buried at the Watkins Cemetery in Bryson City. Also see Journeys Through Jackson March-April 2000. Alley Lodusta Clorinda Bumgarner (30 Apr 1 8 2 6 - 1 Jan 1906) married (3 Dec 1846) Washington Alexander Robinson. They had children Elizabeth Mandy Clementine (1848- 1926), Margaret Lucinda (1850 - 1933), Ephraim Marion (1852 - __), Rachel Caroline (1854- 1924), James Henry (1858- ), Harriett Sophronia (1860-1935), William Jefferson (1861-1952), Martha Clorinda Jane (1864-1924), Joseph Thadeus (1868-1947), Alsadona Cayena (1870-1953). This family lived on Long Branch in Dillsboro, and were well-known for continuing traditional mountain ways. Pictures of this family have appeared in previous issues of our publication. We used as a source for the dates above a booklet entitled The Israel Robinson Family History 1789- 1988) by Robert Robinson, Lt. Cmdr. USN (Ret.). Jason Gregory is a descendant of this family through the daughter Alsadona. Most of these family members are buried in the Robinson Cemetery on Long Branch. This daughter's first name might have been formally Mahala. Susan Lucinda Bumgarner (b. ca. 1830) m. (27 Aug 1851) Joseph J. Robinson in Haywood County, probably in the area that became Jackson County. They had at least four children: Naomi Bethany (ca. 1853-_J, Anthony Columbus (1854-1897), Israel H.S. (1856- ), and John Wesley (1858-1935). In this family, Anthony Columbus is buried at Old Field Cemetery, and John Wesley is buried in the Ashe Cemetery on Fairview Loop Road. We believe that the William Dolphus Robinson (b. 15 Nov 1881) is the same person who was born to I.H. and later married Arizona Shuler. The John Wesley Robinson family was a large one. We believe that the original Robinson land in this county may still be in this family. 34 KJ c Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 Rachel Bumgarner (b. ca. 1832) m. 25 Feb 1865 Dempsey Raby, becoming his second wife. They would have one son, Henry Lee (1867-1939), who is buried in the Hensley Cemetery at Wilmot. Rachel is also probably the mother of the child shown as D. in the 1860 census and as Dorothy in the Raby household in 1870. We believe that this is the same person enumerated in the E.A. Gunter home in the 1880 Swain County census. E.A. Gunter (Enos) would have been her first cousin. John Bumgarner (b. ca. 1834) m. (8 Feb 1863) Clarissa Parker. They had children Lindsey B. (1867-1912), Lee (1869-_), Phidilla (1872-1924), Mary (1872-_J,Tennessee(l 877-1925), Missouri (1879- )Texas (1882- ) and Henry (1884-1952). This family is the subject of Article #123 in Jackson County Heritage, Volume H. Also in this family the researcher encounters a spelling change ("Bumgarner" to the more German "Baumgartner"). Longtime JCGS member Neil Baumgartner is descended in this family, being one of the sons of Phidilla. A number of these family members are buried at Locust Field, and most of this family seemed to stay to Jackson County. Henry Bumgarner (b. ca. 1836) m. (14 Nov 1861) Emeline Farley. While we do not dispute that John Bumgarner's middle name was Henry, (as asserted by the family above), he also had an immediate yoilnger brother named Henry. We believe this man to be the same one who died at Strawberry Plains TN in 1863. (See North Carolina Troops, Thomas's Legion). He and Emeline Farley had one child, a son Cares (1862-1941), who was married to the famous banjo musician Samantha Biddix. Enos S. Bnmgarner (b. ca. 1838) served in Company F of the North Carolina 29* Regiment in the Civil War, but according to published records, after being imprisoned in Kentucky, he joined an Indiana regiment of the United States forces. The Anthony Bumgarner family says that one brother was "never heard from again." We believe, for obvious reasons, that Enos is that man. Rebecca Bumgarner (b. ca. 1839 -1924) became the third wife of James Parker 2 Sep 1873 in Jackson County. She raised her family in the Barkers Creek township. She had children Matthias (1874), Andrew (1877), Ellender (1878), Alice (1880), and Dorothy (1882). She was widowed by the time of the 1880 census, and is buried at Locust Field. Anthony Bumgarner (1842-1919) m. (3 Mar 1872) Charity Parker, a sister to John's wife above, and daughters of Rebecca's husband by an earlier marriage. Anthony's children were Laura Aldelia (1873), Nancy Arzela (1875), James Henry (1877), Garland Lee (1879), Ephraim Wesley (1882), and Thomas Hanable (1884). At the JCGS office, we have a genealogy of the Anthony Bumgarner family written by Lester Bumgarner. It includes information on most of the children of Anthony and Charity, and most importantly, includes a copy of their Bible's family page. One child's name on that page cannot be read, and some of the early genealogy is open to question (as is this, article), but it is an extremely valuable document for those researching this family. Anthony and Charity Parker Bumgarner are buried in Faubin Cemetery, Parrotsville, Tennessee in Cocke County. [Note: To our knowledge, this Henry Bumgarner family was not related to the Charles Bumgarner family of Jackson County. The latter moved here from Lincoln County, while, as we said, the Henry family moved here from Wilkes County. Undoubtedly this has caused a good deal of confusion through the years, but the Charles family is well-documented. We hope that we have done a little to ensure that the Henry family is also documented.] 35 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 / <.. . Some letters exist (without much genealogical value, but some are funny) to Jason Gregory's great-grandfather Charlie Robinson. The more valuable ones are addressed "Dear Cousin" and are written from a descendant of Ephraim Bumgarner. A great deal more work needs to be done on this family, but we believe we have made an honest start. \ y 38 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 S e l e c t e d R a b u n C o u n t y G A M a r r i a g e R e c o r d s . . . Many Jackson County couples, along with their Western North Carolina neighbors, drove to Clayton, Georgia, to be wed. Since we knew that this was certainly a phenomenon of the 1930's (our parents were immediate examples), we drove to Clayton to copy some brides and grooms from our county. JCGS member Ruth Shuler has made it even better, because she also recorded names that we recognize from Macon and Swain counties, with a Haywood County name or two thrown in. The particular residences of the couples arc not part of the recorded books, but instead are part of the marriage applications, and are stored in a different location from the Probate office. (These may be requested on an individual basis.) We have retained the spellings used in the Rabun books. Our potpourri of small (but important) genealogical treasures, discoveries, humor, and nonsense.] C ^ J : ; ' ^ v<J."'- Gene McClure is as much a part of the Erwin High School basketball program as the gym itself. He has been an institution at the school for 42 years. Mr. McClure is being inducted in the Hall of Fame for his work as the official statistician for both boy's and girl's basketball. He also has performed the same duties for football for 38 years, baseball for 23 years and softball for 5 years. Mr. McClure's duties haw included keeping the scorcbook for games, accumulating stats, reporting game scores to the local media and serving as official scorekeeper for tournament games hosted by Envin High School. Mr. McClure won the Erwin Booster Club Award for Service in 1979, and in 1994 he won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association "Unsung Hero" Award. Mr. McClure's former math students at Erwin would not be surprised that he is well respected for the accuracy of his scorebook by officials and visiting teams. He continues to provide the youth of this community with leadership, guidance and friendship. His positive influence has extended to several generations of Erwin athletes, we are all blessed thai he continues as the official statistician for Erwin High School football and basketball. We could not have been more pleased to see the newspaper account of the above induction. We congratulate this multi-faceted member of JCGS, and just like Erwin High School, we proudly claim him as our own. Program submitted by Rachel Brown Phillips. 45 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2010 O n e T h i n g a n d A n o t h e r KJ In the Sunday September 27,2009, issue of'the Asheville Citizen-Times, writer and photographer Steve Dixon devoted the "How We Worship" feature (described by the paper as an "occasional series of profiles of small WNC congregations") to a service held in the Lufty Baptist Church by the congregation of Deitz Memorial. Following are some excerpts from Dixon's article, used with his gracious permission. When you walk up the hill a hundred feet or so to the historic Lufty Baptist Church, near the entrance to Smokemont campground in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you also walk back a hundred years or so. Though the old church was rebuilt in the early 20"1 century, a church has stood here among the trees since well before the Civil War. On a recent Sunday, the congregation of Deitz Memorial Baptist Church, which normally meets in the Jackson County community of East Fork, is having a truly old-fashioned service at Smokemont. When the Rev. Robert Blanton rises to preach, dressed in sparkling clean bib overalls with a white shirt and red tie, his voice crackling with the years of preaching and tromping the mountains, the year could easily be 1909. Blanton's mountain accent has not been purified by the modern world, and his delivery is down-home and firm. Because the service this Sunday is in a simple, old church, Blanton talks about the church as a building, reaching as far back as Solomon's temple, touching on the great cathedrals of Europe and the United States, as well as special places that some may have in their hoes or deep in the woods, where they may meet with God. He arrives at the question he wants to answer: What is the purpose of the church? Since God cannot be contained in a building, and since no man-made structure can do justice to God, for what do we need a church? His answer: Not to raise money and not to force some kind of discipline on the masses, but to reach out to all and enlist them in the cause and to teach all that God commands. Perhaps even more important, he says, the church exists to "console the soul of man. " His real conclusion: "The temple in which God dwells is the humble and reverent heart." [Ed. While this organization does not participate in religious polemics, we can always admire eloquence, especially when it celebrates the simplicity with which our ancestors worshipped.] ^J We received a nice note from Barbara Dills Bishop, who remarked on p. 175 of our last issue: "Mary Ann 'Polly' Wykle was my great grandmother. It would be interesting to find out the outcome of this lawsuit. Hope someone there can print a follow-up." Help, members? More than forty persons attended our Christmas party/annual meeting/awards night in December, and more than thirty were on hand for our January meeting to see "Civil War Letters of Macon County," a DVD that we thoroughly enjoyed. ^J 46 I n d e x f o r JTJ9 V o l u m e X X , N o .
