Because of some unforeseen circumstances, we needed to postpone our annual meeting until January, but we accomplished that too. Not only was she one of our members, but she had generously shared materials for this publication or just for our edification. To say that she was thorough is a vast understatement, and whether all persons agreed with her was never an issue with Naomi. At her funeral service, her sister Lois Hooper Ensley gave a sweet and very moving tribute to Naomi. She had lived in Alaska for many years, but she and Jack are buried here in the cemetery at Addie. Our sympathy goes to their daughter and son, RLC In one issue of The Sylva Herald a few weeks ago, we were also forced to say goodbye to two women who were important members of our Society prior to their contracting illnesses that took them away from our group. Leah Sutton Heinz was a faithful worker on Volume I of our Heritage book, and Mary Cecil Bryson Patterson was recognized for her contributions in our Volume U . We will miss Leah's sense of humor and her remarkable memory, and we will miss Mary Cecil's phone calls, always trying to stay current with Society happenings. May both of these ladies have wonderful reunions in a better place, RLC C Since our last publication, a number of our members have been touched by this sad reality. We offer our sympathy to Bill Crawford, Helen Miller Wood, Linda Miller Duncan, Sanji Talley Watson, Carolyn Deitz Johnson, and Everett Wilson, all of whom have lost family members recently. The following materials are submitted by JCGS members Everett and Elizabeth Wilson. Before the letters begin, a note says this: "Most of the letters are copies of original letters which Bright Burrell, my great grandfather, wrote to his wife, Martha Ann Billingsley, during the Civil War... The majority of these letters are owned by Edward Crawford, who is also a descendant of Bright and Martha Ann Burrell..." This note is signed by Sara Burrell Miller and is dated March, 2000. Besides all of the above, we need to recognize the generosity of Alfrieda Reed Munger and Gerald Hedden, who gave permission for us to use the printed materials, while Shirley and Mozelle Burrell provided the pictures. This Burrell family lived near Highlands, just over the line in Rabun County, Georgia.] [Ed. The first letter was written to Bright Burrell by his brother Butler. We will not alter spelling or usage, but if something is particularly cryptic, we will try to ascertain the writer's intent. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2009 t Camp Watley Culpeper County VA December the 71862 Dear Wife- I take my pen in hand ^ ^ to lete you no that I am well at this time and all the other boys is well but Butler B is not well at this time I think its cold that ales him he was Sick and wee went on a Skout the other day and I think that was what laid him up a gain but he is not dangers bad we Road three days and nites and wee had no fire a tol [Ed. In a January 14, 1863, letter, Burrell tells about 20 men holding off about three thousand Yankees. In a March 14 letter, he is very homesick, and tells his wife be would rather be in Rabun County than any other place in the world. Interestingly, in an April 7 ^ , letter, he names his unit: Company F, 1st South Carolina Cavalry, Holden's Unit. On April 25, he declares to her that he weighs one hundred and Seventy two, and that he is "a heape hevery" ("a heap heavier) than he has ever been in his life. He goes on to say that Butler Burrell "hant got narey horse."] May the 9 Buckenham Countey NC [Ed. We are not sure which battle Burrell was referring to above. There is, however, small doubt concerning the next battle. Talley] is well tel their foulks their with mee I reckon you have herd that butler was kild in the bigefite in pencilvana and non of the boys was not with mee and I cold not do nothing with him I had to leve him a laen on the field [Ed. Samuel P. and Talley had perhaps failed to come back after a furlough. Bright sends them the following message.] If you cant git one come back anyhow for I don't want you to Stay their like Efalaxander and LF Wilson take to the woods like a wild hoge I don't thinke that of you but it is no harm to tel you how to do god advise is no harme So Sam you and Walter comeback I want to see you the worst I ever did in my life before may god bles you both for ever So god by Sam and Walter I hope to See you a gain Bright Burrell to SP Burrell and W taley for ever [Ed. Burrell keeps begging his wife to send him a horse. He also asks in a December letter for some dried apples and some molasses. In January and February of 1864, he writes from Spotsylvania County, Virginia, without much news but praying for peace. By April, he was writing from Roxboro, North Carolina. One line may be either whimsical or poignant, depending on one's point of view:] "...tel all my freins hauday for mee if I hav eney but tel them haudy eny how" ["Tell all my friends howdy for me, if I have any, but tell them howdy anyhow."] 10 KJ Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2009 C [The Regiment has been sent to South Carolina, and some letters are from James Island. He asks for such items as potatoes and onions, and wants them sent by E.V. Nicholson. Also, his friend James Holden had died 15 Oct 1864. The regiment had had a revival, and 54 soldiers had joined the church. His letters continue to be full of affection for his wife and children. He expresses sorrow for the death of William Nicholson.] Charleston SO CA 1864 December the IS Dear Wife I Agane take the opertunity of riten you A short note to let you no that I am well as Comon at this time hopin this may come Safe to your hand and find you well and dowen well I ham got no nuse of in trust [Ed. From Charleston in January of 1865, he then sends a letter from "Jonson" County, North Carolina in March. As readers will know, the war was over soon thereafter.] C u Bright Burrell, author of the Civil War letters above 11 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2009 KJ The picture above is of Bright Burrell, his wife Martha Ann, and their daughter Rhoda. This picture may well have appeared in some other publication, but we don't know exactly whom to credit. On the copy we are using, there is some very small writing at the upper right, and we can make out the words "Mountain Home." [Ed. To conclude, we would refer readers to the Rabun County, Georgia, Heritage Book, where they will find stories about this Burrell family. Also, please realize that the area where Bright Burrell lived is very close to both South Carolina and North Carolina, thus the names we encounter here like Holden, Billingsley, Nicholson, and others that are right at home in the southern part of Jackson County. Bright Burrell is buried in a family cemetery in the Pine Mountain - Warwoman section of Rabun County, very close to Highlands. Also, while we don't appear to have direct descendants of this Bright Burrell in Jackson County, we certainly have descendants of one of his uncles. Those Jackson County descendants include the Burrell family from the Canada Township, and also JCGS members Michael Wood and Bill Foxx. Furthermore, researchers will find it interesting that numerous marriages of the Burrell men were to women with the Denton surname.] V > 12 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2009 C C 1 8 4 0 M a c o n C o u n t y C e n s u s . . . Price ^ Record of A d m i n i s t r a t o rs Questions about Heirs: I t is interesting that only 2 heirs are listed. Arch and Polly Price had at least 12 children. (Mary A. Price reported on the 1900 US Census that she had given birth to 12 children and seven of those children were still living.) There are records that some of these children predeceased their father; no death records could be found for some of these children, and an early death is suspected; but at least one son (John B., the eldest) beyond the 2 sons listed as heirs was still living in 1915. John B. Price's life, death, and family are fairly well documented. Also, some deceased children had surviving spouses and/or children, and it is interesting that none of these heirs were named. • First the named heirs: P. N. Price is Pleasant Napoleon "Pole" Price (1871-1936) who married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hooper C. (1863-1929), d/o William Burke Hooper & Susan Slatton. Together they had 5 children. They are ^"^ buried in Tuckasegee Baptist Cemetery. (US Census 1870; US Census 1880; US Census 1900; US Census 1910; US Census 1920) Albert Price is Albert Clarence Price (1877-1966) who married Minnie Chastain (1877-1966). Together they had 7 children. They are buried in Pisgah Gardens in Brevard, (us census 1880; us Census 1900; US Census 1910; US Census 1920; US Census 1930) • Other children who according to records predeceased their father or from the absence of records could conceivably have predeceased their father: James M. Price (b.1859, d. before 1912), m. Betty Mundy (1859-before 1912), and had one son James Mitchell Price (1881-1952). The marriage record of James and Betty Price's son James Mitchell Price to Essie Buchanan on 27 October 1912 indicates that both his parents were deceased. This 2nd born son predeceased his father A.N. Price as did his wife Betty. However, his only child James Mitchell Price was still living in 1916 when an Administrator for the estate of A. N. Price was appointed and heirs were named. Mary Lavinia Price (b. about 1861, no record found of death or burial) Viney Price, 21, married William A. (Alonzo) Queen on 3 November 1881 at A. N. Price's. In 1920 W. Alonzo Queen, 63, was married to "Hattie, age 49, from TN" with a 6 year old son. This suggests he had remarried around 1912 or 1913 and perhaps Lavinia had died a few years earlier. However, no proof has been found of the date of her death. Nevertheless, at least 4 of 5 children born to Mary Lavinia and William Alonzo Queen were still living in 1916. (Cordelia Raines, d. 1954; Ethel Dowdie still living 1920 census; Benjamin Nelson Queen, d. 1947; Lavinia Lusk, d. 1980) I William H. Price (b. about 1864, no record found of his death or burial) A marriage between ^ ^ William H. Price and Mary E. Watson on 28 September 1882 could possibly be this William Price; however, no further record of the couple was found. 23 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2009 A N. Price Record of Administrators Lulu "Aunt Pop" Price (1867-1909) buried Tuckasegee Baptist Cemetery. This appears to be the same person listed as "S. L. Price" on the 1870 and 1880 US Census. Obviously, there is a record of this daughter predeceasing her father, (gravestone) Alice Price (b. about 1868, no record found of marriage, death, or burial) Alice, age 2, was listed in the home of her father A.N. Price in the 1870 US Census in Caney Fork. She was not listed in the home of A.N. Price in the 1880 or the 1900 US Census. The suggestion is that Alice died sometime before her 12th birthday in 1880. Tabitha L. Price (1866-1893), m. Thomas L. Hooper, and is buried In Tuckasegee Baptist Cemetery. Obviously, there is a record of her predeceasing her father, (gravestone) Tabitha's husband Thomas Hooper died in 1914 according to this gravestone, so he also predeceased his father-in-law. No record was found of any children from this marriage. Joseph Oscar Price (1873-1903), is buried in Tuckasegee Baptist Cemetery. Obviously, there is Kyi a record of Joseph predeceasing his father, (gravestone) A marriage between J. N. Price and Mary Wood on 24 January 1897 could possibly be this J. O. Price; however, no further record of the couple was found. Wylie Elden Price (1875-1903) m. Victoria Slatton, and is buried in Tuckasegee Baptist Cemetery. Obviously, there is a record of Wylie predeceasing his father, (gravestone) Wylie's wife Victoria died in October before Arch Price died in November 1915; however, she had remarried. Nevertheless, their two children were still living. • And then there is the eldest son: John B. Price (1857-1919), m. Mary Stopp/Stapp (1857-1937), and had one child Fidelia Booth Price (1876-1940). John B. (and probably his wife Mary) is buried in Pisgah Gardens in Brevard. (G.B., age 13, in home of father A.N. Price, 1870 Census; in home of father-in-law Jesse Stopp, 1880 Census; HOH Caney Fork 1900; HOH Caney Fork 1910) The death of John B. Price in Transylvania County, NC, on 7 October 1919 is recorded in the NC Death Collection, Ancestry.com. This 191&date is well after his father A.N. This is the editor's own work.] While working on one of the Cockerham - Conley - Bryson lines, Ruth and I continued to encounter the York surname. Since we count York descendants among our friends, we followed a short tangent to learn more about this family. Ruth provided census data and other factual material from her subscription to Ancestry.com. One of our departure points was the death certificate of Cora L. York Moss. She was born 20 Sep 1867 and died 7 Jan 1923. She was married to Matt R. Moss (7 Nov 1865-16 No.v 1939), and they are buried in the Long Cemetery in the Lovesfield community. Her death certificate says that she was born in Grayson County, Virginia, to parents Jesse F. York and Nancy Wall, both of whom were natives of Wilkes County, North Carolina. (These two geographical locations are very close to each other: Grayson borders the state line, and only Alleghany County separates it from Wilkes County, North Carolina. Cora York Moss was the older sister of Betty York Fullbright, paternal great - grandmother of Betty Painter Foti, our JCGS member who is the namesake of the older lady. Betty (Foti) has always known that her York family came from Virginia, stayed in Jackson County for a brief time, then moved on to Georgia. Luckily they stayed here long enough for several of the York children to marry into Jackson County families. The logical first step in our delineation was to use census records for Jesse and Nancy York. Ruth found them in 1860, indeed in Grayson County, Virginia, in the Big Meadows township. Ruth A. 49 49 16 13 12 10 8 5 5 3 iisci 24 11 3 Harmon Young 1 Very important to this discussion is that also in Ashe County in 1880 we find: widowed or divorced We believe the Mary N. shown here is the widow of Herman (or Harmon) York, oldest son of Jesse and Nancy. We can also point out that the Margaret E. above should be shown as age 7 rather than age 11. We suppose the census taker heard it wrong. Sometime over the next few years, the two families shown above moved to the Webster area of Jackson County. Here on 10 Oct 1889, "Corilla" (Cora) married M.R. Moss. John, the 10-year-old in 1880, married Jane Bryson 7 Jun 1891. Elizabeth M. ("Bettie") married A. B. (Asbury Byrd) Fullbright 5 Dec 1889. James Haywood York married Martha Dills 12 Feb 1893. Nancy C. York, apparently the youngest child and evidently called "Callie," (Nancy Caledonia?) married John D. Parks 21 Dec 1892. In this last marriage, Matt Moss, Sanford J. York, and John M. York were all witnesses. In the same time period, Mary N. York (nee Mary Naomi Weaver) married Marcus Weldon Bryson 16 Aug 1890. Remember that she had been married to the oldest brother of all of these Yorks mentioned in the preceding paragraph. Bryson also had a family from his first marriage to Mary Elizabeth Conley. His children included Sterling Tritt Bryson, who married Mary Naomi's oldest daughter Margaret York 12 Jul 1891. The Jane Bryson who married John York was also either his daughter or his niece. The older York family was in the Coosa district of Union County, Georgia, by 1910. They are shown in the census as follows: Jesse F.York July 1831 Nancy A. Sep 1831 Herman nephew Martha niece (We believe we have another census mistake here. She is buried there in the churchyard of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church (called #1 in the Union County Cemetery Book). Her grave stone reads 5 Sep 1831 - 23 Aug 1906. They later lived in Polk \y County, Tennessee. They had fourteen children (twelve named) and are buried in Shady Grove Cemetery between Murphy and Copper Hill. Their stones read: John Martin York 24 Nov 1869 - 31 Mar 1931...Margaret Jane 3 Jan 1 8 7 3 - 3 Feb 1959. Two of their children are buried there also. Of genealogical interest is that they rest only a few rows from her maternal half - aunt, Charity Jane Starnes Stalcup. The Parks family lived in McMinn County, Tennessee in 1910 with 2 of 3 children living. Haywood York lived in Jackson County in 1900 with his wife Martha and three children. Mary Naomi Weaver York and her second husband Marcus Weldon Bryson also had three more children. In 1910, they lived in the Savannah township, and very interestingly, his son-in-law Albert Moss, who had been married to M.W.'s daughter Jennie Bryson (1871 - 1903), was laso in this house with his two young daughters "Roda" and "Ellen." Many persons will recognize that this should be 'Tlodia." She and her sister Sally Ellen were well - known to both the Bryson and York families. Shortly after completing this article through the above paragraph, we read the 15 Jan issue of The Sylva Herald. Because of the renewed interest in the Jackson County courthouse, Editor Lynn Hotaling had revisited a 1995 article by Jacqueline Burgin Painter. The article concerned the courthouse construction foreman, James Haywood York. "Jackie" wrote that the York family moved to Webster about 1888. Haywood and William York were identical twins and were builders of extraordinary talent and skill. There is also a picture of Haywood and his wife, "Ardilla" Dills York. ^ We requested and were granted permission to use the newspaper article as one of our sources. Lynn Hotaling graciously provided the original article and special courthouse supplement to the paper. In a telephone conversation, Jacqueline Painter also gave her permission and said that Haywood York died in McMinn County, Tennessee. Jackie also provided the information that Sanford York died in a railroad accident. To return to the genealogical emphasis here, we checked the Dills resources at the Society office, and we believe that Martha Ardilla Dills York was a daughter of Thomas Henson Dills'. This was a Fisher Creek family descended from Bartlett Dills, Jr. We hoped to find - but were unsuccessful- the parents of Nancy Ann Wall York. Finally, we would mention that the Painter grand - nephews of Haywood York continued the achievements of their forebears. Painter Construction Company was responsible for very fine homes and churches, as well as carpentry detail work, in Jackson County. Those Painter brothers were Clyde (Betty Foti's father), Arthur (Jacqueline Painter's husband), and York, who not only practiced these building arts, but taught them as well. Of the three, York is still living and both his son Terry and Arthur's son Randy continue the work today. This is certainly not a definitive study of the York family, but it does provide a beginning. Buck Creek is a tributary of the Culiasaja River, and this cemetery can be reached by turning onto the Buck Creek Road between Franklin and Highlands, or by turning from the "other end" of the road between Highlands and Cashiers. Raymond of Rome, Georgia, asking about more details of an 1863 incident. According to Mrs. Raymond, William Jones killed Dave Higdon in a fight, and Jones was found not guilty. Can anyone help? Jessica Masters, granddaughter of JCGS Vice - President Nelma Bryson, entertained us at our January meeting with an expanded version of her Smoky Mountain High School Senior Project Her work centered around mountain dialects, and one of the interesting points made was that our language is disappearing. Nelma pointed out that we are bilingual, that we speak standard English in our professional capacities, yet revert to Appalachian speech patterns in everyday usage. Your editor not only wholeheartedly agrees with that assessment, but also often finds himself doing exactly t h at Some of the ideas for fundraising kicked around at an executive committee session and then again at the January meeting were the following: 1) Taking part in the indoor yard sale held at WCU April 4, which the Society voted to do 2) Exploring the "Kissing a Pig" gimmick; 3) Setting up flea market booths 4) Presenting another entertainment evening on the order of our Gary Carden presentation last April 5) Compiling a cookbook of both Heritage and contemporary recipes There were also many, many facetious ideas, some hilarious, some illegal.
