The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We trust that the recent cold snap has not cooled your enthusiasm for genealogy, even if it did kill —> many of the blooms that we were seeing. Folks were talking about sixteen - degree temperatures around __J Easter. Then three weeks later we were setting 90 - degree heat records. Go figure. This time we finish the very fine (and humorous) Nations reminiscence, and we publish another Parker story, along with your editor's feeble attempt at trying to arrive at one small truth through humor. Betty Cope Andrews sends along her work on the Macon County Rush family, and George Ensley delineates the Craten Hall - Polly Dills family. Along with the usual official records and very fine old photographs, see a real treat in the form of some Justice - o f - the - Peace transactions from Qualla. Charles Miller of Waynesville dropped by the office on April 14, carrying with him a color brochure entitled "Rutherford Expedition, 1776." This brochure from the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources includes a map of the Rutherford forays against the Cherokees. The sponsors of the printing are the North Carolina Office of Archives and History and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Charles explained that he has been trying to get this brochure for four years. Charles is attempting to place the brochure, which is based on his research, into historical groups and genealogical societies from Old Fort to Murphy, fie has ambitions that the brochure will lead to recognition as a National Historic Designation, the same as given to the Over Mountain Men Trail from Sycamore Shoals, Tennessee. Charles was eager also to credit State Senator Joe Sam Queen for an extra "push" to get the brochure printed. 49 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2007 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m •J •to 4, "^S '¥J ,4 * *» 3*. ^ > **K ^ Above, William Turner Lewis Sr. and his wife Sarah Louisa Kirkland. Alfred was a son of Josiah A. Galloway and Elizabeth Shelton. In our winter issue, we started this narrative of JCGS member Frankie Jones Nations. We conclude the story in this issue. Remember that we have edited slightly for space considerations.] All of us kids went to school this year; the schoolhouse consisted of two stories and a basement The first floor had two big rooms, one room for the first grade and one for the second Upstairs were also two rooms, but the third and the fourth were in one room and the fifth and sixth were in the other. The restroonts were in the basement. Gladys started in the first, Mildred was in the third and Doyle and I were in the fifth. The fifth grade was quite an experience. We had this teacher named Mr. Lock and there were two things he couldn 't stand to smell: skunk and garlic. Well, being from the south we loved onions, in North Carolina we would eat wild onions called ramps. When we got to Washington the closest thing to ramps was garlic, so Dad bought this garlic and we ate it on our food like onions. Well, Mr. Lock had us memorize ten spelling words per day and we had to go up to his desk and write them on apiece of paper from memory, the fun started He got one whiff of our breath and it was to the bookroom we went In the old school the bookroom was a room where they stored all the books, there were books on shelves around the room with a cabinet below. This is where Doyle and I spent many days from eating garlic One morning Mom had us all dressed for school, Doyle came running in the house and said, "Come see what I have in my trap." All three of us girls went running and we kept asking what is it because it had a real bad odor. By this time it had sprayed all of us. Mom said it was a skunk, we had never seen a skunk before, so you know what it smelled tike. Mom tried to clean us up the best she could and sent us all to school No one would sit by us on the bus. But at school it was even worse. You can imagine what Mr. Lock did when we went into his room. The air turned blue, he said it was bad enough with the garlic but now it's skink. To the bookroom we went, and they opened all the windows. This was the day we made a great discovery. The teacher wouldn't come near us, so he sent our assignments in to us by one of our classmates. As I mentioned before, the bookroom was also the library, so when we got our assignment we would climb up on the counter and find the teacher's copy of that subject Oh yes! You guessed it, the answers were in the back. Guess what kind of grades we got that day? But we were on our own when we didn't eat garlic or run into a skunk. This went on all year. Mr. Lock was the teacher for the sixth grade and we stayed in the same room. I am sure we spent many .more days in that bookroom, as we never stopped our habit of eating garlic. Mom never knew of this scheme of ours or she would have put a stop to it I never told anyone until about fifty years later. I was discussing it with Imajean Buchanan, who was a classmate. She felt sorry for Doyle and me; she thought the teacher was mean to us until she found out we discovered the answers in the back of the teachers' book. The year was 1944. We finally got out of Mr. Lock's room and we graduated to the high school building. We were in the seventh grade. This was the year that the kids came to the Darrington school from Whitehorse. Guess we had lived a sheltered life or maybe it was just me. Those kids from Whitehorse, especially the boys, could get into more trouble, our eating garlic and staying in the bookroom was mild to what they would get into. Where thay had to go was worse. They had to go to the Supervisor's Office. This was the days when they didn 7 spare the rod You could hear Mr. Crown giving licks clear down the hall 55 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2007 This was also the year that all the boys fell for the teacher, Doyle included She was a very pretty lady and her name was Miss Hahn. This was also the year we got to play in the gym. The gym was so big after the small basement in the grade school building. When it rained we could play basketball in the gym, but when it was nice we played outside during PE class. This was the best part of school for me because I loved sports. KJ The band room was where we practiced playing, and we used the ball field for marching. We participated in all the parades in the town during any celebrations. We would put on our uniforms and away we would go. Guess who was our conductor? Yep, it was Mr. Lock, but I played bass drum so I didn't have to get close to him. I was probably still eating garlic It was fun playing in the band We would also go to other towns and march in their parades. KJ The school band room, with Whitehorse Mountain in the background KJ 56 c c Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2007 The year was 1946. This was the year that Troy Nations (Mom's brother), his wife Juanita and two children, Peggy and Charles, came to Darrington. We were so shoppy to see them and they were glad to stop traveling. They first lived in a small house in the city limits. This was also the year that Mom's Dad died He had been sick for a while. This was the first time we had heard the word "cancer." His name was France Burton. He was born February 1" 1888 and died October 20* 1946. Mom and Gladys went by train to North Carolina when they heard he was sick and they stayed until after the funeral Dad had quite a time while Mom was gone, taking care of us kids and working in the woods. I tried to do the cooking, but no one could step into Mom's shoes. Dad would tell that he would throw my biscuits out to the dogs and they wouldn't even eat them they were so hard We were very happy when Mom came home. This was also the year that a handsome guy came into my life. He was in Darrington on leave from the Navy. This was the first time I met Regal Nations. The year was 1947. Many things happened this year. We bought our second house, a house built by Ike Green, located approximately one half mile north from the old house. Troy and his family bought our old house and we had a great time moving, moving our things out and Troy and his family were moving their things in. The first thing that got going in our new house was the cook stove, and Mom went to work. This house was bigger than the old one. It had three bedrooms downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. We had never lived in a house with stairs. Dad died in this house May 11,1959. JCGS member Dan Johnson writes that he got inspired by the wonderful article on John Parker, and so he is submitting the following in the hope that more Parker research can be documented. Please also see the editor's attempt at clarity on p. 88. Dan sends the article, but he has also submitted a descendancy chart for Billy Parker. We will publish this in its first two generations in this issue, then complete it next time.] Billy Parker was the firstborn son of John A. Parker, and his second wife, Nancy Phillips.1 John married Nancy on 18 November 18442 in (what was then, still) Haywood county. Billy followed less than 3 months later being bom on 18 February 1845* in Caney Fork. Although Billy was the firstborn in his family, it is likely that he didn't enjoy the typical privileges of a firstborn, given that there were at least five of his eight older half brothers and sisters growing up with him4: * Jane Parker, b. 1824 •Lavinia Parker, b. 1827 •Pleasant Parker, b. 18295 •Q.A. Parker, b. 1829 *John P. Parker, b. 1831 •Mary Parker, b. 1835 •Jefferson Davis Parker, b. 1837 •Elizabeth Tabitha Parker, b. 1840 When the 'Great War of Northern Aggression' exploded officially on April 12, 1861, Billy was 16 years old. However, when the recruiters came around in August of that same year, he had become an 18 year old, thus qualifying for service.6 This strong desire to defend his homeland is thus evidenced in having changed his age, in order to join the Confederate forces. He was mustered into Company F, of the 29th NC Infantry unit on August 31, 18617, made up of young men from Buncombe, Cherokee, Haywood, Jackson, Mitchell, and Yancey counties. His years of service were quite eventful. On October 10th, 1864 in the Battle of Allatoona, (Bartow county, Georgia) an especially bloody battle where almost half of both Federal and Confederate forces died8, Billy was wounded.9 1 Journeys through Jackson, Vol XVII, No. I, Winter 2007, pgs. 27-34 2"Neath Western's Sod," compiled by Howard R. Symours Jr., p 68. 'Tombstone, Lower Coward cemetery, Caney Fork, Jackson county, NC. It should come as no surprise that Nancy was obviously pregnant (6 months) with Billy when they married. This author has come across the same circumstance several times in Caney Fork, where the law was far away, and traditional moral values were easily compromised. In fact, it has been assumed that John A. Parker's first wife died, but there has been no record found neither of her name, nor of her death date. Had she died, one questions why John waited so long to marry Nancy, especially considering that he was a widower with 8 children to feed? The likely answer is that Nancy, (she and her family apparently from SC) and having moved to Caney Fork ca. , moved in with John to help with the children, became pregnant, and they simply put off marriage until a convenient time. 41850 Haywood county, NC census: household 807; those who appear on this census are: P.M. Parker, 20, Q.A. Parker, 20, John Parker, 19, Mary Parker, 16, Elizabeth Parker, 10. Jane and Lavinia both had apparently already married when the census was taken, and Jefferson Davis is assumed to have died. 5lt appears that Pleasant and Q.A. (or 'Hugh': this writer theorizes that Q.A. and Hugh were the same person) were twins. It has been theorized but never documented, that John A. Parker's mother was Elizabeth Pleasant. Given the typical naming customs of this day, the existence of 'Pleasant Parker' lends credibility to this theory ""NC Troops 1861-65, A Roster, vol VIII" ''ibid lwww. cr. nps.gov/hps/abpp/battles/ga023. htm 9"NC Troops 1861-65, A Roster, vol Vlir The battle resulted in a Federal victory: Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2007 "Maj. Gen. Samuel G. French's Confederate division arrived near Allatoona at sunrise on the 5th. After demanding a surrender and receiving a negative reply, French attacked. The Union outer line , survived a sustained two and a half hour attack, but then fell back and regrouped in an earthen ^-J "Star" fort of Allatoona Pass. French repeatedly attacked, but the fort held. The Rebels began to run out of ammunition, and reports of arriving Union reinforcements Influenced them to move off and rejoin Hood's force.010 He was able to nurse his wounds, and recover to the point of continuing to serve. On December 15- 16th, the Battle of Nashville was fought, and ended as well with a Federal victory. General George Thomas summarizes some of the Confederate losses: "During the two days' operations there were 4,462 prisoners captured, including 287 officers of all grades from that of major-general, 53 pieces of artillery, and thousands of small-arms. The enemy abandoned on the field all his dead and wounded "x1 Billy was one of those prisoners captured and hospitalized, having been wounded again in the fighting.12 He was also promoted to sergeant, apparently during the battle.13 After about 6 weeks of recovery, he was transferred to the POW camp in Louisville, KY on January 27th, 1865. On February 3rd of this same year, he was again transferred, this time to Camp Chase POW camp in Columbus, OH.14 There he was to wait out the remaining four months of the war until his oath of allegiance on June 13th, 186515: "As the war wore on, conditions (in Camp Chase) became worse. Shoddy barracks, low muddy ground, open latrines, aboveground open cisterns, and a brief smallpox outbreak excited U.S. Sanitary Commission agents who were already demanding reform Original facilities for 3,500-4,000 men were jammed with close to 7,000...crowding and health conditions were never resolved As many s 10,000 prisoners were reputedly confined there by the time of the Confederate surrender. "16 When the war was over, as so many others, Billy returned home a broken man, suffering from wounds that would afflict him for the rest o f his life. His first petition for a pension was submitted on 1911; however it was rejected and he was forced to resubmit it a year later in July of 1912: SOLDIER'S APPLICATION FOR PENSION State ofNC co. of Jackson, On this 1st day of July A.D. 1912, personally appeared before me, C.S.C. in and for the state and co. aforesaid W.J. According to Zinnie Hooper Willis20, Billy Parker was half Cherokee. An oft-repeated story among many western North Carolina families is that of a Cherokee grandmother; many of these rumors likely being true. However proving and documenting this fact for many is unlikely. If Billy Parker were indeed half Cherokee, that would likely mean that either his father, John A. Parker, or his mother, Nancy Phillips, was a full-blood. To date, there is no documentation to prove this for either one of them. Were Billy one quarter Cherokee, (a more likely possibility) that would mean one of his grandparents was full-blood. Were that the case, the only possibilities are the following: William Parker Sr. Elizabeth (Pleasant?) Daniel Phillips Ruth/a (Farris/ies?) Daniel and Ruth Phillips migrated from SC at some point before 1830.21 It is thought that they came from 96 District, which included the present day counties of Oconee and Pickens, and which were in fact, part of Cherokee territory. There are family ties in this area to this day, stretching from about two centuries ago. However to date, this author has not encountered the typical 'Cherokee rumor' stories among descendents that could be attributed to this couple. It is interesting to note the time frame though: they moved directly to Caney Fork, which was somewhat of a refuge for those trying to avoid the Indian Removal Act, and the resulting Trail of Tears march in 1838.22 William Parker and his wife Elizabeth seem more likely candidates; Elizabeth's elusive identity seems to lend more credibility to her being the Cherokee of which some of her descendents speak. Another possibility is that two or more of Billy's grandparents were part Cherokee, adding up to him being half. For example if each of his grandparents were V*, that would add up to Billy being 54. But, this is an area of ongoing research, and hopefully at some point in the future Parker researchers will be able to uncover some documentation. Billy Parker lived his last years as a widower in Qualla, Jackson county.23 Jane having died in 1894.24 He is said to have been a basket weaver25. Being right on the border of the reservation, these interesting notes also add to the intrigue of a possible Cherokee connection. His health was probably never very good, and it can be attested by a report in the Jackson County Journal: "Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cook went to Soco last week to see Mrs. Cook's father, who is seriously ill.,a& This visit could possibly have been Alice's last time to see her father. Billy's oldest daughter, Samantha Wood, and her family had already moved to Washington state by this time27 but the rest of the children were still living in the area. A 50th reunion celebration for Confederate veterans was held on the county courthouse grounds on September 18th, 1915 with a special monument being dedicated and a picture taken of all veterans present.28 However, as a sad final note, Billy had passed away just a month earlier29, missing out on what surely would have been a proud and meaningful moment for him and his military years. This paper was in some materials donated to the Society by Lucille Bryson. At the conclusion of the paper, it states that it was transcribed by Sadie Arrington Melton, a great granddaughter, for George Hooper, a great grandson of Clemmons Hooper. At the top of the first page is written "Written by Rev. B.N. Queen Sept 1, 1878"] Clemmons S. Hooper was born July 15,1810 Was married Feb. 8, 1829, to Polly Phillips. Departed this life Dec. 5th 1878, being 67 years, 6 months and a few days old. He professed religion while living at Moses Creek about 40 years ago, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. Lived in that connection 21 years. In 1848 or 49 was appointed class leader in this capacity. He labored with success, having the religious confidence of his brethren and Christians in general. For several years before he severed his connection with the Methodist, he expressed dis - satisfaction to this writer in reference to some of the tenets or practices of Methodism. His first objection was Baptism. He said he could find in the New Testament one Baptism, and but one, and that was Immersion. Second, he objected to the form of government, it being Episcopal, and his views was Democratic, or in other words Congregational. Third, he objected to the manner of administering the Sacrament, and especially to the inserting of those who could not eat as discerning the Lords body; having never complied with the law of the Table. He joined the Baptist Church at Johns Creek in Oct 1868. Afterwards he moved his place of residence and membership to Sols Creek. He was soon licensed to preach. His preaching was earnest, and always carried with it the force of gospel truth. In prayer he was able; His labor at the altar with penitents was hardly equal, for there he seemed to have on the whole armor of God. On the first Sabbath of November 1877 he filled his seat at the church for the last time on earth. He labored earnestly with the penitents, and had the satisfaction of rejoicing with two of them in the first joys of their Christian love. He had to have assistance to get home and was confined until his departure on Dec 5,1878. During his sickness he expressed himself all the time. Resigned to the will of his Master, his prayer was, Lord, Thy Will and not mine. And when the last moments came, it seemed that death had truly lost its sting, for without a struggle he fell asleep in the arms of Him in whom he trusted. May not the living now say with the apostle, "Oh. Death, where is thy sting." In conclusion we must say that the country has lost a good citizen, whose moral and religious example is worthy of imitation. His wife a devoted husband, his children a kind father, the Sabbath School a good Superintendent, the Church one of its best members. He was received by letter into the fellowship of Sols Creek Baptist Church March 17,1872. Licensed to preach by the unanimous vote of the Church on April 7,1872. Written by B.N. Queen T.J. We can hardly resist the temptation to be clever on this one.] Q. Quincy, who are you? A. I am the second child ("Anise Quincy") listed, a twenty-year-old daughter in the John Parker - Nancy Phillips household in the 1850 Haywood County Census, Family #807, p. 88 in Robert and Connie Medford's The Families of Haywood and Jackson Counties Based on the 1850 Census Records (WorldComm, 1994). I am not sure where the Medfords learned my name, since they relied on many sources to add interest and other factual data to a census list In the actual transcript of the 1850 census, I am shown as "QA," a twenty -year-old male. Q. Quincy, where are you in other official records? A. I don't seem to show up in the following, do I? (From Jackson County Deed Book 6, p. 238) "This Indenture made this fourteenth (14) day of April in the year eighteen hundred and sixty nine (1869) between Samuel Higdon... of the first, and Andrew J. Parker, Robert Parker, Tabitha Parker, Willis Parker, Albert Parker, John H. Parker, Elizabeth Moore selling to A. J. Wood On p. 440, Rhoda Watson, Thomas Parker, A.M. Parker, and H.C.
