Roles Chair, Publications (Editor) R. Larry Crawford Journeys Through Jackson is the official publication of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We finish another incredibly successful year in the Jackson County Genealogical Society, so forgive us for tooting our own horns. As we mentioned last time, we owe a big thanks to James and Bobby for providing us with exceptional programs. And if you haven't visited the office lately, be ready for a different appearance. ~~ Our periodical holdings are now upstairs, except for the issues from the mountain societies. We have ^^J prepared a directory for other publications, and volunteers will be happy to find the periodical that any patron wishes to use. What necessitated this new arrangement? We received a wonderful grant that allowed us to purchase a new microfilm cabinet, which needed to be set close to the machine, which meant that several bookcases needed to be moved, and therefore... and therefore...you get the picture. Inside, find "the find." Our lead article this time features a true "find" for Jackson County genealogists. Also see our member Carolyn Blixseth Wheeler's work on her ancestor Robert Collins, a well - known name in the present-day Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Catch up on the next groups of Gribble kin from Betty Cope Andrews, and lots of official records, pictures, and much good reading. And of course, regardless of the path you follow, may your holiday season be one of great joy and togetherness with family and friends. When you get to New Year's Eve, hold the bubbly long enough to make one outstanding resolution: Climb more (family) trees. The likeness above is of Albert Teaster and was taken 5 Aug 1934. Teaster was a Signs - Following preacher, and he was bitten by a rattlesnake several times during a service. For those persons unfamiliar with the practice or the churches, the participants take the last two verses of Mark 16 literally. Illegal in North Carolina and several other states, this practice has historically been tied to the Appalachian region. Members of the churches tend to be wary of publicity for good reason. The media tend to turn these folks into a sideshow and tend to show very little respect for the people themselves, persons who observe a religious practice according to their own convictions. Photograph submitted by JCGS member Elizabeth Moss Wilson, the photograph made at the home of one of her Coggins kin. u 146 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 K . J C G S P h o t o A l b u m K^ We love old aerial photographs. We cannot credit this picture properly, but it (as well as our next one) was in a gift to the Society from the late William "Wimpy" Hyatt. What in this photograph is still here? For starters, notice the old Chevrolet dealership fronting Highway 107. It lacks the showroom-that was added later. John Greene's Pure Oil station is certainly in evidence, as are the Wilson house and several other structures. And yes, the intersection is still here also. The triangular island is now mostly paved, and the traffic lights see literally thousands of vehicles every day. For those members not very familiar with Sylva, your Society office is located in the field to the right of the triangle. At the top of the photograph, notice the Asheville Highway veering to the left. It certainly stopped doing that about 1960, and today the location of that veer is home to another intersection surely created by the forces of darkness. And someone had a nicely cultivated field where First Charter and O'Malley's can be found today. This picture was dated 1949, and while that is not really old as genealogists figure time, it is surely interesting. ^ 147 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 J C G S P h o t o A l b um We are hoping that some member will place a date on this one. From the same Hyatt gift, it shows downtown Sylva. One can clearly see that the old court house was not painted at all. We see the Legion Hut in the lower right, and First Presbyterian Church in the right center. Obviously, there was no street with a bridge crossing Scotts Creek where we now have the major Grindstaff connector to the bypass, and the neighborhoods where we now find St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Sylva Church of Christ were at that time someone's fields. The trees obscure most of First Baptist and First Methodist churches. Notice how the picture makes Dills Cove look almost level with the town. ^J 148 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 C J C G S P h o t o A l b um C C This fabulous old photograph is shared with the Society by Bill Crawford. It shows his grandmother Mary Cowan Sherrill holding her son William Robert Sherrill Jr. and with her daughter Mary Edith Sherrill at her side. The photograph dates to 1908. 149 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 J C G S P h o t o A l b um v_y Above, a picture from about 1925. It shows on the front, Cicero Aiken, John H. Aiken, Nancy Coward Aiken, and Ellen Aiken. On the back are Johnny Aiken, Perry Aiken, Eula Aiken, Cole Aiken, and Jessie Aiken. Shared by JCGS member Dan Johnson. Below, can you identify these Blanton Branch boys from the same time period? <tj^vw 150 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 < ^ S w J a c k s o n C o u n t y S c h o o l D i s t r i c t s P r i o r to T h e C i v i l W a r [Ed. We have many persons to thank for this article. Carroll Ann Wykoff of Asheville found an old book at an auction. After purchasing it, she told Asheville Citizen - Times columnist and Western North Carolina author Bob Terrell that its subject was a pre-Civil War school district record from his native Jackson County. Terrell then wrote a column about the book for the newspaper. Our diligent Society members read the article, wrote Ms. Wykoff, and purchased the book. Following are excerpts from a full transcription provided by JCGS member Ruth Shuler. Considering all of the European unrest and revolution in 1848, this is certainly plausible. His wife was Sarah Rochester. The son William above is shown in our cemetery book as 20 May 1865 - 28 May 1930. The birthdate does not agree with the census or the Heritage Book story. This William married 20 Jan 1893 in Jackson County Mary Belle Cannon (19 May 1 8 8 0 - 7 Sep 1926). They are buried at Wesley Chapel. We have always known descendants in this family, and the late Odessa Extine Jackson was at one time a member of our society. We consider the spelling of the surname an Anglicization of "Eckstein." Angeline Mills is shown as widowed or divorced in the appropriate column. She was born Nancy Angeline Mills to Reuben and Amelia Elliott Mills. A Bible record in our possession gives her birth date as 18 Oct 1846, death date as 15 Sep 1943. This same Bible record states her marriage to W.E. Parris 24 Nov 1865. She was apparently divorced from Parris, whom she married again 21 Nov 1895 in Swain County. W.E. Parris (3 Apr 1837 - 7 Mar 1921) was the only son of Samuel and Matilda Shuler Parris. He had first been married to Lavina Deitz, from whom he was divorced. W.E. and Angeline are buried in Johnson City, Tennessee. The daughter above, Laura E., was born 27 Nov 1868, married D.J. The following article is submitted by JCGS member Carolyn Blixseth Wheeler.] I am a direct descendant of Robert James Collins (Robert Collins, Lucinda Collins, Sally LenLora Ward, Carrie Blixseth, Carolyn Blixseth Wheeler) and wish to share some of my family research with other descendants or others who may be interested. 1830 CENSUS (see Exhibit A) Most genealogy records list the following information for Robert Collins: Born Sept. 4, 1806 in Smokemount, Swain County, NC, married Elizabeth Beck on Dec. 19. 1830 at Smokemount, Swain County, North Carolina, Died April 9,1863.- Note: Swain County was not formed until 1871. Also note that tbe Ancestry. Com US and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 lists Robert Collins birthplace as Georgia. The 1^830 Census for Haywood County, North Carolina lists a Catherine Collins between ages 40 to 50 living next door to the families of John Beck, Jacob Beck and Samuel Beck. (North Carolina, HAYWOOD, ROLL 121 Book 1, Page 379a & b). A careful analysis of all the listed age ranges of her 7 children shows one male child age 20-30 who could easily be Robert Collins age 24 in 1830. Subsequent legal records show the same Beck families as related to Robert Collins and wife Elizabeth Beck. Catherine Collins is listed in the 1830 Census with children as follows: 2 children under age 5 (one male, one female), 1 male child under age 10,2 children age 10-15 (one male, one female), 2 children age 20-30 (one male, one female). The census also lists Martain (Martin) Collins family and perhaps Catherine lost her husband and moved to be near another, family member. In all likelihood Catherine was the mother of Robert Collins who may have lost her husband and moved to the wilderness from Georgia. Later that year when Robert and Elizabeth were married he listed his birthplace as Georgia. Although I have not seen the original record it seems it would be accurate. And I tend to believe that is the reason none of us have thus far been able to locate his parents in North Carolina. 1840 CENSUS The 1840 Census for Haywood, NC shows Robert Collins next door to John Beck 1850 CENSUS The 1850 Census for Haywood and Jackson County, NC show Robert Collins neighbors of the Mingus and Beck families including the family of Henry Jackson Beck. 1860 CENSUS The 1860 Census for Jackson County, NC shows the famjly of ft. Collens 51, Eliz. Collens 46, R.A. Collens 27, Jno. Collens 25, H. Collens 17, Jos. Collens 14, Kimsey Collens 12, L (Lucinda my great-grandmother) age 11, Jason Collens age 9 and Thos.Colllens age 7. Apparently Robert Collins had moved his family further into the wilderness as there are many pages of Indian names preceding his family entry #979. The family of H.J. Beck is listed as family #981. There is one other family listed beyond that, J. Ragon #982 1870 CENSUS Qualla Town , Jackson County, NC Collins, Elizabeth - age 60 keeping house- property value $1,500 personal $758 Collins,' Pamela R. -age 28, works in the home Collins, Josepha A. - age 27, merchant dry goods Collins, Jason L. - age 22, farming ' Stillwater, Polly - age 18, works in the house Ogle, Elvina - age 11, at home. 173 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 (Note: This is granddaughter Roseann Elvira Ogle whose mother was Sarah Elizabeth Collins, b. Conner and family, from North Carolina and Tennessee to Skagit county, by Noel V. Bourasaw, 2004 he states the following:" The^ Conner homeplace was on the North Carolina side of the Smokies, a 300- acre farm that stretched up and down the banks of the Oconaluftee river (often referred to as the Luftee),across from where Collins creek empties into it, and about two miles north of the present-day Smokemont Campground (North Carolina). Dock's father, Rev. Henry Conner, bought the Luftee farm from the Collins family before the Civil War. Henry moved to the farm during the war, when Dock was 8 years old". Additional information is found in The Conner Saga, part 2, story by Vic Beale, Knoxville Journal, August 30, 1976. "All nine children of Dock F. Conner were born in the big log house built on the Oconoaluftee river well before the Civil War Jehu remembers it was sometime after 1910 that they built the new frame house. They later were to regret tearing down the fine old log house, which was built by the original settlers of that tract of mountain land, the Collins family. ...The log home had two, vast, hungry fireplaces, one seven feet wide and one five...The main road across the Smokies now runs along the west bank of the Luftee, across the river the Conner homeside. .... COLLINS and COLLINS PICNIC AREA NEWFOUND GAP ROAD - (US 441- Great Smoky Mountains- Collins HomeSite) In 1997 I visited North Carolina for the first time while on business related trips. My only point of reference was old obiterary notice for my Aunt Gertrude Davis who was January 28, 1904 in Dillsboro, NC. I visited Sylvia, Dillsboro and Bryson City. Prior to my trip l made some phone calls and was connected to Jackson County Genealogical members who were very helpful in my research and took me to several of the old cemeteries where my ancestors were buried. Along the way I purchased many books and brochures. Several years later I read the Newfound Gap Road booklet and on page 22 it described the "Collins Creek Picnic Area is an excellent place to eat a meal and relax by a stream. Collins Creek and Mount Collins are named for Robert Collins, a local guide who helped Professor Arnold Guyot map the Smokies in the 1850's. Guyot named many of the mountains within the region and discovered that Newfound Gap was the lowest gap in the Smokies." It also described "Smokemont Campground" as former lumber company town. In the book titled "The Blue Ridge & Smoky Mountains", by Jim Hargan published by The Countryman Press, Woodstock, Vermont 2002, 2005, see page 347 the author states ..." views and wild berries on the peak of Mount Collins (6,188 feet, the 25th tallest in the East)." And on Page 352 Picnic Areas Collins Creek Picnic Area. This large, lovelypicnic area is scattered along three loops through a cool, streamside forest 6.65 mile up the Newfound Gap Rd, from the Park's boundary in Cherokee, NC. Despite the fact that it is the only picnic area on the North Carolina Newfound Gap Road., it is little used, possibly because it had no recreation opportunities besides eating outdoors. Even its one CCC hiking trail has been closed for 30 years, a pity, because it climbed through a virgin forest toa good view". MT COLLINS SHELTER (1960) - "Sleeps 12. Privy. ROBERT COLLINS - MOUNTAIN GUIDE FOR ARNOLD GUYOT In the "The Smoky Mountain News- Mountain Voices " issue 10-10-01, Bryson City writer George Ellison says, "In 1928, the U.S. Geographic Board first named a mountain located between Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome for Kephart. But this raised a furor as the mountain was already locally known as Mt. Collins, having been so-designated by famous 19th century explorer Arnold Guyot (1807-1888) in honor of his mountain guide Robert Collins (1806-1863). Kephart preferred Mt. Collins as a namesake, but he wrote the USGB saying, "I assure you that to me personally the whole matter is a bore, and I hope to have no more of i t " Well, what he got two months before his death in an automobile accident in 1931 was this splendid mountain (Mt. Kephart) north of Newfound Gap along the Appalacian Trail (AT). (Getting a mountain officially named for you by the USGB is sort of like sainthood — generally speaking your chances are infinitely better i f you're dead." http://www.smokvmountainnews.com/issues/10 01/10 10 01/back then.shtml In the book titled "History of Western North Carolina by John Preston Arthur, Edward & Broughton Printing Co. 1914 section titled "THE MERITS OF THE CONTROVERSY. Dr. Arnold Guyot of Princeton College, in an article published in the Asheville News, July 18,1860:".. ..From these facts it is evident that the honorable senator [T. L. Clingman] could not possibly know when he first ascended it that anyone had visited or measured it before him, nor have any intention to do any injustice to Dr. Mitchell.... As to the highest group in the Great Smoky Mountains, however, I must remark that, in the whole valley of the Tuckaseegee and Oconaluftee, I heard of but one name applied to the highest point, and it is that of Mount Clingman. The greatest authority around the peak, Robert Collins, Esq., knows of no other.... Gen. Clingman was the leader of a party which made, in 1858, the first measurement, and the party was composed, besides himself, of Mr. S. P. Buckley and Dr. S. L. Love. He caused Mr. Collins to cut a path six miles to the top, which enabled me to carry there the first horse ever seen on these heights . . . . The central or highest peak is therefore designated as Clingman's Dome, the south peak, the next in height, as Mount Buckley, the north peak as Mount Love." http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nc/wnc12rhtm In WebRoots.Org History of Western North Carolina: A History (1730-1913) by John Preston Arthur, Chapter 8-B. In that year three farmers (Ephraim Mingus, Robert Collins, and George W. Hayes) from Oconaluftee, North Carolina, applied at the Sevier County land office for a grant of a 50-acre tract of land including the bluff and its salt deposits. Tennessee sold the tract to the men on December 6,1838. The Epsom Salts Manufacturing Company was subsequently formed to exploit the deposit AJum Cave Bluff is on a southern spur of Mount Le Conte in Sevier County, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, at an elevation of about 1,600 meters (Fig. 1). No cave exists; Alum Cave Bluff is a rock shelter about 30 meters high and 10 meters deep (Fig. 3). The site is 3.6 krn by moderately steep but well maintained trail from a parking lot on the main transmountain highway (U.S. 441). The hike is delightful, through Appalachian cove forest and heath bald with good panoramic views from the higher elevations, and Alum Cave Bluff is deservedly one of the most popular hiking destinations in the park. NEWSPAPER ARTICLES Two page article from Great Smoky Mountain National Park printed in Asheville Citizen-Times, Asheville, N.C. - Old Settlers Recall yists of Scientist Made Thorough Study of Altitudes in Great Smoky Mountains. By W.C. Allen. The long article is largely about Swiss Princeton Geographer Arnold Guyot and his quest to map the high peaks of the Appalachian System of Mountains. The article quotes Joseph A. Collins (son of Robert Collins) who was interviewed for this article and part of the guide party for Guyot. The article was dated August 20. (and presumed date 1930 to 1935)... "Mr. Collins (Joseph) is himself a Confederate veteran and a man of much versatility. He is active, intelligent and fully abreast of the times. His recollection of the striking incidents related in the foregoing statement is vivid and accurate". Joseph Collins is quoted as saying," My Father's name was Robert Collins, who was born Sept. 4,1806, and died April 9,1863, while he was in command of 500 Confederate soldiers, mostly Cherokee Indians, in Sevier county, Tenn. He was born and lived all his life in the valley of the Ocona Luftee river about 12 miles from the top of Clingman's Dome. He was the man who cut a path six miles long to the top of the Dome so that Professor Guyot could ride to the top. He was a farmer and stock rasier and not what you might call an educated man. He was such a well informed man about the mountains that Professor Guyot named one of the mountains he surveyed and measured Mount Collins. Guyot said that Robert Collins was the greatest authority around the peak, that is, Clingman's Dome". 179 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2005 "I was born in 1843 and was, therefore, 15 years old when Professor Guyot came to our house and stayed two weeks. I went with him on all of his trips to the peaks in the Great v ^ Smokies. I went with him to the top of Clingman's Dome and helped him in handling his instruments. He found that the Dome was just about six feet lower than Mount Mitchell, which he has measured twice. General Clingman said that if the difference was only six feet he was going to build a tall tower and earth mounds so that the Dome would be higher than MitcheU". An Aaron Bryson descendant, Fred Coffey, was at one time a member of our society. Avery M. Bryson married Julia E.
