Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We have never been prone to excuses for the lateness of this publication, but this time we actually have one. The computer didn't break, but it tore a ligament or two. Anyway, we have no patience with excuses or with computer malfunctions, and we'll just chalk it up to valid experience. Small potatoes indeed, what with the present hurricane season wreaking havoc and creating more problems than we can imagine. Inside, however, find plenty to entertain your tired eyes. We have pictures and more pictures, we have lots of official records for you to examine, we even have a narrative or two if that is your genealogical cup of tea. AH of the following Society members are, in one way or another, responsible for the publication before you. Contributors are Jim Mason, Bobbie Bradburn Henderson, James Monteith, Dorris Dills Beck, Linda Miller Duncan, Betty Cope Andrews, Ruth Crawford Shuler, Deanne Gibson Roles, and Helen Davis Cooper, along with a few items done by your editor. Many thanks to James and Bobby for providing very fine programs for us. We hear persons speak on every phase of genealogy and mountain life, and approximately twenty to thirty members are on hand to enjoy themselves on the second Thursday of the month. All persons are welcome to attend. Notice that this issue is accompanied by your Holden Award nomination. Please submit it by IS November to the Society address. The top postcard shows the town of Darrington, the bottom one the town of Kelso. One of the most fascinating aspects of these old pictures of towns is the automobiles. And notice the marquee...Roy Rogers? Ginger Rogers? The proper credit here goes to a photographer we can identify only as "Ellis." Both cards were in the possession of Mrs. Margaret Jones Bradburn, whose daughter Bobbie Henderson shares with the Society. 101 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m ^J Some of the photographs shared with us are too good. The following is the editor's own work, and we caution readers that this story is far from complete. It is, however, in.the very nature of genealogy to expand a family whenever possible.] In the September — October 2003 issue of Journeys Through Jackson, we delineated the James Parris - Amy McEntire family in our "Grandchildren of David and Mary Morrow Parris" series. At the end of that particular segment, we listed the family of Lucinda Parris Norman, the youngest child of James and Amy. Lucinda's oldest son, W.D. Parris, born before her marriage to Benjamin T. Norman, is duly listed with two 1880's marriages in Swain County. In a note attached to this family, we stated that we had no idea what happened to W.D. Parris. Enter James Monteith, current JCGS Co-Vice President and Monteith researcher. The second wife of W.D. Parris was Leanah Monteith, daughter of S.A. and Sarah McClure Monteith and a sister of James' great - grandfather Andrew Jackson Monteith. James has been on a determined quest to find pictures of as many of S.A. Monteith's children as possible. We spoke with James about Leanah, who we knew was buried in the Monteith Cemetery at Lauada. The TVA removal records gave the name of Nora Dorsey, a Leanah daughter, who had authorized the removal as the nearest relative. Nora at the removal time lived in Etowah, Tennessee. Now James has something of the bulldog in him, and he started making telephone calls into southeastern Tennessee. Operating under an assumption (genealogists are never to assume anything) that Nora was Leanah's only child, both of us would learn very differently. To cut through our messy details, James would report that he had established contact with this Dorsey family, who had in turn given him the name of Mrs. Peggy Wharton in Etowah. Both of us called Mrs. Wharton, James exclaiming because she* owned a picture of Leanah Monteith Parris, and your editor hoping against hope that something else would come to light about W.D. Parris. Neither of us would be disappointed. After our telephone calls, we agreed with Mrs. Wharton that we would visit in Etowah. We traveled down to Etowah after work on Friday May 20. At 9:00 Saturday morning, we visited the home of our newest cousin Peggy. Not only did she have pictures for us to see and copy, but we learned a great deal about W.D. Parris and Leanah Monteith, and in the process, we were made to feel as welcome as if we had known each other for a lifetime. This outstanding morning ended with a visit to Green Hill Cemetery in Etowah, where a number of this family rest. After a delicious meal, we came back to Jackson County (too early, be we had professional obligations on Saturday evening) satisfied that we had made a good start. Our only disappointment would be that our pictures were not clear, and we needed to ask Mrs. Wharton for yet another indulgence.. .to send us copies. We have already stated that Leanah is buried in Swain County. What was not clear at first is whether she always lived in Swain County. Peggy cleared that one up too. For' a time, at least, Leanah lived in Etowah, and another record will show that the family also lived in Georgia. In any case, Leanah Monteith was the mother of five children with W.D. Parris. Possibly a sixth child, Sarah Parris, is buried beside Leanah in Monteith Cemetery. In one of the more interesting stories, Peggy related that Leanah also raised a child (named Jim "Parris") who was actually the infant of a geologist and whose wife was dying and begged Leanah to raise the child. Remarkable. (This "Jim" made his home in Hazard, Kentucky, according to Peggy.) 103 V J Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 Children of W.D. Parris and Leanah Monteith Parris Nora Ellen Parris (1888 - 1970) m. Pies Henry Dorsey (1885 - 1962) buried Green Hill, Etowah Francis Lawson Parris (1890 - 1930) m. Martha Ann Neal (1897 - 1971) buried Maces Springs, Virginia Walter Lee Paris (14 Dec 1892 - 11 Dec 1977) m. Mae Lillie Allison (8 Oct 1897 - 26 Sep 1996) buried Green Hill, Etowah [Ed. He dropped one of the "R's" in "Parris."] W. Edd Parris (died in a logging accident in Oroville, CA. Peggy has a newspaper announcement of the death.. He is buried at Green Hill in Etowah.) Lorena Parris (1897 - 1983) m. (1) Avery Lee Jenkins (1898 - 1958) m. (2) Ora Lee Buttram (18 Apr 1901 - 19 Oct 1996) All buried at Green Hill, Etowah. Lorena was the mother of Peggy Wharton and her brother William Lee Jenkins. This family lived in Etowah because of Henry Dorsey's job on the railroad. Walter also was employed in Etowah, and Lorena moved to live with Nora at age 13. (Lorena's obituary states that she was "a native of BushneU, North Carolina.") We are not clear if W.D. Parris lived at Etowah. At some point, he moved away from this family and made his home near Kingsport. He married again after Leanah's death, but remained affectionate to his children and grandchildren from his marriage to Leanah. Peggy has a copy of the mortuary bulletin at the time of his funeral. It states that he was born 20 Mar 1865 and died 13 Feb 1949, and that he is buried in Kingsport City Cemetery. Peggy remembers that he moved into town from a farm where he marketed produce. \^_J James could find no listing for a City Cemetery in Kingsport, so our trip to that destination on July 9 was cut short. We were not willing to look for a needle in a haystack, but we were to have even more good luck. James had visited the grave of Henry Monteith (great - grandfather of S.A. Monteith, no less) near Greeneville, Tennessee, and needed to go back there to secure some photographs. After doing so, we visited the Greene County Genealogical Society. Here we obtained a death certificate for W.D. Parris. It states that his usual occupation was "railroad foreman" for Southern Railway. All of the other details are the same as the mortuary bulletin, and interestingly, both parents are listed as "unknown." Our other great good fortune came about with articles written for the Holston Territory Genealogical Society's 1993 book Families and History of Sullivan County, Tennessee Volume One 1779 -1992 (Walsworth, 1993). In this book are stories about the Francis Lawson Parris family, including a very fine account of his wife, who was widowed early with four young daughters to raise. (Story #1218) At least two of those daughters also have stories in the book. We won't delineate this family just yet, because we have yet to meet any of them. One highly interesting detail from the story #1218 is that "Frank" Parris was born in Rome, Georgia in 1890. This proves that W.D. and Leanah Parris lived not only in Swain County, but in at least one other place as well. Possibly the most interesting fact that has emerged so far is that "W.D." stood for William Dillard. We had never seen any documentation locally that referred to him other than as W.D. And we have many questions that so far have proved elusive in trying to solve. First, is the City Cemetery in Kingsport now known as Oak Hill? If so, are W.D. Parris and his second wife \J buried there? 104 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 C Then we bring in another highly intriguing detail. Peggy Wharton states that W.D. Parris had a half-brother who also lived in the Kingsport area, one who went by the Parris surname. Was this one of the sons of Benjamin and Lucinda Parris Norman? We have one (S.C.) whom we cannot find. Another interesting question: What happened to the first wife of W.D. Parris? In the Swain County marriage records for 1882, W.D. Parris (age 17), son of Lucinda Norman, m. Amanda Wiggins (14), daughter of G.W. Shuler and Jane S. Kitchens 7 Aug 1882. What immediately stands out about this record is the extreme youth of both parties. Did Amanda die? Was there a divorce or an annulment? W.D. Parris then married Leanah Monteith in Swain County 6 Feb 1887. The picture below is a copy of the one much coveted by James. It shows Leanah Monteith Parris. On the following page, W.D. Parris not long before his death in 1949. He is pictured with two grandsons from his second marriage. Thank you again to Peggy Wharton for her graciousness and generosity, forward to meeting some of the Kingsport cousins as well. We look K , K . 105 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 v _ y K J By way of postscript to this article, we managed a trip to Kingsport in August. We learned that the cemetery is one and the same, and that William D. Parris and his third wife LuEmma Robinson are buried there. Nothing of importance being done a bill passed to cheapen marriage license and a few other frivolous things that are of no general interest. A bill now before the General Assembly to pay $30,000 annually to wounded and disabled Confederate Soldiers. Don't know what will be done with it. Respectfully /s/ A.H. Hayes (Notes: This letter was sent on stationery with the North Carolina House of Representatives letterhead. We won't comment on the gossipy aspects of his visit to the state prison for women, but notice how liberal he is with references to scriptures. Not a very forgiving heart, either, if his reference to a pardon reveals his attitudes. The only way that the monetary figure could be correct would be if the appropriation was to be for a collective thirty thousand dollars. If he were talking about individual veterans, he has certainly added a zero. In either case, the legislature was being parsimonious.) For such, he had passed along to Hyatt 198 chickens worth a quarter apiece. Fascinating. How big were the chickens? Just how did one transport 198 chickens from Jackson or Swain Counties to Walhalla in 1874? We believe that the 4th item on the list was a shawl for Estes' wife. G r a v e s o f C i v i l W a r P r i s o n e rs < ^ [Ed. The following article appeared in the Waynesville Mountaineer in the June 8, 2005 issue. We reprint it here with permission. Submitted by JCGS member Linda Miller Duncan.] Civil W a r buff locates Haywood P OW graves Personal quest leads to finding Haywood Civil War graves By D. John Trull Jr. Special to the Mountaineer My own great-great grandfather, Corporal Branch Hamilton M. Trull, who fought in the war between the states on the side of the confederacy, was incarcerated in a federal POW camp at Rock Island, 111. While researching the camp he was held prisoner at, I became interested in that aspect of the war. This is why I started this project. I was not prepared for the flood of emotion that would soon engulf my soul on that late overcast afternoon in New Jersey, October 2004, as I turned left off Highway 49 onto the tree-lined country road leading to the Finns Point National Cemetery. I had no idea what awaited me. I parked my car and walked the short distance to the monument that I had set out to visit. I sought out this place as a result of a book I had been reading that named Finns Point as well as other federal POW camps. It was not outstanding in its construction - it was the usual granite obelisk with a large bronze plaque, inscribed with the names of the fallen Confederates. Standing there, however, in the quiet of the day, I soon felt myself joined by the souls of the Confederate soldiers buried so far from their homes in the mountains of western North Carolina. I became one with them. They spoke to my soul, and, as they spoke, my own heart responded and they seemed to cry out with the strength of one voice, "Please take us home." My heart ached that day as I prayed to God for the souls of these brave soldiers of the South and my resolve was, at that moment, fixed. I would do what I could to identify all the fallen Confederate soldiers from the western counties of North Carolina who died and were buried in the various Union POW camps: I would symbolically bring them home to the soil of their youth. I have painstakingly compiled a list of Confederate soldiers who were part of western North Carolina units who died in various Union POW camps. The list is by name and location of the. camp in which the POWs died, their name, company, date of death, and unit to which they were assigned. As a footnote and without exception, every one of the POWs listed in the chart on the next page, according to the national records, died of malnutrition (starved to death) or died of disease, most likely the result of their confinement. This is especially outrageous since we know that the North had plenty, of food for the general population and the Union troops. The degree of respect afforded these soldiers after death was also evident in how they were buried - most were buried in mass graves, in foreign soil, where they lost their individual identities. V ^ 115 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 My sincere hope is that this list will bring some closure to the descendants of these me. (sic) And that they will finally know where they are and can visit, and pay hoage (sic) to them, as they so rightly deserve. •^J Isl D.John Trull Captain Julius Welch Camp 229 Sons of Confederate Veterans Ft. We have read before that poor leadership led to the surrender en masse of companies of the 62nd North Carolina at Cumberland Gap. Certainly Jackson County also has a long list of POW names from a couple of those companies, incarcerated at the notorious Camp Douglas. We have tried to be as faithful as possible to the newspaper account. In places where no date of death was given, we have inserted (no date). A challenge to a Society member: Do some real historical research and find the Jackson County men who served in the Union mounted infantry regiments mustered in Tennessee. There will be more than a few from all of the western North Carolina counties, given that the loyalties here were so divided. In fact, we would offer the opinion that until the last several decades, political party loyalty was based mostly on the position the particular family took in 1860 and 1864. Of course all of that changed after World War II, and especially during and after the 1960's. The author of the above article, J. John Trull, Jr., may be reached at 828 - 627 - 1567. Scarcely anything could be more fun than going through old pictures, and scarcely anyone could be found who would be nicer and more helpful than our member Helen Davis Cooper, who shares these photographs with us.] The World War I soldier above is Leon Dills, maternal uncle of Helen Davis Cooper. He was a victim of poison gas in France. Below, Zeb and Lora Rhea. Lora was a Wilson and a great - aunt of Helen. 138 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 C < ^ C This priceless old photograph is of Roame Cooper's grandparents, the Kincaids, who lived near Hayesville. 139 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2005 ^J The gun-totin' lady above is Helen's grandmother, Iter Cumi Fisher Davis. (One can also see the back of "Grandpa" William Vance Davis.) According to Helen, Mrs. Davis could use the gun too. The picture is taken at the spring house at the head of Fisher Creek. The house where this couple lived was built in 1839. Below, the railroad trestle at Proctor. Taken 22 September 1945, it says "Panama!" on the back. The buddies are identified on the photograph as Edwin, Bill, and Roy. Roy is Roy Douglas Davis, Helen's brother.
