Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We would start this time with asking our membership to study p. 49 and pages 90 - 93. We have opportunities for your service if you are inclined to help. Our fundraiser might need "all hands and the cook," so please be willing in case you are needed. In our second quarterly issue, we need to thank the following members: Ruth Ensley Bryson, Tim j Barker, Mack Sutton, Rick Frizzell, Harry Bumgarner, Bill Crawford, Dorris Beck, Deanne Roles, Gary Phillips, Betty Foti, and of course Ruth Shuler. You will see the hand of all of these fine members in this particular issue, and like so many of these publications, it would be impossible to have it together if it were not for the willingness and efforts of these folks. Ruth Shuler always deserves a special hand, because having grown up in the same household, she recognizes the myriad shortcomings of your editor and comes to the rescue. Many thanks to all. We are fascinated this time with the Emanuel Shuler account, Tim Barker's pictures, and with the striking similarity of the Parris forebears to folks we know today. When you have exhausted your energies with all of that mowing, come inside, pour yourself a glass of iced tea that is as sweet as syrup, kick back and enjoy JTJ. It is, as always, your publication. Since it is still in the negotiating stages, we will need to give a rain check on t h e details, b u t this is a v e r y large matter. Cousin Cecil D. Crawford is not a J C G S member, but he has a n intense interest in the history of t h e Crawford family, particularly from t h e military standpoint. He has recently learned t h a t the Goldsboro - Wayne County a r e a c h a p t e r of the SCV had placed markers commemorating the soldiers who died in t h a t area. Those Confederates included M a r t i n V. Crawford from Jackson County. This was really good news. Although the soldiers were buried in a mass grave, t h e m a r k e r s , as we understand, a r e located in Willow Cemetery. The Society is planning a multifaceted fundraiser for later in t h e year. Still in the early planning' stages, we hope to offer a sale day where crafts, antiques, food, plants, and of course books will be on sale. If you live outside J a c k s o n County, stay in touch with us for t h e details. 49 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m \ j \ J Above, t h e older daughters of Birton Rickman Henson and Addie Calhoun Henson. On the mountain behind where he lived was a cave known as the "Plez Green Hole." As the story goes, d u r i n g the Civil War, Plez Green stayed in it to watch for any signs of federal raiders coming through, so t h at an a l a rm could be sounded. He stayed there for most of t h e w a r . Above the cave, t h e t o p of t h e mountain gives a very good view of t h e hills a n d valleys surrounding it. One can look all t h e way u p t h e Savannah valley from here. F r om t h e outside, it doesn't look like much, but if you crawl into the opening on y o u r belly, it supposedly opens u p into a l a r g e room where you can stand up and move about with ease. Rumors in the community told of old lead musket rounds being found there in the 1960's. I have never been able to confirm that. Plez Green - and this is just speculation - may have been Pleasant Green who m a r r i e d Isabell Cabe, daughter of Amos and Esther Cabe. Isabell's sisters were Hannah, who married Warren Barker; a n d Catherine, who m a r r i e d J a s o n B a r k e r . Ella Mae Brooks, a cousin, told me that while she attended school at the old Viewpoint School, the history subject being taught was t h e Civil W a r , and the teacher took all t h e students on a field t r ip to this cave. One of her classmates got stuck in the opening, and the class had a hard time freeing her. This would have been in the 1930's...when the cave was probably well - known to many people who knew it a n d t h e s t o ry behind it. ^J 52 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m 2 *« Above, Charity Barker Green, daughter of Jason and C a t h e r i n e Cabe Barker. Genealogy just gets better all the time. A telephone call led one Jerry P. Hendricks of Fort Smith, Arkansas to Ruth and Roy Shuler. Hendricks is a descendant of Emanuel Shuler, one of the sons of George Shuler, the original Shuler settler in this area. He followed his telephone call with several family group sheets which he has generously given us permission to use in Journeys Through Jackson. Since Jerry Hendricks plans to publish his Shuler material, we will quote his work in italics.] Emanuel was born October 20, 1793 in the Pendleton District of South Carolina where his Swiss ancestors had first settled. In 1801, when he was 8 years old, he moved with his family north about forty miles to near the Great Smoky Mountains in Buncombe County, North Carolina. When they purchased this land, they were in Buncombe County, but because of changing county borders and new counties being formed, the location of their new homeplace was changed to Haywood Co and later to Jackson Co. One of his father's tracts of land ended up in Swain Co, NC His father also owned land in Macon Co, NC. Actually when Emanuel's parents moved to North Carolina, they never moved again - the state just kept redisricting their home into new or other counties. Emanuel and Jane Ingram were married about 1819 and their first two children were born in Haywood County, North Carolina. Emanuel and Jane and one son and one daughter were recorded In the 1820 Census of Haywood County, and his parents and his brother David and his family were also recorded living in the same county. In 1824, Emanuel bought some Cherokee Indian lands in the western portion of Macon County, NC, which several years later was redistricted into Cherokee County. On December 30, 1846, Emanuel filed to the Cherokee Claims - Fourth Board a claim for $762.00. A decree rejecting this claim was recorded on February 16, 1847. At the time, Emanuel was living on former Cherokee Indian lands in Cherokee County, NC. Since there has been no record of any Indian blood being in the Shuler or related families, it is to be assumed that this was a claim which listed "Subsisting Indioans - Decree rejecting claim under lSf* article." In 1848, Emanuel sold the farm in Cherokee County and the family moved about 100 miles southwest to Cass(now named Bartow) County in northwestern Georgia, where their last child was born. Emanuel's land and home in Bartow County is today found east of AdairsviUe, Georgia, being north of Hwy. 140 with the east border of his property running to Sinard Road This land consisted of 160 acres and is Lot #41 in the 6* District of Bartow County. Emanuel, Jane, and their family were enumerated in the 1850 Census of Cass County, Georgia, and recorded living at home with them were their children Lavina (30), John (28), William (26), George (21), Eliza (22), Margaret (16), James (14), Goldman (12) and Richard (1). Emanuel was always reasonably prosperous, and throughout the middle part of his life was a slave holder. As the years went by, his children married and started families in Georgia. His sons fought for the Confederacy but returned home to face the total devastation of their homeland...and with little hope after the war, most of Emanuel and Jane's children...had settled in northwest Arkansas. In 1875, Emanuel and Jane sold his land near AdairsviUe, Georgia...and settled near their children in Cole Township of Sebastian County, Arkansas. 67 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 Emanuel and Jane are buried beside each other in the Shuler family plot at Mountain View Cemetery north ofHackett \J The Family of Emanuel and Jane Ingram Shuler Emanuel Shuler (20 Oct 1793 - 11 Mar 1883) m. John and Matilda are beside each other in Coop Prairie Cemetery in Mansfield, Arkansas. According to WUliam's Confederate pension records, he died in Polk Co., Arkansas, but he is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Wiley Reeves died in the 1870's, and Eliza, their children and her sister Lavinia had moved to Cole Township in Sebastain County, Arkansas by the late 1870's. George was "a farmer & operating a cotton gin"...(now) this property is a cattle ranch owned and operated by his descendants, the Wood brothers. George is buried at Mountain View. James had acquired both a taste for gold and experience in mining.. .He was to work for many years as a miner in Utah's Tintic district mines. James Fayette Shuler died in Payson (Utah) at the age of eighty -five. He and Mary Ann are buried beside each other in Payson City Cemetery. Goldman...was recorded in the 1881 Census of British Columbia...living in the household of Cum Chis, of Chinese origin. Many of us knew her whUe living with him and since and we have never seen or heard of any Loos, or careless conduct, to say nothing about incontinancy. Nor do we believe that she has ever been guilty in any way whatever. Oct 11th, 1834 James Whitaker EH B. Herren 75 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 James Shearer Stephen Whitaker Nathan B. MuU John Davison AUen Fisher John Bryson KJ KJ 76 c c c Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 Posey Statement I certify that some time in the fall of 1833 John Starnes told me that he and his wife had separated, the cause of which was that he had been jealous of her from a little while after they were married, and had frequently watched, expecting to find her with a Negro man who belonged to her father, but that he had never seen anything at all uncaste or unbecoming in her. And that of course his jealousy arose intirely from the evil of his own heart, and that from everything he had ever seen or known of her he felt confident she was, and always had been, a chaste and virtuous woman. He also requested me to go with him to Wm. Cockram's (his wife's father) hoping that through my instrumentality and his acknowledgments they might live together again. But when we went it appeared that she (his wife) had suffered so much from him that she could not think of ever putting herself into his power any more. He therefore went away. Certified Oct. 8* 1834 Isl Humphrey Posey WUliam Cockerham Statement State of North Carolina, Macon County This is to certify that John Starnes, from the state of Tennessee, in the year 1831 came into this county. A stranger but an industrious Mechanick. That in August 1832 he maried my Daughter EUzabeth M. Cockraham. After their manage something like three months and whUe living at my house, Starnes exhibited signs of conviction for sin almost every day takeing a Bible and going into a retired place, as I thought, to read. This conduct continued some time, when in 1833, Starnes and his wife moved from my house into the State of Georgia, and in the fall of that year they separated from each other. Soon after which Starnes in company with the Rev. Mr. Posey came to my house (my Daughter having returned home) in order to effect a reconsiliation with his wife, as he said, when for the first time I was led fully into the causes of their seperation. Mr. Starnes acknowledged to me and his wife in the presents of Mr. Posey that he had not only accused her rongfully but had treated her ill. That at the time when they Uved at my house he had often pretended to be under conviction for sin, for no other purpose than to watch her under an impression that she loved some other better than him. That at the time when he used to take a Bible and retire to read, as we had thought, it was only to watch her and my Negro man. He stated that she had uniformly treated him weU and behaved in every particular so far as was in her power, as an affectionate wife. And that the whole of his jealosy and harsh conduct originated in his own base and depraved heart That in viewing her whole conduct he did believe her not only inosent but in every respect a chaste and virtuous woman. To all of which his wife replied that he had made such acknowledgments to her before. That she had done all for him that an honest woman could do, and that she had often told him that if his treatment to her ever became publick, or to the ears of her Father and Mother, she could not again have the courage to live with him. Certified Oct. 9th, 1834 Isl WUUam Cockraham Elizabeth Starnes Memorial To the Honorable, The General Assembly of the State of N. Carolina,—Greeting— Gentlemen, The memorial of your hand maid humbly sheweth to your honorable body. 77 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 That in the year 1832 she intermarried with a man by the name of John Starnes. That her prospects at that time were flattering. That she Uved but a very short time however, in KJ harmony with her husband as he commenced a course of abuse to her, in less than three months after her mariage. With a hope of better times, she removed with her husband to the State of Georgia. But {instead of amendment, he became still more, and more abusive to her—accusing your memorialist of Incontinance and restricting her in every priviledge, and abusing her to an intollerable degree. AU of which without any provocation, or cause, in the slightest degree. Your memoraUst would further show to your honorable body. That in all her conduct with her Husband, she has behaved herself as a loving and obedient wife, and in her intercourse with others, she has acted in a chaste and virtuous manner, in all particulars. Your Memorialist would further observe (and which was certainly too much for her to bear) he accused your memorialist with intimacy with her father's Negro boy. And flnaUy a seperation took place and Mr. Starnes is gone I know not where. Your memorialist is therefore left an injured and disconsolate woman. And still further, he also has left a small daughter, the child of your memorialist, which she has now to scuffle with, and which with the assistance of her friends she has no fears of being able to do. But the danger of her husbands returning and takeing from your memorialist any property that her friends may give her or that she may have the fortune to acquire renders her situation still the more difficult and forbids her friends from doing what they otherwise would do. Your memoralist would therefore humbly pray your honorable body to grant her such relief as you in your wisdom may think prone. Either a seperation of the bonds of Matrimony from her husband, or the authority of holding all such property as your memorialist may hereafter acquire. And your memorialist as in duty bound will ever pray. Isl Elizabeth M. Cockraham On reverse: \^_J Memorial of Elizabeth Starnes. In H Commons Nov 22,1834. On motion of Mr. J. W. Starnes praying to be divorced from her husband John Starnes have considered the same and Respectfully Report That the Petitioner intermarried with John Starnes in Macon County in the year 1831; that shortly after her marraige she removed with him to Georgia and in a very little time was entirely abandoned by her husband who left her in a forlorn and helpless situation dependant for support and protection upon the cold charity of an unfeeling world. That through the assistance of her Father she was enabled to return to North Carolina where she has resided ever since separate and apart from her husband. It is in evidence to your committee that whilst she resided with her Hsband his treatment towards her was very cruel which she endured with patient resignation. It is further in evidence that the Petitioner's Character for chastity is above suspicion and that she is prudent & industrious and inasmuch as her husband has entirely deserted her aud gone to parts unknown and for the reasons above set forth they ask leave to report the BUI without amendment and recommend its passage all which is respectfully submitted. Watson and his third wife Nannie Hoxit, gave permission to publish this data to Ruth Shuler, who prepared the material for publication. Ruth writes " This Bible is a large, heavy volume bound in leather with an indented, beveled design on the front containing the words "Holy Bible" and "John M. Watson" etched in gold. In each corner of the front is a picture also etched in gold. It is possible to see in the center of the book the heavy twine holding the pages together. The Bible contains the Old and New Testaments, the Apocrypha, some 2500 illustrations, numerous tables and specifications devoted to Biblical subjects, and a household Bible dictionary. The presentation page reads: Presented to John M. Watson by Thomas H. Bell 1885. Mr. Hoyle does not know who Bell was." What follows on tbe next four pages is experimental. One of the fund-raising ideas we have kicked around in brainstorming sessions is the notion of a cookbook with genealogies added. We see this as an opportunity for all of those members who do not live in Jackson County to share some favorite recipes and your genealogical information. Look at the following format: We will attempt to use a left page for a person's Ahnentafel, such as the ones for Ruth Crawford Shuler and Betty Painter Foti below. On the facing page we will print a couple of favorite recipes. With a whole group of participants, this could be fun and informative too.
