From the Editor October...traditionaUy our most beautiful month in the mountains, and certainly one of the busiest We have not yet seen any cooler weather to speak of in Jackson County, but the mornings are becoming crisp, and the sky is a blue unmatched anywhere else we have ever seen. The issue before the membership this time is a potpourri. We begin by saying goodbye to no fewer than four society members, two of whom became Ufe members early in our short history, another of whom was one of the true "doers" of Jackson County, and the final one, a former member, helped , even in her Ulness, to fUI in some gaps in our cemetery book. We shaU miss one and aU. What a pleasing experience to be able to present our Society awards to persons who embody the principles and work ethic that we foster in this Society. In MerreU Riddle and Gene McClure, voters in the Society chose two of the classiest persons we know. Enjoy, in this issue, the work of a dozen Society members who share genealogies, official records, old photographs, the final portion of another cemetery survey, and the abundance of good wUl that makes it aU possible. An unbeatable combination? JTJ and a fried apple pie to celebrate the season. C S o c i e t y P r e s e n t s t h e A n n u a l D e i t z a n d H o l d e n A w a r d s At the annual picnic meeting in August, JCGS honored Merrell Jenkins Riddle and WiUiam "Gene" McClure with the Robert Lee and Drusilla Holden Award and the Daniel Washington Deitz Award, respectively. Dr. Riddle, the author of several books abstracting western North Carolina delayed birth certificates, wrote that she was "very surprised and pleased to be named the 2002 honoree." She said, " It is great to he a member of such a dedicated, hardworking organization.. I especially value the wonderful friends I have found at JCGS." Gene wrote that "it was indeed an honor to receive the Daniel Washington Deitz Memorial Award. Let me use JTJ to express my appreciation to the Executive Committee of Jackson County Genealogical Society...also to Daniel's sisters Ila Rae and Bessie, for endowing this award. Daniel was my friend." 137 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2002 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m KJ y We are not sure if this old photograph will be in any wise viewable, but it's such a classic that we need to try. Below, also submitted by Betty, is a postcard photograph identified only as Mr. Lacy Butler, Fontana, NC. We begin a different family in this issue, that of the FuUbrights of North Carolina. JCGS member Danny F. Jones of Matthews, North Carolina shares this with us.] The original German spelling of Fullbright was VOLPRECHT (or VOLLPRECHT). You will find this spelling or a derivation of it in many old documents. The spelling was changed by JOHANN WTLHELM VOLPRECHT to John William Fullbright in 1762. There are many spellings of the name: Volprecht, Vollprecht, Volprite, Fullbright, Fulbright, Fulbrite etc. All relate to one family, that of John William Fullbright. There is some question as to the correct ancestors of John William Fullbright. The following ancestors of John William Fullbright (Volprecht) are taken from a book by Roy S. Dickson, Jr. titled THE DESCENDANTS OF JAMES A. DICKSON OF TENNESSEE AND TEXAS WITH ALLIED FAMILIES: COLEMAN, FULBRIGHT, HARKEY, NALL, TIPPEN. In chapter 48 titled "The Fulbright Family," Page 140, Jvir. Dickson states that his information comes from the book THE EDDLEMAN-FULBRIGHT FAMILIES By Riley Russell Eddleman of St. Louis, Missouri. Ed Stout, Family Historian of the Fulbright Family Association, questions much of the information given by Mr. Eddleman. Several researchers have tried without success to validate the information in the book. The following four generations are offered as information only. I have no confirmed support for them. Descendants of Hans Volprecht/Fullbright Generation No. 1 ^ 1. HANS1 VOLPRECHT was bom Abt. 1597 in Rassdorf, Hanover, Prussia, Germany, and died March 01, 1666/67. He married MARIA JUDITHA CALENIUS October 25, 1706 in Edelak, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. JOHN WTLHELM5 VOLPRECHT, b. February 06,1715/16, Sugarhasted, Schleswig- Holstein, Germany; d. 1808, Lincoln County, North Carolina, USA. The following information is much better supported by documentation than the previous information. However there are still some dates and people in question. The information is taken from family Bibles, BroderBund Family Archives, various wills from the state archives or in private hands, Amos Medford and his research, Betty C. Anderson, Senator J. W. Fulbright, Ed Stout, Fulbright Family Association Historian, Fulbright Family Association Records, personal contacts and letters. Where possible, dates and names have been crosschecked to more than one source. Descendants of John Wilhelm Volprecht Generation No. 1 1. JOHN WLLHELMS VOLPRECHT (HANS HIOB4, DANIEL NIKOLAUS3, SIMON2, HANS1) was bom February 06, 1715/16 in Sugarhasted, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and died 1808 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, USA. He married CHRISTIANNA SHUCK Abt. 1741 in Pennsylvania, daughter of JOHANNES SHUCK and ANNA (?). She was bom Abt. 1725 in Germany, and died Aft. 1805 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, USA. As a 17-year-old Johan Wilhelm Volprecht was apprenticed to a great uncle in Basel, Switzerland to learn the weaver's trade. From 1734 to 1740 he mastered his trade. That summer he took his slim funds and traveled by Rhine River boat to Rotterdam. Encountering the 26 taxing stations along the river, he arrived in Rotterdam practically broke. But determined to migrate to the New World, he indentured himself for 5 years and sailed on the Robert and Alice, Walter Goodman, Master. The ship docked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 3, 1740. John Wilhelm changed the spelling of his name to Fullbright in 1762. The family settled in Dutch Cove, Pennsylvania. They also lived in William Township, North Hampton, Pennsylvania. The foUowing information (records) is cited in the book GERMAN SPEAKING PEOPLE WEST OF THE CATAWBA RIVER IN NORTH CAROLINA 1750-1800 by Lorena Shell Eaker concerning the Fullbright Family- Congregation Church Records, William Township, North Hampton, Pennsylvania Johann George Vollbrecht, son of William and Christina born Feb. 28, 1746, baptized March 9, 1746.
